Me again...

So I was able to solve my FTP problem (I needed FTP server software...imagine that!). Any recomendations for e-mail server software? I want to run the software on my computer and all it has to do is be able to receive e-mail from my domain hosted on my computer.

Thanks.

I assume your running some *nix right?

Yantze 26th December 2000 19:11

No, I have apache running on my win98 box.

Ah, I see.... well now that makes it a bit more interesting. Ok, so um...... Anyone else got/know of some win98 server soft? Got me there Yantze.

How much space you got on your hard-drive? Cause I would tell ya to just run linux... but um that's not likely so, can't help ya now.

But your asking for a email server to retrieve mail from/for a domain server you run on your computer right? Something like that? I'll try looking for software for you that is within the bounds of/ or near that.

I found one! It's called InterChange by Infinite. It's great. I now have a functional HTTP, FTP, and mail server running entirely under win98. All I need to do now is find some win98 compatible mods for apache to let me run asp pages, then I'll be set. Scary...

Umm, let me get this straight. You're running a webserver on Windows 98?

Good Luck!

What's wrong with running a web server on Win98? As long as he doesn't get a shit load of traffic and he has a good net connection, it will be fine.

So, that makes it, basically, a private server.... I mean so many things could go wrong with a server that was ported to the Win9X platform. I mean don't you see that? The Win9X platform is not stable enough to run a server. Turn off the screensaver, power saving features, etc and you might be able to run your system long enough to make an efficient server. But come on, ask microsoft (Bill Gates even) and they'll tell you, that the windows98 operation system is NOT designed to run that type of software. Especially if he's going to use it on a regular basis. Like I run a gnutella proxy on my computer and, in win98, it will run no longer than an hour before the windows looses all its resources and performance begins to degrade. Maybe he should look for some other software designed for windows exclusively, along with a few other tools to tweak windows and control system/resources. But he mentioned he was running Apache for win98.... need I say more?

a-arse 27th December 2000 13:29

So what is the server for?

Yantze 27th December 2000 15:54

Basically I'm just running it so I can showcase some of my work to clients and so I can ftp directly to my computer from school. So, no, I don't expect a lot of traffic. I haven't had any problems yet even when running apache alongside Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator and Macromedia director simultaniously! It surprises me that it's worked so well so far because on Apache's site it says that support on the win9x platform is still experimental. But, ya, no problems here.

my specs...
Rogers @Home Cable modem
AMD 750 MHz
256 Mb PC-133 RAM
64 Mb ATI Rage-Fury Video card
...etc...

I think I should be ok for the small amount of traffic that I'm going to receive!!

Yantze 27th December 2000 16:43

So now that I have this all installed and running, do you know of any win32 compatible mod's for Apache that will allow me to run asp pages? I don't really understand Perl at all, and the only one I've found so far requires the mod_perl module...??
