I dunno if this has been posted already, and quite frankly im 2 damn lazy 2 check, but theres a new rating system. :) Its alot like the system that deskmod.com has. Well, this is gonna lessen CO's power trip. :D

Id really appreciate it.

[b]YESSSS!!! YESSSSS!!! YESSSSS!!!!!! HALLLEELLLUJAH!!!! YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

chiquita chad 29th March 2001 01:41

one bad thing... [b]lots and lots of newbies will be in skin love askin us to give them a 5... plus a nerd with lots of time will give it 5 stars over and over

chiquita chad 29th March 2001 01:45

plus it really doesnt change much
no matter how many 5 stars ppl give it, iw will still remain in the middle of the reviewer given amt of stars
Ex.. Co gave you 3... everyone gives you 5... you'll get 4

Duk 29th March 2001 02:07

Sweet Mary Mother! The promised land is upon us! Glory glory glory!!! :D

BullGawD 29th March 2001 02:12

They've safeguarded against repeated reviews by one user. I just tried to review Dawg's twice - you don't get the option unless you just wanna creat new accounts all the time. If someone wants to do that - more power to them.

I don't know, since I have an account, but can peeps without winamp submission accounts review?

And no, it doesn't change the review rating, but at least we get a voice, and a chance to hear what others think about our skins. (Nice for those who can't seem to find the forums) ;)

Look on the bright side for once Keeta, come on - you're a major dude. :D

Xerxes 29th March 2001 11:12

Behold!, the promised land lays before you! ;)

Jayn 29th March 2001 18:05

I know a lot of you guys probably like this new rating system....but I think it bites. Because of people like this Caleb guy and a few others. Winamp is now just another skin site.

I just sent a note to Admin to see if there was any way we could get a 'rating panel' set up. A panel of actual skinners, who would rate each skin. Instead of having it totally public where John Doe Public can come by and give a rating of 0 and leave comments like "dfgdgdfdgd" like was done to Zeus.

What do you guys think of this?

BullGawD 29th March 2001 18:19

Sounds good to me, but who gets to join? Would it be voluntary - admission upon review? That'd be aright. :)

:D There are reasons for that:
  • I have a biiiig mouth
  • I attend college in Oklahoma and you guys are a helluva lot more interesting than most people here.
  • It's frikkin' cold outside.

Oh, and, having noticed that I didn't - I'd gladly volunteer my services as a bigmouth reviewer. :D

The Only Lynx 29th March 2001 18:23

maybe two rows of stars

yellow -> public rating
red -> proffesional panel rating

The Only Lynx 29th March 2001 18:25

i think its cool you can actually put comments there... :D

soundscape003 29th March 2001 18:47

brill idea lets shit on the CO's but lets not crush them

the 2 rows is a brill but hay why not have 3 rows so the CO or what eva can have there say (pist pist i think some of the CO are very dumb)because there are some skins they have gaven 5 stars that i would piss on and then there are skins that i love and would give 5 stars but they piss on them and give them like 2 or 3 stars.

Not wishing to sound smug, but I've said all along this kind of nonsense would arise from public reviewing, anyone else noticed how many 5 star skins have dropped from the list over the last day?, oddly enuff I don't see the numbers going up at all.

It's human nature to rip into people , no matter how good the skin is, someone will always without fail post dumb comments like that and mark skins down, all it took was one stupid rating like that and the most downloaded skin on winamp has slipped into 3 star obscurity.

The ratings panel is a winner all the way Jayn, you would have my support 100% on this, it's the only logical way to do things, get people who know what they are talking about to review skins, after all isn't that the case with most things in life?, after all you wouldnt watch say the motor racing on tv and expect comentary by a soccer expert, wouldnt make a great deal of sense.

Anyhow, as I say I'm with you 100% on this, just wish it had been suggested before this monster of a rating system was put in place. I for one will be watching very closely what happens with my stuff.

Back to the day job :)

Duk 29th March 2001 18:59

I'd like to volunteer for the panel ... I'm sure there are others here as well.

I like the panel review system idea the best ... always have. If I get on a panel tho, I'd like the ability to ammend my review when skins are updated as well.

If ya have an admin friend or two, Jayn, please pass this along. Gracias. :)

And MJ, we've been lobbying for this panel thang at least since I posted my Frankly Disgusted thread. They let the forums run on Mods, why not let the Review System run on a Panel? Come on ... must be something we can do 'bout this, right. It's still new & fresh and open to debate. Gotta be.

ampburner 29th March 2001 19:04

I agree with Jayn. 100%. the current rating system sucks, but by forming a review panel, it could easily be turned into a great one! with people like caheb, the star-rating loses it's entire meaning.

For example the Zeus incident...or, which concerns me personally, Snipeamp SE for example. before the new rating system it had 5 stars. Caleb came along: Bang!....

It went from five to 2.5 stars. I know it looks very extreme because the skin only has been rated a few times, so each vote has a (relatively) HUGE impact. Sure, if it had been rated a thousand times, then one person's vote would not make SUCH an impact. But still, I don't like the idea of the fact that a rating is influenced by such pathetic loonies with too much free time :D

I noticed the fact that, when you try to vote on a skin, there's a line (above the type-your-review-here-box) that says: ""

This means that the system is already capable of recognising the user. which means that it could be relatively easily modified to only give certain users permission to vote.

