That's perfect flatmatt...
thanx

flatmatt 4th July 2001 04:29

Okay, sending you the files now.

garetjax 4th July 2001 04:52

Chiquita

To answer...your server supports php and mine asp...

I will be developing primarily for asp and then work on the conversion for your server.

I should have something for you very soon that can begin to be used...

Note, I will have a database that will be used to pull the content from...

The skins themselves will need to be placed on somewhere preferably ftp but, http is fine as well.

I will get to you what I can when I'm closer to completion...

Spanner.throw(inWorks);

Just to throw a spanner in the works.

This idea is cool.

Someone else already had it. Jayn and Kimmo Laine. It's called the Unofficial WSD Archive site, full of tutorials etc etc etc.

I forget the url, but I link to it on the MikroAMP site:
http://www.skinmaster.co.uk/mikroamp

Perhaps you should help with that project and help expand it instead?

They cover a lot of that stuff there.

Other thing, I recommend phpNUKE to run the site.

It's a content mgmt system:
  • Tracks hits
  • Tracks downloads (and you don't have to host them on your site)
  • Reviews engine
  • Article submission system (so people can go write a tut on the site and you can then moderate it)
  • Skinable via themes
  • Full bulletin board system (phpBB)
  • Free, Open Source, PHP

It's what runs fuckingbrit.com and a load of other sites.
http://www.phpnuke.org

WSD is slow and very inactive.. post something on the forum and with luck 2 months later theres a reply..

the tutorials are very good though..

submitting that way they use at WSD isnt too user friendly either

So start a new site engine using phpnuke or something in ASP or whatever. This allows you to update fast and submit well etc etc.

Pool both the WSD (which is the result of something very similar to, and pre-dates the Skin Love forum called the Winamp Skin Development Mailing List which is still wandering along) and SL tuts etc etc to make one resouce covering both official skin discussion areas and blah blah

you get the idea right :lazy:

garetjax 4th July 2001 10:06

Interesting...

Well Chiquita is the project lead I'm just a damned developer. But, in my opinion developing something based upon work that is failing currently is alot harder than making something new and getting it to work correctly. Hence all responses currently in this thread.

Not that I'm saying anyone else work is crap etc...but, a league of sites contributing to one site???

I would rather one site support the needs of the majority without crossing divisions to another location. But, again not my call.

I will do as asked...either way by c.c. :D

The Only Lynx 4th July 2001 11:29

you could ask WSD to join power.. but start from scratch [for the looks and stuff.. and layouts and site navigation] and use the good part of WSD.. [tutorials and stuff] and join powers.. might save time ;) and might liven up the WSD site too

THEMike 4th July 2001 12:05

That is exactly what I meant.

The Only Lynx 4th July 2001 12:22

then i think keetah should contact jayn ;)

garetjax 4th July 2001 12:33

Itz a good idea...

and they are likely more familar with using php than I...I do not its fast...(if correctly developed...)...However, that is basically true of all app/web. Anyways, I'm just rambling. I meant no ill-will towards anyone...just trying to state a fact...

anyone no where I can get MySQL???

THEMike 4th July 2001 13:16

http://www.mysql.org I think.

or http://www.freshmeat.net will have a link.
so does the footer at fuckingbrit.com

with php if you use sth like PHPNuke you don't have to know how to code it :)

garetjax 4th July 2001 13:41

PHPNuke

Where is the fun in that!!!
========================

I love to hand code pretty much everything cept when needing to use api...but, that diff animal altoghter...

:D

Mr Jones 4th July 2001 16:13

Wish I had more time to help CC, the WSD idea sounds good as well, can't wait for the final result :)

chiquita chad 4th July 2001 17:48

sooo... everyone wants me to link up with WSD skins just so we can use their tutorials? After borrowing their tutorials, we just add a link to WSD skins and thats it? or are we talking about complete integration of the two sites?

once im sure of what everyone wants i'll send an email to Jayn

The Only Lynx 4th July 2001 18:46

blending the 2 in one.. but with new name, new looks, new site... kinda taking over and improving.. join powers

flatmatt 4th July 2001 21:19

Tehn what happens to my tutorial? :p

skinme! 4th July 2001 21:45

I agree with THEMIKE on this one. I think it'd be better to consolidate the two sites into one super site with ALL the information and advice you could possible want.

phpNUKE sounds cool. I have no knowledge of PHP or ASP, but I'm sure it would make the site a lot easier and more focused on it's function rather than the pursuit of it's design ;)

Whatever you (and Jayn) decide, I'm in!

Mr Jones 4th July 2001 23:19

Mr B,

What is the matter with you, are you looking to start another flame war with your crude attempt at humor?

Trust me here, tollerance levels are low at the minute for flamers, so if that's your idea, I'd press edit on your post pretty quick.

