How do you convert wav files to mp3 files

I'm trying to convert some wav files into an mp3 format. Does anybody know how to do this? Which plugin do you use and how? I'd appreciate any help.

You can do it with winamp if you download and install the MP3 Output Plugin.

- Then go to preferences (CTRL-P) -> plugins -> output -> and select it here.
- Hit configure to set an output directory. Then go back into winamp and load your wav files into the playlist.
- Make sure that suuffle and repeat are switched off, and play the files.
- When finished, the output directory that you selected should contain the mp3s.
- Go back into preferences - output, and reselect the WaveOut plugin to play your files.

Alternatively, download CDex and use it to convert from wav to mp3.

CDEX is undoubtedly the way to go :)

However, if you want to do it using Winamp, preferably use Peter's Mp3 Output Plug-in which is based on LAME , the best encoder available. The plug-in that ethan_h linked to requires that an ACM codec be installed on your system to be able to encode above 56 kbps.

But use CDEX, it's so much simpler :)

So now "PP's plugins" get renamed to "Peter's plugins" too??? :p

Exactly. Update your links :)

Is CDex better than Music Match Jukebox? Is CDex the best? If not, what is the best ripper software? Price and speed are not important at all, just quality of sound.
Thanks

CDex with the LAME encoder is the best, IMHO.

Yeah CDex is damn good.

If you don't need to play the MP3's you're making on a portable or a DVD player, but you're just going to play them on the computer, then I recommend you use the MPEGplus format instead of MP3.

Yes CDEX kicks any other ripper's ass (except maybe EAC, but I don't use it). And nothing can beat LAME as MP3 encoder.
Enough said :)
