False accusations of ripping
 

What, if anything, can you do if someone accuses you of stealing their work when you have done nothing of the kind?

I'm getting burned by a girl for supposedly stealing a skin she made. The main windows are similar, I admit . . . because they were both made from an image that I'm quite sure was put out by Square, and not by either of us. Her skin was never posted on Winamp, or really anywhere . . . she put up a .bmp of how it looked on her site, nothing else, as her host did not permit file downloads beyond graphics. I'd never been to her site before submitting my skin, though I had visited it before she wrote the nasty review I found today. Worst of all, I LIKED her site. I visited a couple of times, enjoyed it, and now she hates me for something I did not do.

Can I protect myself here if she puts in a formal accusation? And what would you suggest I say to her, if anything? (I've e-mailed her once, but I doubt she'll believe a word I say.)

copy this to the Skin Love forum, and give us the name/CID of the girl and her skin who's flaming you. :) We take care of most all rip reports.

(CID = the 5 or 6 little numbers at the end of a skin's URL.)

There's nothing that says we have to remove a reported rip. If your skin isn't the same as theirs, it won't be removed.

The girl's ID here is Mikara Hunter. I can't give you a name for her skin, as it's not posted here. Thanks. At the moment her site is down for maintenance and she hasn't (at least I don't think) posted any formal complaint against me. As soon as it's back up, I fear she might. Unless she does, there's nothing needs doing.

by the looks of it the main image that has been used isnt either of ur image so u cant exactly press charges for someone using the same image as urself,

It's a pretty cheap skin, I readily admit. I was toying with a skin program, saw that no one had a skin of Faris up yet, and thought I'd send it - first one I ever sent, in fact. No, the skin itself isn't worth a huge fuss - but I figured the nuisance this girl could cause for me might be. Sorry to be wasting everyone's time. I only started the thread wondering what I ought to do if she actually put in a formal complaint.

My guess. She made a (crap?) skin by hand with the same image you ran thro a skin app.

Her skin isn't available.

Dunno what the best action is here... perhaps one of the Skin Squad (of Death) should contact her to get hold of a copy then Cast Judgment (of Doom) on the guilty party.

Or everyone should delete all their skins and all .bmp, .jpg and .gif files in the world. Then we call all be happy and go on holiday to crete. Tho not while I'm there cos I don't like people crouding my beach.

The Review Squad has a set of guidelines to follow as does any panel. If you don't agree with their decisions, you have an appeal process at your use, and if you still aren't happy, you have admin email adresses to contact. Now, I join MJ in asking you to please stop flooding the SL forum with irate, useless posts.

Which reviewing squad would this be, hmmm? The one that was instituted to combat the "evil" of people bombing skins and uprating their own? (*cough* not naming names *cough*) You seem to forget that you are about 50% responsible for the new system yourself, because of your childish antics taking advantage of the old one.

..Umm, as I remember, it was not. As I remember, it was no comments from the reviewer on any skin, and almost all skins came out with 3 stars. And all ppl were yelling "Give us a new review system, this isn't working!".

Well guess what bud? Just before the database went down, one of the reviewers (not me but I'm not telling who) deleted a rip of one of your skins. No sh*t, I am not making this up. Now... would you rather that that skin had been posted until the ripper could be given a chance to defend himself? Or are you happy that it got dropped right away? Cause dude, you can't have it both ways. If that skin had gotten posted you would have gone spastic, and you would be critisizing us for NOT doing to it what you are mad that we DID do to yours.

The system is here to stay, good or bad, so quitcher-bitchin and live with it like the rest of us do. Yeah, it sucks that your skin got confused as a rip, but posting millions of "death to the aristos" threads is not the way to get it back up. For once, just follow the rules and play fair. Your patience will be rewarded.
