I havent seen reference to this problem anywhere else so wonder if it is unique. After formating my machine i installed v2.72 and had all the skipping problems that seem so common. Sorted. but one thing i cant get a handle on. If im using a browser and hit the back or forward button or just about anything else, songs continue to play , but at a dramaticaly slowed down rate ( like half speed). only stopping and restarting resumes normal playback. I cant believe its hardware limitation. Souncard will playback up to 16 channel 96KHz 24 bit, PIII 500 128M. Could i Be missing A codec or something?

Try to increase the buffer length.

Sometimes some programs want to use 100% of the processor time, leaving winamp to rely on it's buffer. For me, this sometimes ends up in something that seems like a failed sync; songs play in half speed with short gaps of silence at a 10 or something Hz rate, until I pause the Mp3 and play it again.

With an increased buffer, the chance of reaching this point is minimized. I use 2 secs on an PII@350, which seems to be enough.

Thanks Krutar, But i Have tried all that , all buffers are set to the max inc. 5s for the main buffer and its still happening. But maybe i wasnt clear that im not loseing sync or suffering gaps or silences, the frequency displayed isnt changeing either - stayin at 44KHz. if its any help im usin an event Gina Sound card, latest drivers, wasnt a problem before formatting drive, oh yea and windows media player is doin the same thing......now where did i put my old reel to reel tape player? :(
