The support posts are full of people who have problem x, y or z. The common reply seems to be check Winamp.ini and turn off all your plugins. How about including a Safe Mode switch that reverts to a set of known good options, and doesn't load non-critical plugins and visualization add ons. It could also (perhaps) disable Winamp agent, and reset your file associatations to default.
Just a thought, anyway. Regards, Dave. |
better idea: add reset button which resets all settings to default values.

Hehehe... a big red emergency button.. cool thing! :D

Thing is, what is safe for one person, isn;t safe for another.
|
Yes, well it's not so much what's safe for an individual it's what's safe for Winamp. So, the idea of have a "safe mode", which could be a shortcut on the Start Menu, is that it doesn't change any of the users settings permanently, it merely disables "unsafe" stuff for that session. This enables easier debugging/troubleshooting.
Of course, a big red emergency panic button sounds like a good idea, but I think an important element is the plugins (which this solution might not solve). Thoughts? |
My only thought about a button is that if the interface won't load up at all, how are you going to get to the button?
|
Yes, good point. That's why I initially thought about a command line switch (ie. WINAMP /SAFE). The setup program could install a shortcut to this on the Start Menu (ie. Winamp Safe Mode) in addition to the regular shortcut.
|
That could be quite handy sometimes. And it should be easy to include. Just make it so that it takes a switch and deletes the config file. I could sure use that feature.
|
I am starting to like this idea - safe mode which prevents any third-party plug-ins from being loaded and disables vis at all - this could finally shut up all those newbies posting their bs on the bugs forum. I'll mention it on irc.
|
Yeah, that was the idea - thanks for the positive feedback.
By the way, what's the IRC? |
