Where Is Meta Data Stored
Where is my meta data stored? I screwed up and renamed a bunch of albums and I am looking for ways to fix my mistake.
Thanks |
depends what u mean. metadata is typically stored in each file. it is read by winamp, and winamp then creates a DB of it.

I ripped a CD that had no data. I mistakenly used "Control A" and the "Control E" to put in the album name. The control A selected all my albums! By the time I realized what I had done and hit cancel it had reached all my albums up to the letter "J!" When I go to the folder of the effected file everything seems normal e.g. the title of each song has not changed like it show in Winamp.
My first question is did my mistaken change happen in each folder or were the changes made to the internal Winamp file. If it is internal to Winamp can I clear all the files and meta data and reload all my albums. If the change has occurred to the ripped files do I need to re rip all those albums? Thanks for your help. |
there is no undo. winamp has only done what you told it to do.
the changes you made were to the tags of the files, not the actual filenames or folder names. winamp can not fix it for you. you can only fix it manually with winamp. (meaning, u edit each thing that is wrong) you can try to learn to use mp3tag, and then tell mp3tag to write tags based on folder/filenames, but that's probably the best that can be done and it will only be as good as the info that's present. see: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=345521 |
I am assuming that the mistake you made was actually applied to the files metadata, not just the winamp DB. once you DL mp3tag and scan in the files, you will see for sure whats in them.

Thank you MrSinatra. As usual your advice is spot on!
