I have followed the instructions given to others on how to convert MIDI to WAV (OPTIONS -> PREFERENCES -> PLUGINS -> OUTPUT and select the Nullsoft Diskwriter plugin. Configuration screen-specify a directory. Load the midi files into the playlist and hit play). MIDI songs play as normal but do not get converted to WAV. What is going on? Please help. Thanks.

Thats strange - you are doing everything right. If you can hear the mp3s being played then you haven't selected the Diskwriter plugin properly - it's still using the Waveout plugin. Check in your winamp folder that the winamp.ini file is not read-only. This file saves all Winamp settings.

BTW - if anyone out there acn tell me if the winamp.ini file saves immediate changes, or only saves the changes when winamp is shut down, could they let me know??

ethan: it's mid to wav here, not mp3 to wav.

To be more precise ('cos I know PP's a very busy guy :))
Winamp Prefs -> Input -> MIDI plugin -> config -> output tab
Check : "write wav files to" & set the output dir

Any problems, do as PP says & read the internal Help manual.
Or refer to option 2 below.

btw,
You'll need to select WaveOut -or- DirectSound as the Output plugin.
DiskWriter is used for converting most other formats to WAV
. . . mainly MP3, but not usually MID . . . however, there's ways round this too!
(see options 1 & 3 below)

From the internal help manual:

Q: How do I convert MIDI to WAV ?
A: There are three ways:
(1) select Microsoft Synthesizer device, enable 'play through Winamp's ouptut system' and use some disk writer output plug-in (Nullsoft Disk Writer or my ACM WAV writer)
or
(2) enable sampling, enable 'use internal WAV writer' option and choose output directory for WAV files.
or
(3) enable sampling, enable 'send sampled data to output' and use the Disk Writer output plug-in
I recommend setting mixing/sampling frequency to 44100 Hz while writing WAV.
If you use sampling, output files contain exactly what you heard while writing; it's a good idea to disable all effects like reverb or chorus in your sound hardware in this case.
