i dont' know if this has been brought up before but noticed that if i open winamp, it will disable all tooltips, and when i close winamp, it will be normal again, this problem occours once winamp opens, (don't have to play music).
i have the lastest winamp and here are some of my settings

icon in task tray only.
no "always on top"
oh screw the settings, there are too many, well, if theres an option that can help please let me know, thanks,
(using win98 se)

The relevant options to uncheck would be:
Prefs -> Display:
Use Winamp styled cursors.
Display Tooltips in Winamp's main window.

However, more than likely, this problem is being caused by some dodgy 3rd party plugin you've installed, probably of the General Purpose variety (winamp\plugins\gen_*.dll)

Why do you seem to alienate general purpose plugins as being dodgy? There are plenty of general purpose plugins that are well done... in fact the plugin that is most likely causing the problem here is the NiceMC input plugin. But I still wouldn't call the NiceMC plugin "dodgy"...

NeoRenegade 3rd August 2001 04:50

I would.

There is no doubt that there is a LOT of good plug-ins out there that never cause a problem, but along the same lines, there are a LOT more crappy plug-ins the Author might not have fully bug-checked or updated. gen_nomand and mircEX are two of the worst plug-ins causing problems. With problems like this a bad plug-in is usually the most likely cause.

Defiant 3rd August 2001 21:55

yay

you guys were right, it was niceMC, thanks for the help
too bad... i liked nicemc, if it had the option for closing their MC window, it would have been really good.

i like your quote sawg :)

DJ Egg 3rd August 2001 22:18

Yup, I'm pretty sure you're right APD, I now remember this problem cropping up a few times before in the past and that it was actually caused by NiceMC.
NiceMC also has been known to cause a file association bug, where it associates itself with all compatible image and video formats, without being specified first by the user.

Hey, I suppose I've got so used to telling people to remove gen_nomad or gen_mircex or some other gen_*.dll :D

I know that all GP plugins aren't dodgy, though plenty of them aren't compatible with all hardware setups/system configurations and a fair few have been known to cause problems. Same goes for some DSP, Vis, Input and Output plugins.

Through experience on these forums alone, I can safely say that 66.6% of all problems reported on these forums are 3rd-party plugin related. Sad, but true :(

Naturally, it's impossible to test a plugin under all possible setups/configs before finally publishing it. Though in some cases, I wish they wouldn't bother at all. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I've installed plenty of extra plugins myself, but I've also had to remove a few on occasion too. Best way is to only install one at a time and then check the plugin and Winamp's overall functionality afterwards. If any problems occur, remove said plugin and find another one with similar functionality instead. Simple!

eg. Defiant could replace NiceMC with one of Tara or Weedsoft.

I suppose we could do with Defiant coming back to confirm NiceMC was the cause of the problem.

What bugs me more is when people start saying there's this or that problem with Winamp, but they don't tell you they've installed a few extra plugins . . . and which ones exactly.

To be honest, there should be some kind of disclaimer on the winamp.com/plugins pages stating that people install all 3rd-party plugins at their own risk. In some cases, some people aren't even aware these plugins are 3rd-party. They just wrongly assume they're all Nullsoft Winamp plugins and therefore they must all be safe. They also don't realise that bugs caused by any such plugins are not classed as Winamp bugs and should be reported to the actual author of said plugin.

This would certainly make life easier for us here.

I'm sick of providing tech support for 3rd-party plugins on these forums, as I'm sure many of the other regulars are too.

Yes, as you can see, I'm never one to be afraid to speak my mind. :p

/end mini rant

DJ Egg 3rd August 2001 22:24

Aah, I took so long over my last reply that I see Defiant's already been back to confirm it was NiceMC
Nuff sed!

Defiant 3rd August 2001 23:36

lol

yeah, nice mini rant, i give suggestions to nicemc auther, anyways, sorry about problems with winamp, it's kinda hard for me to write out all of my 3rd party plugins

NiceMC tooltip bug FIX

Well I just went thru each option disabling and re-enabling each one and I found that if you just turn off "disable screen saver" option, the tooltips are fine.

So dont uninstall this great plugin yet, just remove those silly screensavers! ;)

Hope this helps you all, thx for helping me find it was niceMC to begin with!

GaFFy

DJ Egg 6th August 2001 23:16

Aha!
Cheers for the input GaFFy

Does this now officially mean that NiceMC isn't dodgy after all? :D

Whatever the case, you should report this bug to the NiceMC author.
Now that it's been pinpointed, hopefully he'll fix it for the next release. :)

Great advice GaFFy!

DJEgg -
As I said before, I wouldn't call it dodgy even with the tooltip problem... NeoRenegade would though :)

The author has been alerted already but he is no longer working on it. So this is probably the last version.

Good advice though... reporting bugs to the author usually does get problems fixed (gets the dodginess out :D).

thanks, now i can still have nicemc, one more question about nicemc, when we finish watching a movie with it and we switch to music, how do we get rid of that nicemc window? the hide option doesn't close it and if i use alt-f4 it will make the cursor disappear when it's over the winamp window, the only way i can think of is close winamp and reopen, is there an efficient way?

In the configuration, check the option to "Hide video window after [x] seconds" This closes the window at the end of its playback. Seems the option to "Hide video window in the taskbar" doesn't work? Oh well, the hide video window after x seconds seems to do the trick. :)

nope, that option doesn't seem to work for me, when it finishes playing the window just stays there, and if i click hide, it will just minimize

and taht was the order of my reactions :)

well, i have no idea why it doesn't work for me, guess i'll have to restart winamp everytime, thanks anyways
