Winamp as default Audiocd player in XP pro
For some reason I have been unable to get Winamp to set as the default player for WinXPpro even after I set it to associate with AudioCD. The Windows Media Player keeps taking over no matter what I do. Anyone got an idea? Winamp 2.77 plays my CD's perfectly but I get choppy sound from my Audio CD's with Windows Media Player, so naturally i want winamp to open my CD's automatically.
If necessary, here is my Hardware Configuration: Soundcard SBLive!Value with latest drivers. Speakers Creative Labs SBS20 Stereo. AMD K62-550/384MB PC100/Diamond Stealth III 540Xtreme 32MB AGP 2X Video/FIC VA-503+ Main board/Creative PC-DVD X2/3GB free HDD space. Thanks!!! |
 Anyone have an idea?

Isn't there an option to uncheck in WMP7 to unassociate it from AudioCD?
(Tools menu -> Preferences -> Formats tab) Does the checkmark in Winamp Prefs stay checked when you go back in, or does it mysteriously become unchecked by itself? Is there an entry in Windows Folder Options -> File Types tab for N/A - AudioCD ? If yes, then what's the default action & command line? (Advanced button) If no, then that's your problem. http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q259/4/73.ASP *update* Check this thread for further help/tips: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=69942 |
Still no go for Winamp as default player in XP
I'm very late to this thread but I stumbled upon it because I have the same problem. I followed all you suggestions and Winamp is associated as the mp3 player in every setting I can find in XP, BUT whenever I play an mp3, %$#@1^ Windows Media player launches the song!@!WTF??? The icon won't even change to the Winamp one. Even after I go to View/Tools menu -> Preferences -> Formats tab. I don't get it. Gone back in to Winamp prefs to make sure all files are associated with Winamp, etc., still no go. any other ideas?

Hmm . . . but the problems above relate to AudioCD's, not mp3's.
Are these MP3 files: 1) on your hard drive? 2) on a burned CD-ROM ? 3) on the internet (ie. streams)? 4) Definitely MP3 files with the extension *.mp3 ? In the following order, have you been to: 1) WMP7 -> Tools menu -> Options -> Formats tab and unchecked MP3 Format Sound (mp3, m3u) ? 2) Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Filetypes and selected MP3, M3U, and PLS ? 3) Windows Explorer -> Tools menu -> Folder Options -> File Types tab Scroll down for & select MP3 Click the "Advanced" button* Description should be "Winamp Media File" Default action should be "Play in Winamp" App used command line (c/o Play in Winamp -> Edit) should be: "C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winamp.exe" "%1" *You can also click the "Change" button and browse to winamp.exe to make winamp the default player Then go back to "Advanced" and click the "Change Icon" button. Select the same icon from within Winamp.exe that you chose in Winamp Prefs -> Filetypes. |
thanks for your quick reply. The prob. I had was playing mp3's off my hard drive. I followed all the suggestions, and fianlly I was able to switch Winamp to the deafualt player in :
Windows Explorer -> Tools menu -> Folder Options -> File Types tab Scroll down for & select MP3 Click the "Advanced" button* Description should be "Winamp Media File" Default action should be "Play in Winamp" I did all this, and Media player was STILL the default player. Strangely, I tried a "restore" button in that section, and it defaulted all mp3's to Winamp.Don't ask me to replicate that action again I went back and couldn't find that restore, but I'm back in business. Thanks Buck |
Cool
Yeah, if the default program/action gets modified somehow, then the "Advanced" button turns into "Restore", and vice-versa. Yes, yet another mighty Micro$oft screw-up. Anyway, glad to hear you've fixed the problem. Yay! :) |
