For the love? of skinning...

ok people, disregarding my skinning block, raydream has single handedly
and completely thrown off my grading curve in the last week or so.
Do we all agree or not, that his work is FANTABULOUS!

So, whilst my brain is fried, and all of my skins looking severely pitiful
at least to me (3 stars at best, compared to ion flux and the others
he's done, names escape me) my position on skinning is becoming bleaker.
Now we got this wa3 out .. I don't know if I even want to download it
based on the threads I've been reading about the config files...
sigh... so much work.

I'm dying to take the lead and show all those lazy skinners who
thrive on skinner.exe that if you can't swim, get out of the pool..
but then I remember the days upon days turning into weeks that I
spend/spent on just one skin, and the reasons I do it in the
first place (which are getting harder to come up with lately). I also
remember the grading curve of my skins being at least 4 stars because
of the overload of skinner.exe skins.. so many pros and cons...

I even got myself copies of Photoshop 6, Zbrush, Ulead, and still
trying to get gimp. I keep hoping an idea will pop up at me. No
luck as of yet. The one idea I did come up with sucked even compared
to skinner.exe... plus I couldn't make it work the way I wanted it
to. So its garbage. Didn't even file it with my "unfinished - probably
never to be finished" skins (which has been reduced dramatically since
I put my site up).

ANYWAYZ, getting way ahead of myself. Someone remind me the good
things about being a novice skinner.

What are your top 3 reasons for skinning, even if your skins suck
in your own opinion?

Here are mine.
  1. Makes me feel creative (when I know I have no depth as far as
    imagination goes).
  2. Awesome stress reliever (also a good stress inducer but a
    different kind of stress).
  3. There are still people who like my skins and encourage
    me to continue
(lots to be said for ego boosters).

Ok so help me out. And Raydream, if you ever stop skinning, I'll
personally break you :p

i only skin when i get bored

marc falk 11th October 2001 17:20

the same thing happened to me when Raj I/Os stuff first came out....

and now raydream's here.

eh....

yuh.

anyways. reason for skinning:

1) boredom (something to do that isn't Maths A level homework)

2) i like doing stuff on flash/photodeluxe if i wasn't skinning, i'd be manipulating images.

which reminds me...

i haven't done that for a while *going to find some images to fuck with. i mean manipulate.*

3) ego boosting.

1) I love doing graphics work, and skinning is a great way to practice working within bounds.
2) Get exposure on Winamp.com
3) The sheer joy and ego boost that comes from having people d/l your work.

This is why I've got about 5 skins planned.
I'm worried about what'll happen when WA3 is finalised though. No one will want 2.xx skins anymore.

The main reason is for people's reactions. To see how people react to my work. I'm very pleased with the steady stream of mail regarding Connect-X I've been getting :)

1, i love to skin or use graphics, it gives me a sense of achivement,
2, its something to do, and its creative, i can spend hours just trying to get a play button correct,
3, its knowing that people i dont know have something i made on thier PC's and that they wanted it,

pure fun :)
it's the skinning itself that pleases me - I want to push my knowledge about the graphic tools I'm using, and skinning is the perfect way and motivation to learn more about graphic and animation - the animated cursors of the southern pinwheel project are done with 3 different tools and need more work than the rest of the skin took :D - but can you think of any better excuse for wasting time with animations :D :D ;)

LOL thats one I can relate to Cyana. In fact it was your fault I started on doing animated cursors in the first place.
