I have been running Windows XP and Office XP for a little while now and this voice control feature is pretty slick!! granted it takes a little training until it is accurate but once it is you can control a lot of the functions of word, explorer, etc. by talking to them. How sweet would it be if they put support for this into WA3?? the only problem would be if your music started controlling winamp heh... what does everyone else think?

Lepre41 11th April 2001 19:22

hmmm... there must be some way to have the noise cancelling so the voice control would purposely ignore whatever came out of the speakers... if done voice control would be really nice provided it worked accurately.
Great idea, tho I think it should be a plugin and not part of the actual system.

kltye 12th April 2001 15:07

Actually, there is a piece of voice-recognition software that can work macros; i.e. a user can record a sequence of actions on his keyboard and/or his mouse, and have the software play it back (much like MS Word's macro feature).
As for having the software and/or a plugin cancelling the audio coming out of the speakers, I don't think it'll be a problem. Usually, mics aren't placed very near speakers (doing so would reduce the rate of recognition), so I don't see how it can be a problem.

there've been a few posts 'bout this before:

I still think it's the lamest idea ever! When will people learn that voice recognition blows (for the moment that is...) It just will not work when you're playing music. You'll need some kick-ass filter, which by the way, would need to filter out you're pounding techno beats real-time, therefore sucking away all your resources.

well that's enough ranting for today. I'm satisfied :D

Curi0us_George 12th April 2001 16:35

Speech recognition does not "blow." Speech recognition is not as fast as typing for most people, true, but that doesn't mean that it isn't useful. Sppech recognition isn't intended to replace typing for everyone. I can type a lot faster than my speech recognition software can recognize my voice, but that doesn't mean that I don't want to keep my software. I use it when either I'm lazy, or my hands are getting tired. A lot of people with limited use of one or both hands get a great benefit from this technology. One of my professors has a wife who has severe nerve damage in her hands. She uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking and it recognizes her speech at over seventy words per minute now. I'd say that's pretty useful.

As for simple macro use, speech recognition is great. Saying "macro one" and having software go through a series of steps is highly useful.

As for implementing speech recognition into a program Winamp, it would be difficult, but as long as the microphone had suitable distance from the speakers, it could work.

Speech recognition technology will not improve unless people show a desire. Saying that it sucks isn't really a great type of encouragement. If you have used some of the software before, why don't you make some suggestions to the developers on how to improve it, instead of just criticizing?

ALREADY DONE!!!!!

Read Here

Download Here

I downloaded and tried and couldn't get the Speech Recognition to work, but the controller app does work. I'm not sure if it's just my setup or what.

Good luck, and let me know what you did to make it work.

theboyjenkins 9th October 2002 23:44

OMG!, this is the best little app i've ever seen, works great for me sitting at my desk with the music turned up, this is awesome

to make it work i just followed the instructions (downloaded the bit from microsoft, etc)

What now???

I too followed the included instructions (readme.txt)

I downloaded the M$ stuff and trained Win XP for my profile. I launch the program, which also launches Merlin, but not Winamp. I launch winamp manually but I cannot get it to respond to my voice commands. BTW I edited the .XML file also.

BoyJenkins

What's your setup?

Are you using WA3 or 2.x?

TIA

this is meant to only work with 2.x although it'll probably work with 3 + plugin manager (didn't have time to try it), this is what i did:

i downloaded and installed

text-to-speech engine - British English
SAPI 4.0 runtime support
Speech recognition engines
Speech control panel

from http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/downloads.htm

went into the speech control panel -> 'other' tab -> clicked on sapi control panel. clicked on english speech recognition then 'training' and trained it a bit.

Then put the 2 speech recog files in the directory you want to play mp3's from, if you want to control the loading of playlists instead of mp3 change the file extension setting in the speechsettings.xml

load up speechrecog.exe, merlin should appear, then press scroll lock to get his attention ( you have to do this each time you want to talk) and either say the name of the mp3 / playlist you want to load or say "winamp play" / "winamp stop" / etc to control winamp, then sit back and be amazed at modern technology.

btw, it will launch winamp automatically you don't need to launch it yourself

WMP

SOme of you say that voice with an audio player wont work, WMP has it and its pretty cool, i can crank the music and it still understands me. I don't use it when Im on the computer in a chair that is just stupid, but when im say on other side of room doing homework or something and want to switch songs or turn down volume, it comes really in handy.

Darkain 13th October 2002 19:50

has ANYONE ever used a microsoft gamevoice? d00d, i was using one a year ago, and it came with support for winamp2. the thing worked awesom for speech2play for winamp. im still thinking of picking one up for myself sometime just cause i liked the lil thing soo much.

Adil 16th October 2002 10:38

When I had windows 98, my soundcard drivers weren't allowing full duplex mode, so I was using Talk2Desktop in combination with power pro and winamp2...

It allowed me to do the following:

ask winamp to load the album I want, go to the track number I want, and then play the file.

When the playback started, the voice controls were automatically off until the song was over, then I could give another order.

and since talk2desktop actually speaks, it was telling me what album was loaded and what song is selected.

It was really very effective, I could control trhe music from anywhere in the room using a normal discussion with my computer as this one:

- Adil: Winamp?
- Computer: *bip bip*
- Adil: Load Utada hikaru - first love
- Computer: Utada HIkaru - First love loaded.
- Adil: Track number six please
- Computer: Track number six loaded.
- Adil: Play track!
- Computer: playing *music starts

now with windows xp I dunno how to disable the full duplex feature of my sound card...

D&B 17th October 2002 02:45

I dont see it in WMP...

I downloaded all the files, trained my voice, and it works horribley. I was using it in microsoft office, MY GOD IT WAS BAD.

I just wasted like half an hour damn it.

I would really love for it to work. I wish I could control winamp from anywhere in my room with just my voice...but it is not to be, I guess....

QHOBBES 17th October 2002 04:37

lousy job, ill have to try this thing out over the weekend.

You need "Microsoft Plus! for windows XP".

mc^^^^ 17th October 2002 10:41

by the time i say, "winamp3, load artist Aphrodite, song 10, play, volume max", "no not f***ing that ghey artist, APHRODITE! DAMMIT!", ARG!, "winamp3!!!!!, load artist Aphrodite!!!!, song 10, play, volume MAX!!!", then for it to listen to the music coming from my speakers and pause after 2 seconds just isnt worth it!

... imo :)

RandomCarpet 17th October 2002 14:01

wow my ambitions on doing a speech recognition wac for wa3 are blown away, it's useless now, someone already done it :)