People are trying to work together to create some good, and they should be applauded for it, not lambasted with tasteless humor, so just pack it in ok?

And a word of warning to anyone else who's thinking of flaming in return DON'T the sin bin beckons.

Jesus, is it summer time already

The Only Lynx 4th July 2001 23:20

LMAO.. and it was nice knowing you.. good luck and bubye

Mr Jones 4th July 2001 23:49

Mr B,

Please check your mail.

Rest of forumites, DON'T flame,it's dealt with.

[edit]Thank you Mr B :), thank you [/edit]

chiquita chad 5th July 2001 17:42

wouldnt it be kinda hard to get all the passwords (database, log-on etc etc) from the WSD ppl? Plus it wouldnt feel like its a site for us and us alone. ill have to ask garetjax about the techie stuff of the collabo if it happens

The Only Lynx 5th July 2001 17:54

ppl will have to resubmit to the page.. but only thing that asks for password there is .. uhm.. i dont even think their forum asks for a password...

submission goes by email at WSD

garetjax 5th July 2001 18:08

Well, my deal...

I use asp and currently learning php...But, I prefer building a website that has administrative features and upload capacity on the site itself. I'd rather build the site to have those features than trying to find some cumbersome way of melding it with someone elses design. While its likely a nice site, I do not think that it would a simply change in their graphics. Rather, I do believe fundamentally they would have to change their complete setup and Sharing of that type of information is very limited between owners of a site. To much vested time to relenquish over to someone else and hoping they don't trash it.

Anyways, you get my idea.

CC...Your server does not support asp...So, I am looking for something that does as this would be the quickest way to get the site out. DomainDLX or Brinkster.com

The database is currently being built and I am assembling Email / Upload components right now.

As for the page layout that will be complete when I am through creating the database.

:)

I think we still need a very 3D'ish Logo...For the site...of which I have not vested any time into...

As for the background of the site, any tiling blueish image will be kewl.

-Joe

The Only Lynx 5th July 2001 18:38

i would love to participate in the site.. anything i can do? i almost finished a skin im working on... and have loadsa time then

chiquita chad 6th July 2001 02:12

ive made a 3-dish logo... it sucks but it has some sweet effects on it... ill post it in here when i upload it somewhere

lynx - why dont you make the skin the official SkinLovin' skin? just add SkinLovin' to the titlebar and maybe on the EQ along with the address... of course it will be seen on the front page ;)

garetjax - either brinkster or whatever the other one will be fine... you're basically running the show as of now... i'll leave an Admin spot for you in the forum ;)

Mr. Bojanglez 6th July 2001 05:54

hmm

good thing neither chad or jax saw that logo I made eh?

when the looks are there i can make a skin after the looks of the site..
or do you just want the base skin altered?

Nini 6th July 2001 10:06

Hello to all, I just noticed the thread or I wasn't too lazy to read it all ;) :D
sounds like a very nice idea :)
and if I can help you somehow just tell me :) I have a lot of free time now :)
Nini

cyana 6th July 2001 12:20

template skin preview

before I go into weekend I wanted you to give you a preview of the template skin so that you can see the direction that it is taking :) - it's not yet finished, but the main window is already close to the final approach - PL and MB just show up as prototype

please let me know what you think

http://www.omnislab.com/images/template.gif

The Only Lynx 6th July 2001 12:32

LOOKS GOOD, VERY GOOD..
only in the MB you miss a few buttons???

cyana 6th July 2001 12:58

thank you Lynx :)
the missing buttons are just due to their low contrast (when you look very closely you'll see they are there) - as I said PL and MB are not brushed up yet - the contrast will be like in the main window

The Only Lynx 6th July 2001 13:17

i'll be damned when i look very close i see some color differences :D

it looks cool man :)

Nini 6th July 2001 13:28

it's good; every area is clearly shaped :)
is it going to be a layerd image for use in PSP/photoshop (what I would suggest-easy to use) or a bmp?

Nini 6th July 2001 17:01

There's something I forgot:

If it's not too much work for you - you could mark the position of the volume button on each volume.bmp-bar - very helpful if you wanna make an animation ;) - for advanced skinners only :D -
The 1st time I used the Blue Sound skin as a template :D

you said you had just finished a skin... i was meaning that you could alter your new skin a little for the site... but if u wanna make a new skin just for the site, be my guest... maybe you and Nini could do a compilation thing 2gether

The Only Lynx 6th July 2001 19:31

i am half way through the skin.. not finished yet.. i said almost finished...

but i will make a new skin when the looks of the site are there ;-)

Nini 6th July 2001 21:30

wanna some help Lynx :D ?

The Only Lynx 6th July 2001 21:41

with the skin for this skin love site?
i think we could make one together :D

you could do all the parts i dont like ;) :p
