Well...?

fish 15th January 2001 00:08

it depends. photoshop is for photos and paint shop is for painting :)

Ice 15th January 2001 00:10

photoshop all the way. photoshop is the best for editing images, and can also paint. photoshop is sectsay.

Matt 15th January 2001 00:13

No competiton, it's Paint Shop (Pro).

Photoshop is unusable and has the worse interface I've ever seen.

randman 15th January 2001 00:13

If you are going for quality and value, Paint Shop Pro is the best for its price. (I am assuming you are buying it). ;)

Yantze 15th January 2001 00:30

PhotoShop is the industry standard for pretty much every graphic-related industry. I haven't used Paint Shop Pro since version 4 and it was really bad back then. PhotoShop 6 is probably the most powerful graphics program available right now. It's jpg compression algorhythm is the best in the business (beating even FireWorks) and it can now use Vector Tools (not as good as Illustrator, but pretty dam close).

As for the interface, Adobe's interface has been copied by many companies (such as MacroMedia who are being sued by Adobe now for patent infringement).

My suggestion is to get/learn PhotoShop. It is WAY more powerful than the other products on the market now.

randman 15th January 2001 00:52

PhotoShop is clearly the better program. Whether it is worth $609.00 US dollars (suggested retail), depends on what you're going to do with it. If you are just going to make Winamp skins and retouch photos, Paint Shop Pro more than does the job for me. And at a tenth of the price.

My 2 cents

(And Yantze, Paint Shop Pro has evolved a lot since version 4). :)

Interesting...

Keep the "cents" coming. :D

s1138 15th January 2001 02:46

well, since i havent installed Paint Shop Pro yet, i cant say. but photoshop is good for me

Jayn 15th January 2001 02:57

I use Paint Shop Pro 7 (much better than version 6). I have Photoshop, but I've never done much with it yet. Yantze is right, Photoshop is the industry standard, but for just starting out Paint Shop Pro is much easier to use. :)

Flynnz 15th January 2001 03:04

Might be good to note that I have a 200 mhz pentium with 64 megs of ram....

:D

Photoshop vs Paint Shop Pro

I was always a keen fan of Paint Shop Pro, ever since my old 486 days! It's fine for normal graphic type stuff, but as you get better with graphics, you'll need more advanced software. Photoshop is a high end users tool, and i bet even the people who say how much they love it, haven't even got past using the twirl effect yet!!! So yeah, you use what you need. I still have both Photoshop 5.5 and PSP6 on my Athlon800.

By the way, I have Photoshop 4 on an old P75 with 32MB RAM!!! It runs fine!

Anacific 15th January 2001 04:41

I like Photoshop...even though it takes a while to load on my comp...

magnezium 15th January 2001 09:28

well i've tried all three... and i'll tell u corel photopaint 9 is the winner...=] but then again, it's a matter of opinion and what u use the program for...=]

Kezman 15th January 2001 13:19

nah Paint Shop Pro is alright with me...version 7 rulez..:D
much better than Photoshop atleast that's my opinion..:)

John M 15th January 2001 18:01

paint+picture it = all i need.

PhrostByte 15th January 2001 18:15

Paint Shop Pro 7.0 for editing, creating, scanning documents, and some other stuff...

Also, I use Eye Candy 4000 and Xenofex for effects, and Ulead 3D Cool for text.

Yantze 15th January 2001 18:23

PhotoShop 5.5 and 6 both require like 94Mb to run with ImageReady and I think 64Mb to run by itself, so I think you'd probably be better off with Paint Shop Pro.

Like everything, it is a matter of opinion. If you have a fast connection, why not download the trials for both and then pick the one YOU like best?

D-cibeL 15th January 2001 22:17

Personally I like Corel PhotoPaint. It comes with Corel Draw, which is by far the best software package for it's price. Paint+vectors for a price which is less than Photoshop. Photoshop + Illustrator = much much more. PhotoPaint has basically the same features as Photoshop, but with a much nicer interface.

As far as Paint Shop Pro goes, I think it's more of a hobbiest's program than a professional program. That's just my opinion though.

Did that already.. just wanted to hear what YOU guys thought. :)

bad_rip_off 15th January 2001 23:11

corel kicks photoshop's fat ass

boobless 15th January 2001 23:19

never used photoshop, don't like paint shop that much...love photoimpact 6 ulead.com tho. :)

Xerxes 16th January 2001 06:40

There is a reason Adobe leads the market - photoshop cannot be beat. It is the ultimate tool for graphics, and it has now added worlds of usability and function to the package with the addition of vector drawing in photoshop 6.

If you look in serious design magazines, you don't hear
much mention of anything else. Actually, you MIGHT do
yourself better if you want to stay on the free side and
download "the GIMP" for windows which has been hailed by
many as a near equal to photoshop...

I say either Photoshop or GIMP, and eliminate paintshop out of the equation.

magnezium 16th January 2001 08:34

hey guys! let's all use M$ Paint and M$ Photo Editor!!! and for those with win 3.1 and below, use Paintbrush!!!

ElChevelle 16th January 2001 10:43

If you suck at painting, do us all a favor and DO NOT use Photoshop!
There's nothing uglier than putting a shitty driver behind the wheel of a Lamborghini.

John M 16th January 2001 13:21

understood.

ElmoTheGreat 16th January 2001 13:30

Learning curve

Do more = Study more = Photoshop

What does this have to do with Winamp?

EvilTenster 16th January 2001 13:39

Hmm.. for those with semi-"alternative" operating sytem also installed you could use the Gimp, although figuring out how to use it is sometimes interesting...

Plus it's free... and it's name gets way more laughs than the other two..

Flynnz 16th January 2001 13:59

I already tried GIMP... the Windows port is horribly slow, and - unsurprisingly - was kinda hard for me to use. :(

(We'll see how it is once I get Linux installed.)

NoLimit37 16th January 2001 15:49

hmmm....

I got PSP 4 SE.. LOL I think I need to get a newer version of PSP.. Right now I can make little outerspace type pictures with letters that look really cool and pop out of the picture sorta.. I usually use the effects of a graphics programs in strange ways that not many people would think of.. MUHHAHAHAHAHA!!

I personally like Gimp, and think the Windows port runs reasonabaly fast, although it crashes alot when opening pics. I strongly suggest you try CorelDraw though. I assure you, you will not be dissapointed.

Check out features here:

(What's great is that Corel make software for Windows, Mac, AND *Linux*)
