I still have that friggin real jukebox in my system...I HATE THAT THING...you know why? Cuz i need it to rip CDs.
Winamp is the greatest MP3 software ever, if it had an integrated CD ripper, then real jukebox could kiss my ass. I hope Winamp3 has this. No 3rd party crap either...talking about a button sitting in the Winamp playlist window that says "rip these tracks". |

CD Ripper / MP3 sharing
I really like my WinAmp, but it lacks the ability to rip & burn CDs!!!
It would also be nice if WinAmp included a way to share MP3s between WinAmp user's play lists. "WinNap" you might call it. As much as I love my WinAmp, The folks a NullSoft need to catch up with their competitors! I have faith that they CAN produce a superior product. The question is (WHEN) WILL they get it done? Forget Napster, they're getting too much heat. My Recomendations: STREAMBOX RIPPER. (you can get a crack for Streambox at the Astalavista site, to get around the 10 use limit on the free trial version!) AUDIO GNOME. It allows you to not only choose a specific server (like the NAPIGATOR utility for Napster), but allows you to download from multiple servers at once! Music City is OK. The way it automaticaly searches for another source to complete the downloads is great. MusicMatch is OK, but lacks the easy "stereo like" interface of WinAmp, and the Play list does weird things to your entries. [Edited by Behind Blue Eyes on 05-23-2001 at 02:47 AM] |
Yep, I'd LOVE to see a CD ripper in Winamp, too.
As long as that isn't available, use MusicMatch Jukebox - IF you manage to get the old version 5 anywhere (if not, use CDex or FreeRIP MP3). The 6 version incorporates a faulty encoder which makes MP3s sound really crap. CDex ist available from http://www.cdex.n3.net. FreeRIP is available from http://www.mgshareware.com. If you want an easy to use program an don't know too much about CD ripping and MP3 encoding, you should use FreeRIP, it's marvellous for beginners. CU Dominic |
Yeh, and make sure that it can encode the tracks at acceptable bitrates. I hate trying to use encoders that only allow for 56 and below. WinAmp is a quality product and it should incorporate features to relect this.

If you knew anthing about winamp then you would know that in WA 2.75 you can use the disk writer output plugin when you play an audio CD. That rips the CD audio into wave (.wav) so you can use an Mp3 encoder to do the rest. Or you cand even use a Wave_out plugin to do that also. I have the same thoughts about integrating the ripper/burner into winamp; that would be very nice.

Arrogant sod! I know way enough about Winamp, and I also happen to know that - in theory - the Disk Writer Plugin - should work with an audio CD. When I tried it, it didn't work.
But doing that and then encoding the wave files manually is a pest, that's not what I call comfortable CD ripping... not to mention the fact that you would have to add the ID3 tags afterwards. BTW: The Wave_out plugin is NOT suitable for writing WAV or MP3 files! It's only used for music playback. So don't you tell me I don't know anything about Winamp if you're no better yourself! Not just a CD-Ripper! I hope there is a device that allows us to copy to CD as well in Winamp 3!

RJB+ was the only good one I could find
RJB+ was the only good one I could find...it can encode MP3 at up to 320kbps (not like I need it that high..LOL) but the software is just a bunch of bullshit, advertising everywhere, even in the plus version...you know what I mean?
I'll try CDex, since I'm no newbie. But, for now, IS there a good CD ripping plugin for Winamp? What I'd ALSO like to see...a built in CD BURNER! YEAH then it would whip Roxio's ass too! Imagine, ripping music from your CDs, combining them with mp3s, burning them to CDs...all in one program!!! |

The MP3 ripper really isn't a problem, but it's not that easy just to code a real CD burning program... CU Dominic |
CD-Ripping -
As someone else once put it: 'Can you say bloatware?' And as for the suggestion of CD-Burning... We could also do with integrated DVD support I guess, and also features that include ripping DVDs and automatically copying them to DivX or VCD, and sharing them across a new Winamp peer-to-peer system. I think things like this are fine in their place, but I don't want a mammoth winamp that does everything - I just want a small audio player that copes with a few formats and doesn't use up system resources like there's no tomorrow. |
I think you're absolutely right in saying you don't want Winamp overloaded - same here. But just a CD ripper wouldn't do any harm - half of it is included in Winamp anyway - the Disk Writer plugin. And including, say, the LAME MP3 encoder DLL is dead easy, and FREE! Team Nullsoft shouldn't have a problem with that (it's not a question of file size, either, the file you'd have to download would hardly increase in size)...
Imagine this: Many people (I know several of them) don't even know how to convert an audio CD to MP3 (they download a complete album instead), but all of them use Winamp to play back their MP3s. If Winamp had a CD ripper that is not hidden away to well, that would also be the solution for all the beginners! CU Dominic |
for ripping with winamp you need the CDReader plug-in, as described here: http://www.public.asu.edu/~abarber2/vis/rip/
|
Hey, that isn't even too bad, but over-complicated...
CU Dominic |
For ripping:
AudioGrabber or CDEX with the Lame encoder. For downloading: WinMX which uses various napster clone servers, and LimeWire which uses gnutella servers. Simple enough? :) |
the best cd ripper
I find the best cd ripper is Easy CD-DA with the Lame engine, I've had no problems with it.
maybe someone should write a Lame plugin for winamp. I may do it after my exams are over. Wish me luck :p I should say easy to use as http://www.public.asu.edu/~abarber2/vis/rip/ has a Lame plugin covered already. Sorry |
