Re: don't get to gready (no ofence just what im seeing in here)

Soundscape, I would like you to read this carefully, so you can gain better understanding of my opinion, before making up your mind. My intention is NOT to exlcude newbies, It is to exclude immature people like 'Caheb'. These people are intentionally dissing people and pulling down their ratings without any arguments. The way I see it: The Primary function of a rating sytem is: that the average winamp user, who barely knows what napster is and just wants his winamp to look fancy can find the skin they want. People should be able to easily find the quality skins amongst the shitload of crappy skins that are out there. This can only be realized when we have a reliable rating system, a system in which the rating is a reflection of the skin's quality. Because of people like Caheb, skin ratings are not reliable. For this reason I believe it is neccesary to only allow a small (=controlable) group of people to rate skins. experienced people who have seen many skins, and know how difficult and time consuming making a skin can be. I think that the only way to be (fairly) sure of how reliable and experienced people are is to take a look at their history. I think you could safely say that ppl with over five skins published, an average rating of 3 stars and 200+ posts on the message board are people that are serious about skinning. You seem like a nice person that can be trusted with the responsability of rating skins. But we have no background information to ensure that you are reliable. Don't take this personal. I'm not saying that you can't be trusted. I'm merely saying that I can not be sure that you can be trusted, for the simple reason that I don't know you very well. Trust has to be earned. I believe that a system like the one I suggested is the best way to ensure that the people that will be rating the skins are trustworthy. Saying that 'my system' (which isn't a system, just a suggestion) is a way for us 'regulars' to keep the power to ourselves would be like saying that for example every american citizen should be able to become president even if they don't have any political experience whatsoever. Sure, every adult citizen should have the right to run for presidency, be to actually become president you have to have certain skills, and political support (=trust (which has to be earned)) from a lot of people. If you really want to be a skinner, just 'do your thing' and you won't be a newbie for long. Sure it takes time, but hey, doesn't everything? :) OK I admit that the comparison between presidency and rating skins isn't entirely ( :D ) valid. Being on the rating panel isn't that big a deal. But my comparison IS a very good example of what would happen if you'd put people equally stupid to George Bush in charge of the rating system  think of the mess that would make! LOL. Note 1: IMO We need a restricted rating-panel because the current system is based on the assumption that the average person can be trusted with a small degree of responsability, and that assumption is naive .The question whether or not the system is 'fair' to newbies, is insignificant because the ONLY thing that counts is that the system should be reliable. Note 2: Again, please don't take this personal. I think that you're an exception to the average newbie. (phew  my fingers hurt ;) ) |

Oh, and my view on the skin rating panel is - its an okay idea, but in essence we'd just be doing the AOL rater's jobs - 'cept for free. Not only that, defeats the purpose of public review. I know you're not especially disagreeing with me amp', I'm just trying to reiterate.
If you just clicked on this page, 'afore you slam me for just criticizing - see my idea back on page 1. |

I'm really thinking in time the current new public review will be kinda nice. What I would like to see now is the elimination of the weighted winamp staffer's review. Of course maybe this could come after the new system stabilizes itself, yes? Just throw all new skins out there with a generic 3 star ... and get rid of the "featured" skins. That's just too elitist.

Good and Bad
I think it's cool that we can now rate and comment on skins. Personally I get kinda tired of the "slick" skins. Yes they are all very good and look cool, but I like the unique skins that have cool features. (Example: Mario Bros, Woodshop, SketchAmp) Even though they might not have been as hard to do they still deverve better ratings (i think). On the flip side it does give the power to unfairly over/under rate skins. I think that the Intial rating (by Nullsoft) should be posted along with the avgerage including user input. Also I like the panel idea but I doubt it is plauable. Nullsoft would have to sift through hundreds or even thousands of apps and pick (what 10? 20?) people to be on the panel... unlikely, I'd rather them work on WA3 :)
My two cents, |

Yes, at the very least there should be moderation of the reviews. And once a skin gets published and a public review has begun, any inane winamp staffer "reviews" should be eliminated.

i want in!!!
keep a spot resrved for me on this board i didn't want to be on it befor but i think i do now i see that most people who have talked about it know eachother and i think that a newbie who has no idea who the hell you all are would be good. Some ppl say im a youngen because im tearning 15 on april the 18th wich i think is good because im sure there is a lot of 15 year old's that use winamp alot and my freinds range from 14 to 19 so i think this gives me a lot of knowledge of what difernt ages like.I have been working on a skin for the last about hhmmm... i'd say 3-4 weeks and only haveing photo deluxe 2.0 i know just how hard it can be to make a skin (im geting photo shoop 6 for my birthday).on friday end of tearm holidays start wich is 2 weeks and then 3 weeks into next tearm i go back to school
so i have all the time in the world for the next 5 weeks that i can use to help you get this boared up and running. sorry if you didn't like what i said earlyer about you big guys wanting it all, offence wasn't meant i was just puting out my point ofr view. |
I think if winamp ain't up for panel reviews yet (as I am sure they are not), at least give those review "forums" a moderator. That'll help eliminate a little of the craziness ... they are in dire need of one or two or three imho.

I think Jayn should recruit the skin rating panel.

Hmmm ... demonic possession perhaps?
Excellent grasp of the language ya got there, ss. |
:D Maybe 'Sybil' has run out of medication :D
Where's MJ's demonic possession smiley when ya' need it? :p I think Amp has made some valid points, also seems that soundscape has just made a good case why newbies should maybe get a bit more time and experience in before being considered for any type of Skin Review Board position, in my opinion. :) |

As far as your disparaging remarks towards our dependence on Jayn, she happens to be our best working link to getting Nullsoft's attention. I can't imagine how she does it, and I can only commend her for her efforts. Beyond that, they personally offend me - to my knowledge, she's been nothing but nice to you. Finally, I defy you to name a single group that you can simply walk into and be held in the same high esteem that senior and more knowledgeable members are - and that's when you make a good impression. Forums are a good place to vent, but since you've shown up, I think I'd be fair in saying that 80% of your posts have been in the form of verbal abuse directed towards those of us that have been here longer than you, and who have taken the time to answer your questions with patience and good humor. Not the way to make friends grasshopper. Im not trying to get rid of you, but please, just chill out and show us the same respect we have shown you. |

Oh and everything else you wrote up there BullG, couldn't agree more, us permanent inmates of these forums are always keen to welcome in new inmates, errrrr I mean new members, politeness, respect and some manners never cost anyone anything and will get you far in here, take an attitude like Soundscape and it will get you nothing but grief from others in here, after all we come here to share idea's, a joke now and then, creative reason and generaly to have some fun. If I wanna here someone shouting and screaming the odds to me I'll just pop into any teen chat room on the net and say summat like "eminem sucks dick" and stand back for the barrage of abuse it would bring me. My advice to you Soundscape is this, engage brain before using keyboard. Back to the day job:) Back to the day job :) |
