OK now I grew up in a family with smokers, mind you I would never; I think its nasty, but still- I have sympathy towards older folks who got hooked on it while people thought it was "Healthful"...

But this settlement of 3 Billion dollars ... is way way way over the top- especcially after the giant lawsuit of 145 Billion dollars Phillip Morris shelled out earlier for to pay all damages.

Very wrong...

What is it with all these HUGE settlements for STUPID things?!
Hyper-litigious freaks :)

a-arse 7th June 2001 16:14

Rather than ban smoking, bankrupt the companys the supply the cigarettes?

I agree, but I don't think people should be rewarded for their stupidity/ignorance/apathy

More Andrew Dice Clay:

"I've been smoking for 15 years and my lung feels great!"

Kinda reminds me of the bitch that sued McDonalds after spilling her coffee on herself, for like $5000000 and actually won...

Lucid DM 7th June 2001 21:15

Yea. I mean. Do you know the details of that case? She was like, DRIVING and had the cup BALANCED on her LAP.
It's stuff like this that means companies have to put stupid warnings on packages. If you have a warning like "Careful, HOT" then people can't sue you if they get burnt.
eg. There's a camcorder that says "Do not machine wash". I'm sure there's a database of stuff like this out there...

edit>
On a microscope:
Objects are smaller and less alarming than they appear.
On children's alphabet blocks:
Letters may be used to construct words, phrases and
sentences that may be deemed offensive.
On a wet suit:
Capacity, 1.
In some countries, on the bottom of Coke bottles
Open Other End.

More? You want more? Just tell me :D

u know... the legal system is so stupid that anyone can sue for anything, we're gonna have signs every which way wherever we look as companies try to cover their asses from idiots out there who sue for the shit that they buy!

they should have something for those stupid ppl, like -

in the middle of a wall

"WARNING:do not walk into wall, it may cause bodily harm."

Lucid DM 7th June 2001 22:20

Bodily Harm: For dumb people

On packaging for a Rowenta iron:
Do not iron clothes on body.
On a Japanese food processor:
Not to be used for the other use.
On a Swedish chainsaw:
Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or genitals.
On a child's Superman costume:
Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly.
On a Korean kitchen knife:
Warning keep out of children
On a Taiwanese shampoo:
Use repeatedly for severe damage
On a blanket from taiwan:
not to be used as protection from a tornado

So many. So many... :D

mr_sax 7th June 2001 23:55

where are you getting these from!? LMAO

ElChevelle 8th June 2001 00:03

All the tobacco companies have to do is put the following warning on their products:

Warning: Use of this product will kill you.

Easy as that, they're covered.

It's been well known for a long time that smoking was dangerous. If people want to kill themselves, let them do so. I don't have any desire to smoke. I think it's disgusting, and extremely unattractive, but that doesn't mean I want to blame tobacco companies for others' stupidity.

If someone shoots himself/herself in the head because he/she is sleeping with a loaded, cocked weapon under his/her pillow, then should gun manufacturers be held responsible? The risks are obvious, and no one but the gun owner is to blame. <Wow, this paragraph is way too P.C.>

A congressman from Tennessee is trying to do just that.

Yeah I always wondered why they don't put an official warning on the packs. The surgeon general warning says the same thing anyway, but doesn't free them of liability

Anacific 8th June 2001 05:01

Actually in Canada on every pack of cigarettes there should be a colored picture showing cancerous lungs and other disturbing stuff:eek:

It's obscene if you ask me. Tobacco product manufacturers are legitimate businesses, albeit, one's who produce an unhealthy product. Then again, so does McDonald's, mosquito coil makers, and practically every dairy farm.

I agree, making them bankrupt is better than banning.

Xerxes 8th June 2001 09:37

In that case, I am going take up smoking- in 3 years I expect to be a couple billion dollars richer. That would not be abusing the legal system now would it?
