Winamp and WMP keep Locking Up??
The problems with my old computer I'm selling to my Dad.
The computer is an AMD 200 with 64mb running Win 98 SE It's mainly with Winamp 2.76 and Windows Media Player and seems to be only with Music and video files. They both lock up when opening a file. If you click on a Mp3 file Winamp only partly opens with just a part of the program on screen. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp with the full version but still no better. I did install the Mp3Pro plugin but I have no problems with it on my new computer. I have updated my Direct X to 8.0a with no effect? |
well, if it is both WinAMP and WiMP, run scan disk and a virus scanner, if all else fials re-install Windows

Soundcard & Videocard details?
If you have an SBLive soundcard and you've installed PlayCenter2 . . . read this: The Official 3rd-party Plugin Buglist << Re: gen_nomad.dll >> |
I did a scan disc with no errors found. I have now uninstalled Winamp but am still getting problems with WMP?
Looks like I will have to try a Windows reinstall Can't remember exactly what sound card it is but its not the one you mention. I have searched for that file before when I have read your posts but found nothing. |
You shouldn't reinstall windows. At least not without trying just installing the latest soundcard drivers and DirectX first.

MicoMan has already upgraded to DirectX v8.0a (as stated in his first post)
Soundcard details c/o System Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Sound....Controllers Then goto: http://www.windrivers.com/alpha/sound.htm Locate, d/l & install the latest available drivers for Win98 I was assuming you had an SBLive because that's one of the known problems caused by gen_nomad.dll (parts of the main winamp window not visible), but if the problem is with WMP also, then this probably suggests a driver issue . . . especially if: 1) your pc is 100% virus free 2) scandisk comes up with no errors 3) there are no conflicts or errors listed in System -> Device Manager 4) your hardware is not faulty (including memory chips) |

1) your pc is 100% virus free - I have no Virus software installed but its only just been put back together after a total format.
2) scandisk comes up with no errors - yes 3) there are no conflicts or errors listed in System -> Device Manager - There is a yellow ( ! ) against "Microsoft Kernel System Renderer" and "Advanced Power Management Surport"? 4) your hardware is not faulty (including memory chips) - Not as far as I know. All the other programs are wrking fine? I have a Creative AWE64 16 bit sound card in the computer. I found the newest driver and installed it. I did not have Winamp on so I used WMP 7 but the program would not even start up? I then installed Winamp 2.76 and all seems to work fine until I tried WMP 7 again which still did not work and I ended up with a blue screen and a fatal error! I even tried WMP 6.4 but it freezes as well When I got it going again Winamp wont work now! Is it time for a Windows Re-install? I don't want to have to do it unless I have to because the computer only has a 6 speed drive. Do I need to install the below download as well? SoundFont Manager Installer SFMG-WEB-1-US This is the SoundFont Manager installer (English version) for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0. This release includes better support with third party software that makes use of SoundFonts (e.g. Cakewalk and Cubase VST). I have attached a System report I did if its any help? |
The yellow ( ! ) means trouble with the component. Bring your computer back to the store or into a repair place and show them the problem. It may actually be relevant to what's going on with Winamp/Windows Media Player.

Yes, the system report helps a lot.
Forget about the SoundFont Manager, that's the least of your problems. Your system is a mess! Download & install the latest available drivers for the AWE64. Reinstall the latest available drivers for your videocard. (goto http://www.windrivers.com/company.htm - click video/graphics icon) Re-enable all the devices you've disabled in Device Manager. Remove the 2 devices which are reported as faulty. Reinstall Windows. (sad to say, I don't think you have any alternative) If prompted for soundcard drivers, direct Windows to c:\windows\system (or if it asks for an .inf file, direct it to c:\windows\inf) Make sure all the multimedia components are selected! (equivalent to going to: Add/Remove Programs -> Windows setup tab -> multimedia -> details -> checkmark all components) Audio & video compression are essential. Checkmarking "screensavers" will also install the opengl32 drivers (which are currently not installed on your system) Then, upgrade your DirectX drivers again and upgrade Internet Explorer (again) plus any other important updates . . . (you may even have to re-reinstall the soundcard & videocard drivers again) btw, You're asking for trouble if you use the internet & don't have any virus protection installed. Reformatting doesn't necessarily get rid of viruses, especially if they are dos, boot sector, or memory resident virii. good luck! ps. I see Neo's got a quick reply in before I submitted my lengthy one. Actually, his advice may be the wiser option ;) |
I have now reinstalled Windows and have upgraded to WMP 7.1 and now things are even worse! Total Computer lockup! When I do get it going Winamp seems to work ok its when I try to play an Mpg video file with WMP that the problems start!
I have had enough with it for now but will have a look at what you said tomorrow. Thanks for the info anyway. Anyone got a LARGE Hammer?? |
Where in my advice does it say upgrade to WMP7.1 ???
You'd be best uninstalling that p.o.s. and reinstalling v6.4, believe me! |
