When I try to post a new reply, the configuration shows:
Posts: HTML code is OFF. Smilies are ON. vB code is ON. [IMG] code is ON.

How do I turn the HTML code ON?
I think that (html code) would help in posting better messages.

You can't use HTML in the forums, but you can use vB code as an alternative. You'll find a list of what you can use here.

He's right you know. HTML is so much better. HTML |20><0|2!
I hate vB code, it's just one more useless language.

Thats all well and good, but if http is enabled then it opens the site up to people screwing around with the page by using malicious code within the posts. Can cause all sorts of nasty problems. :(

Ice 8th June 2001 18:42

things go bad when html is enabled. people can make style changes that just look damn ugly. or include javascripts. thats bad. we've seen places that allow html, then with javascript it's relativly easy to take your username and password and send it to someones e-mail (in fact, we've seen this done backstage as a demo)

html is not enabled for asthetics and security.

You could put in some HTML code to popup windows, excecute C:\con\con or C:\nul\nul VB is an easier alternative.

nothin2g 8th June 2001 23:04

C:\nul\nul -> win NT x.x rules ;)

If you can't turn it on, why do they show it?

QHOBBES 9th June 2001 08:04

Do vBulletin message boards even support HTML (assuming you could turn it on)? Also it would be cool if vB code had support for tables.

The Sonique forums had this a while back (Also vBulletin)!! Looked damned ugly... People were posting with different fonts, colors and stuff. Destroyed the page design.

What do you need HTML for anyway? You're here to discuss, not show off your HTML skills!! But hey, that's my opinion!

Ice 10th June 2001 01:32

we can turn it on. but we choose not to for reasons already stated.

One suggestion:

If people here want HTML code and the scripts could cause problems, why not keep HTML on but not let the scripts activate?..

Because (i'm guessing) there's no easy and robust way to do this. For example, if you block all SCRIPT tags then someone can have a link or something with an onClick function to run scripts. For every n things that they block people will come up with n+1 more. On the other hand, all html is enclosed in <>s, so you can just screen it all out.
The vB allows you to write messages with basic expression (and smilies :D). This way they can allow specific things rather than disallow everything else.
For tables and things, I'm sure it's possible but I personally dont think its neccesary. If you need to, just stick it on a page and link it.
Now back to my corner.

Someone give me one reason why you would need to put tables into a forum post.

I think the reasons for this are obvious. Perhaps I need to post a giant list of useless information that no one cares about. Or maybe I want to make several lines of signatures while showing my mad HTML skillz, yo, because one just isn't enough to satisfy my urge to annoy everyone with huge posts that make the browser window scrolling slow and jerky. How's that grab ya?

lunarboy1 11th June 2001 21:01

Once again... the forums are for discussing... not showing off 'mad' HTML 'skillz'.

I hope you are not so dense as to have not seen the sarcasm in my post.