My suggestion: Ask admin to set up a system which only allows people to vote if they meet the following conditions:
  • *User has at least published 5 skins
*The user's average skin rating is 3 or higher

I am aware that many of you would be opposed to the second condition. But I think it's necesary to prevent people from submitting 10 skinner.exe skins just to be able to post reviews...

On another note...would you be so kind to boost my Snipeamp SE rating a little ???? :D:D:D;)

The Only Lynx 29th March 2001 19:08

i volunteer too :D

hehe.. but i wont rate my own skins.. coz dont think its all fair.. i rated my skin in the public thingy.. hehe.. gave it 4.. coz am only 99% pleased about the woodshop.. am too strict to myself i think :s

"100" being the key word :D:D;)

ampburner 29th March 2001 19:15

To all the people that are volunteering, I would like to say: think about it, before saying yo volunteer. winamp.com gets LOADS of submissions, and rating them would be a near-full-time job...so if you're serious about volunteering, it's gonna cost you a LOT of time.

Mr Jones 29th March 2001 19:19

Oh and by the way, before anyone says "is he talking like this about the new reviews because he's had a skin downgraded?", acctually no, quite the opposite I've had a skin uprated, but I still think this review system sucks big time.

Back to the day job :)

flatmatt 29th March 2001 20:01

If there's a panel, I should be on it (in my humble opinion).

Duk 29th March 2001 20:21

A "Skin Lovers" panel. :D

Jayn 29th March 2001 20:42

Good point Amp....but if we had a set panel of reviewers...say 9...and rotated reviewers on a weekly basis...3 on, 6 off...next week 3 new on, and so forth, that would relieve some of the time burden I think. We could always double up during high-submission times too, like spring break or Christmas break.

BullGawD 29th March 2001 21:06

what about this idea:

Instead of a panel of raters, a panel of submission reviewers. To be able to rate skins, you must submit a form, with links to skins to your credit, or other positive credentials. Once you're greenlighted, you can rate however you like. This panel could also review abuses and revoke your voting rights.

I don't know - depends on whether you think it'd be less or more work. Jayn, you still here? Whatcha think :)

Jayn 29th March 2001 21:21

I'm here...sorry...I was adding a permanent link to the Skin Rips thread up in the Announcements. I've got the day off...you guys are stuck with me all day today ;)

That's a very good idea BullGawd...there are a lot of fine skinners out there, and that would give them an opportunity to get in on reviewing as well. :D

ampburner 29th March 2001 22:20

Well, as long as we exclude people that can't be trusted the freedom of speech
( :D ;) hehehe)

soundscape003 29th March 2001 23:28

don't get to gready (no ofence just what im seeing in here)

u want it all don't you your not even giving the newbie's a chance.
sure you want people who have done skins to rate skins (or you just all wan't the power for you and you)
well fuck i been d/l'ing skins for years and i might of only just signed up a week or so ago and i haven't fininshed my first skin yet (mmm been haveing some complications) really all im saying is this is all good for you guys but i think that you should give newbies a chance and if a newbie does ask to sign up just ask them the name of some threads they have done and look at them i personaly don't want to be on this winskin rateing comity but i have a lot of time on me i have recently been kicked out of school so im proposing that if a newbie wants to sign up tell me there name and the names of a tread or threads they have done and i will personaly go and cheak them out.

well thats about all i got on this subject.

BullGawD 29th March 2001 23:44

we're not trying to exclude newbies. We are trying to put together a way to guage the reliability and good judgement of a person. Seniority in the forums indicates that a person will be around for a while, (since they've been here so long already) and a skin to your name indicates that you know what kind of work and trouble it is to create, and will therefore be considerate of that in rating the work of others. As it is, I'd probably be excluded from any decision making team as well, since I've only been around since the beginning of last month, and I only have 1 official skin to my name. It's just the way the cookie crumbles. :)

[idea plug] One of the advantages of my idea is that, if you may be able to convince a panel w/out having been in-forum for long, or having a great many skins to your credit. [/idea plug] :D

Princess Dagger 29th March 2001 23:53

Plus, Soundscape - Now that you're making a skin yourself, don't you have so much more respect for all these guys who crank out fabulous skins all the time? *glancing around at the Skin Love Regulars*

Newbies aren't newbies for long :D If you spend some time on your stuff (and don't get CO as a reviewer on a day when his panties are in a bunch), it won't be very difficult to get three stars, if Amp's suggestion is taken into consideration.

Namelessv1 30th March 2001 01:42

Soundscape, dont worry, man. Ull get ur chance to get some of the power.

soundscape003 30th March 2001 01:58

5 stars

im not posting my first skin till its of 5 star quality (like that brill ff9 skin of yours) and i might be geting photoshop if i do that will boost my skin (i think lets hope so)

p.s princes if you have a brill ff7 pic you can give to humble me it would be much praised.
i wanna make a ff7 skin of your standed.

Princess Dagger 30th March 2001 02:45

Well, I don't want to show all my cards, since I'll probably be doing more FF skins :p, but if you go here you might find some pics you like.

[blush]Thanks for such a compliment[/blush] but my skin was only a three star. Check out some of the other Skin Love classics, my personal favorites being: Liquid Paradise, Barnyard Boogie, The Woodshop (despite what some people think!! :p), and SkinMaster and my non skin love favorites, Kid, Waoria (my BFs favorite), and Super Mario Bros.

... just to name a few of the sea of better skins ;)
