Pause skips ahead?

For my WinAMP, it seems that whenever I pause it, the song has moved ahead a bit when I un-pause it. Maybe it's just me or my music, but I'm pretty sure that what I hear is true. Can you tell me what is wrong, or if this has been discussed before, give me a link to that post?

Which output plugin?
If it's DirectSound then this is a known issue, though one many people don't have a problem with. I personally haven't been able to reproduce it, whereas others have.

Try using this alternative DS Output plugin instead.

If it's with WaveOut, then first of all check your buffer settings aren't too big (Prefs -> Output -> WaveOut config: 2000ms=default). Apart from this, maybe it's a problem with the soundcard/settings/drivers?

WilliamsTH 5th November 2001 23:58

Yeah, I do use DirectSound. Thanks for your advice -- I'll check out the file!

OK I got the new DirectSound driver, and the Pause thing is fixed. However, the sound quality is a bit worse. I wonder if it is the driver or just my laptop sound card...

Lion King 6th November 2001 00:18

describe worse sound quality

on my comp it rustles noticeable, i blamed my old soundcard for it, but the rustling is louder than with the waveout

i didn't compare it with the nullsoft directsound plugin though

WilliamsTH 6th November 2001 01:37

there is a bit more rustling on higher volume levels, and the sound does not seem as crisp

Lion King 6th November 2001 01:43

post your relevant system specs please

mine are:
win98se
directx 8.0
ad1816 soundcard, 16bit isa oem thing
winamp 2.77 + winamp3beta1

WilliamsTH 6th November 2001 02:08

Win 98SE
DirectX 8.0
Compaq Laptop (750Mhz, 256 RAM) with internal ESS PCI Allegro sound card

I have both WA 2.77 and WA3 Beta 1, but I use WA 2.77

Lion King 6th November 2001 02:17

peter, the coder of this plugin, visits this forum and reads most of the tech threads - maybe he can fix it

just wait until he posts in this thread

btw. download the winamp3 directsound plugin by peter and test it: http://blorp.com/~peter/zips/cnv_ds2.zip
i get rustling with the wa2 and the wa3 plugin

Lion King 9th November 2001 15:18

peter?

peter 9th November 2001 15:56

(been offline)
both WA2 and WA3 versions are quite the same, if one of them does lame things, the other one is very likely to do so.
1. try enabling exclusive mode & primary buffer in out_ds2 config.
2. make sure that there are no other programs using your soundcard running in background.
3. update sound card drivers, install latest directx, etc.

Lion King 9th November 2001 20:38

quick reply: 2+3 already done, directx 8.0a fixes only 2k bugs - no need to upgrade

more later

edit: yeah less rustling with the two options turned on, but i got error on a playlist with one mp3 (input: mad) and repeat on: couldn't set cooperative level. error code: 887800a0

???

edit2: error kinda reproduced, but does only happen with that one file, a playlist with two or more files or one other file works, i'll check the mp3 for errors

btw. how do i change the settings of the winamp3 plugin?

peter 9th November 2001 21:18

eh ?
cooperative level has nothing to do with input files. certain *cough* shitty drivers tend to do lame things if winamp's main window is minimized while initializing directsound.
another thing - i belive that problems with sound quality were related to minimizing winamp's window too.

[edit]
from dsound.h
code:
// Another app has a higher priority level, preventing this call from
// succeeding
#define DSERR_OTHERAPPHASPRIO MAKE_DSHRESULT(160)

that's the error you're getting

[edit2]
IDEA: use gapless mode to prevent directsound reinitialization while switching files; should shut up some of errors.

[edit3]
(plz stop editing your post)
WA3 plugin can config can be edited in studio.xnf. it seems that cnv_ds2 primary buffer mode does lame things (hacking in progress).

Lion King 9th November 2001 21:22

oops, edited again while you posted

seems to be file specific???

edit: not file specific, mp3 file has no errors

i'll try gapless mode

again, are any wa3 settings possible?

peter 9th November 2001 21:26

have you tried regular in_mp3 instead of MAD ? could you post more info about that file ?

Lion King 9th November 2001 21:37

well i have two winamp setups, trying the other one (which is eats more resources because it has all kinds of input plugins installed - not good while browsing)

seems to work so far with the fhg decoder
found the options in wa3, thanks

sorry about editing my posts

Lion King 9th November 2001 21:44

o.k. no more editing in this thread
does also not work with the fhg decoder without gapless mode (playing a different mp3 now)

i'll let the file play with gapless mode until it stops (or hopefully not stops)

peter 9th November 2001 22:10

cnv_ds2 updated (primary buffer mode works).
could you post more info about that mp3 ? (copypaste from in_mp3 infobox)

Lion King 9th November 2001 22:17

gapless works

the mp3 is o.k. but if you want:

Size: 6142982 bytes
Header found at: 0 bytes
Length: 383 seconds
MPEG 1.0 layer 3
128kbit, 14731 frames
44100Hz Joint Stereo
CRCs: No
Copyrighted: Yes
Original: Yes
Emphasis: None

and the second one:

Size: 3551690 bytes
Header found at: 0 bytes
Length: 221 seconds
MPEG 1.0 layer 3
128kbit, 8517 frames
44100Hz Stereo
CRCs: No
Copyrighted: No
Original: No
Emphasis: None

btw. exclusive mode means that eg. gamesounds and winamp don't work together, right?
i don't need that, but maybe that's the reason why WilliamsTH uses the directsound plugin

peter 9th November 2001 23:11

(looks like an ordinary MP3 to me)

yes, exclusive mode will kill game sounds, and there's no workaround (really) except for getting better soundcard.
