This is the weirdest thing ever! Winamp 2.66 was randomly causing my comp to freeze...this came out of the blue too. I used it a whole year without any problems, and so I just upgraded it to 2.72. Unfortunately, the same thing happens. My whole comp freezes and i have to manually shut my comp off, as the freeze renders everything useless otherwise. The really weird thing is that this always happens at the end of a song. And it varies how many songs i can play without it freezing. Once it was 10 songs, more, less...completely random. Today it played one song and freezed immediately after it was over. What is up with this?? Anyone have the same problem? Anyone have any possible solutions?? Thanks :\

Have you installed any 3rd party plugins?
Particularly : Input; Gen Purpose; DSP/FX
Do you have any active DSP/FX or Vis plugins?

If so, in Winamp Prefs, select "None" for DSP/FX & uncheck "Auto start vis on play" (Plugins section).

To disable General Purpose plugins, close Winamp & goto the Winamp\Plugins dir.
Remove any files called gen_*.dll, or rename them with the *.off extension.

Are you using WaveOut or DirectSound Output?
Does it crash regardless with either/both?

Other solutions are to :
1. Close Winamp & delete the winamp.ini file (Winamp dir).
This will restore all the default settings next time you open Winamp.
2. Look in Winamp Prefs & change some settings.
Particularly in the "Display" settings -> try unchecking "Use Winamp cursors", etc.
Also make sure your Plugin priority is set to Normal.
Process Priority Class should be set to Normal as well (Options section).
3. Backup any extra skins, plugins, bookmark list (winamp.bm) & saved presets (winamp.q2), etc, and uninstall (via Add/Rem Programs) & then reinstall.

If none of this helps, then please supply your full sys specs in your reply.
Also tell us what other programs you are running concurrently.
And, last but not least, have you checked your pc for any viruses recently?

ps.
Since my initial reply, I've now also seen this thread which explains that you experience the problem when playing MP3's and/or AudioCD's.
You also tell us that you're using Win98.
Why didn't you supply this info in this thread?
Splitting your bug report/tech support submittal over more than one thread certainly doesn't help us to help you!

Anyway, answer the questions/try the solutions above & we'll take things from there.
Please reply in this thread only.

I am having a similar problem with winamp. Starting with v2.72 i have been having trouble trying to use winamp to play audio cd's. it will play a few songs then lock up my computer, causing me to do a hard reboot. I am running win98se, 500 mhz, 320 MB Ram, 50x cd rom drive, if you need more info about my spec i will supply it. I tried installing a previous version that i still had the install program for and it worked without any problems, the problem only seems to happen with version 2.72 and 2.73. i thought that upgrading to v2.73 would help but it has the same problem. If this problem has already been addressed somewhere on this forum please let me know and i will go and see what it says to do. I posted here since it sounds somewhat like the problem i am having and was the first i seen going by subject.
