Hewlett-Packard to Buy Rival Compaq -NYT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Computer giant Hewlett-Packard Co. HWP.N will announce on Tuesday it is buying rival Compaq Computer Corp. CPQ.N for $25 billion in stock, The New York Times reported on Monday evening, citing executives close to the negotiations.....

A few questions come to my mind:

1) What is going to happen to the customer support (for my laptop)??
2) Is this the sign that hell is starting it's wrath????

1) Compaq will most likely remail Compaq, and I doubt anything will change with Tech Support. Read as: "I'm probably gonna be wrong, but..."
2) No, thats when Microsoft buys HP, so that it has a monoply in ALL computer services, from Hardware to Software. Then they'll buy AOL so they can own the Internet too, and charge us 99 dollars month for 28.8kb access.

Yay.

NeoRenegade 4th September 2001 04:18

IBM

[song parody]"Do you think you reeeeeally want a clooone?"[/song parody] *gag*

Don't those jackasses realise they've been third-rate, not first- since about... oh... seven fucking years ago?!

mr_sax 4th September 2001 04:24

good maybe we can see some good computers comin from compaq soon

Yossarian 4th September 2001 05:07

So what's going to happen to Compaq's HQ in Houston? It's only a 10 min drive from my house, and that's where my next summer job was gonna be...

Anacific 4th September 2001 05:34

:eek:Interesting news!

Curi0us_George 4th September 2001 05:37

I seriously doubt that anything noticable will happen. Basically, they get to share hardware and such. Their contracts with manufacturers will be available to each other now. Both companies will probably still produce computers just like they used to, but maybe Compaqs will be upgradable now.

Bizznatch 4th September 2001 05:40

/me wonders if they are gonna change the name of the Compaq Center back to the San Jose Arena, :D yay! go HP!

whiteflip 4th September 2001 09:58

HP bought Compaq? that sounds something like that bitch CEO would do. Hopefully the two shitty pc's may be able to scale up against dell or gateway (yes gateway can be good). oh well who cares my IBM from 97 kicks all yer asses!

hope they dont mess up them pretty ipaqs

}}Killer Wombat{{ 4th September 2001 10:30

oh well, both are shit companies, except compaq owned alpha, but what the hey. HP = shit, Compaq = Shitter.
i hope they die and give me the $25billion that was used to buy compaq, in some weird twist of inheritance going wrong

2 of the stupidest posts I've seen in weeks:rolleyes:

Bizznatch 4th September 2001 13:05

I've seen worse, especially in the Poll: Poll: Poll: Poll: Poll: thread.

mark e 4th September 2001 13:27

Compaq sucks - HP rulzz :p

Curi0us_George 4th September 2001 14:45

Compaq comps are actually pretty stable, in my experience. They are just not easily upgradable.

HP comps are pretty good. They just use value parts (well, not quite as cheap as some) like everyone else, though.

IBM isn't really any better than Dell, and maybe not any better than HP. IBM gave you the wonderful Intel and Microsoft world. Aren't you so glad they decided not to use the far superior Motorola processors and write their own OS?

mr_sax 4th September 2001 14:56

hey hey, IBM kicks ass..

my computer rulez, and it's an IBM
never had any problem doing anything on it.

s1138 4th September 2001 19:59

i just build my own computer..saves me the trouble of messing with a prebuilt system

}}Killer Wombat{{ 4th September 2001 20:00

and why are my comments stupid??
compaq and HP are the worst pcs in the sector, except alpha but what the hey.
they are for dumbasses who don't know their CPU from their CPR.
IBM make extremely good servers. and they mainly use linux, though you can get win2k/NT4 or whatever.

Carmagio 4th September 2001 20:35

Do you ever have anything positive to say.......

}}Killer Wombat{{ 4th September 2001 22:02

umm yes i do realise about compaqs association with alpha, thats why i pointed it out, and i did say something positive, goddamn it, sometimes i dunno if you can read wheat i'm saying

John M 4th September 2001 23:01

i like my HP. my IBM has had problems.

there, no flaming or coarse language, just a strong approval and strong disapproval of 2 different products.

steady puffin' 4th September 2001 23:07

w00t! go HP!

Ice 4th September 2001 23:31

when two mediocre computer companies combine, it doesn't make great computers.

Lain 5th September 2001 00:18

heh, I'm thankful that I have a HP, I used to have a Tandy for cryin out loud!

Omit Name 5th September 2001 01:48

i was told that HP was the worst computer you could buy. but i regarded it as bull so we bought one anyway ... and it fried. :( so we traded it in for a compaq.

that was like 4 years ago, and becuase the hp caused such a problem and convinced my parents that they had to buy the 10 year warranty ( $_$ <--- my dipiction of the guy at circut city when my mom told him of her intrest in the warranty) therefore we are still paying on it, and im stuck with this very compaq. :( (4 years is a long time to droll over faster computers with more memory you know.) it was about $500 before extended warranty which proves even then it wasnt the greatest of computers. <----- true story. ok im done now.

:: point :: compaq is reliable, and if it is gone it shall be missed.
[drama]curse you HP! look...look what you did to me![/drama]

Curi0us_George 5th September 2001 03:03

My HP runs fine. I do want a new graphics card, though.

I think you just might be right.

whiteflip 5th September 2001 06:07

obviously some one doesnt realize how great IMB really is and the true real shitness of Compaq and or HP. I think the only original parts in my ibm are the case power supply and motherboard (soon to be just case and power supply)

It's so great you had to replace almost everything in the case? I know I want one of those. . .

The manufacturer really doesn't matter as long as the parts are standard (the main problem is usually the case). Almost no manufacterer uses custom motherboards or any other PCBs in a prebuilt computer. They all buy from mobo manufacturers, and none of them buy the absolute best.

My HP has a very stable Asus motherboard in it. I've seen IBMs with both video and sound built into the motherboard. I think I'll go with my HP. It's faster and has reusable parts.

}}Killer Wombat{{ 5th September 2001 08:50

IBM are the best for servers, not for home shit, and there HD's are ussaly excellent

Curi0us_George 5th September 2001 08:53

IBM Deskstar 75GXP - yum

John M 5th September 2001 10:11

it this years class orentation, the computer guy got up and said 'look at the 2 guys behind you, look at the 3 guys to the left of you, and the three guys to the right of you, and the 2 guys in front of you. one of these persons had his hard drive fail last year' (The whole class has IBM stinkpad laptops)

maybe i just hate IBM cuz my laptop has been an utter piece of crap. i dont think i'd buy an IBM desktop as readily as i'd buy a dell or HP, but i could be persuaded to try it.

Curi0us_George 5th September 2001 15:23

Your computer guy needs to learn to count above three. :D

I don't know about the laptops, but I own an IBM. Never had any non-windows related probs with it.
I always thought that IBM's had some of the best computers on the market........ apparently I was wrong :)

Curi0us_George 5th September 2001 15:33

Carmagio, I think they are some of the best. I just don't think that they aer really that much better than HPs, on average.

Every manufacturer has put out a couple of models with major problems.

That's understandable (buying an HP or a Dell over IBM) , especially considering the difference in prices. IBM's tend to cost quite a bit more than a similar computer from a competitor. The only bonus I can see with my IBM is the on-site warranty. For two years, if I have any problems with my computer, I call IBM and they send a tech rep to my house to repair it for free.
