First human clone

http://www.advancedcell.com/pr_11-25-2001.html

Scary!

I think that it is quite disturbing. This will mean that some diseases can be terminated for good. I think that a virus will always find an other way to spread itsself. Just look at the many variants of HIV/Aids or cancer.

I also can belive that someday they will invent "the perfect human", with only the good qualities from the humanity. Or the very opposite of it, a well trained battle machine made to kill as much as they can in periods of war.

I blow things over here a bit but I was curious, what's your opinion about it? I personally think that's not a good thing.

Nofx Guy 26th November 2001 16:28

yeah just think, you could clone yourself and then live forever, in a way.....

A person is more than just the body that he or she consists of. There is memories, intellect, experience, maybe even soul. Cloning in the sense that you speak of has been provided by nature for years in the form of identical twins. Would you consider twins to be one and the same person?

or clone someone you don't like without them knowing, and have the clone go around breaking all sorts of laws (assassinate bill gates) and stuff like that...

The "paradox of the twins" comes to mind.

Cancer isn't a virus... Cancer is the process of uncontrolled cell proliferation... Just wanted to point this out :) Carry on...

NuLoser 26th November 2001 19:36

Bah, this is no diffrent they any other major technology improvement ever. There is always the chance of abuse. Just a case of technophobia

Aeroe 26th November 2001 20:14

as long as the preborn aren't harvested. a freaky scenario would be labs that soley grow humans just for spare parts.

now copying embryonic (sp?) stem cells will be great, that's if the scientists can actually produce what they all have been been barking about. such as a fix for nerve damage and parkinson's disease... blah blah.

The Matrix?

Xerxes 26th November 2001 21:09

Thats growing humans for bioelectricity.

All i have to say, is hopefully this clone is the first of many.

Bilbo Baggins 26th November 2001 21:19

NOT ANOTHER NIXON

:D

I do not like the idea of cloning. We are all individual, in looks as well as personality. We went too far with genetic engineering. We have got to put a stop with this shit at cloning.

NOW!

Bilbo Baggins 26th November 2001 21:22

Surely the point of disease is to control the population of the afflicted animal.

NeoRenegade 26th November 2001 21:59

Human cloning? Yay!

Let's be like the Weyoun (Star Trek: DS9) and reincarnate the same great leader over and over again :D

In our case, we should take the shroud of Turin, pull a JP and replace the missing parts of Jesus' DNA and bring him back for good :)

PS Yeah I know it's likely not really Jesus death shroud. Still, it would be hella cool.

i like the whole idea of cloning, because then, when the technology is advanced enough, people can select what their child will look like, what his perosnality be like an other stuff, of course there would be restrictions, i mean u wouldnt be able to "order" a killing machine. but i think this is good because it would eliminate all the bad, gentically transfered things such as diseases, overweightning, and such.. you might not agree, and i'm not necessarilly saying it'll work, just my opinion.

Xerxes 27th November 2001 00:47

Wouldn't anyone rather have a cute family Nixon over a family dog, or is that just me? :) :) :)

heil hitler!

exactly what he wanted, a "perfect" breed but to who's standards?
that's just freaky too though...

I don't think the gov't would ever alow that. Think of the havoc it would throw into sports leagues and beauty pageants, 2 name 2 major things. They'd either have to screen genetic alterees, or be very unfair to "natural" people, or start ridiculous institutions like the "superhuman olympics".

The movie "Gattaca" with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman intelligently explores these issues- anyone here like that movie?

deathazre 27th November 2001 01:28

yeah, watched that once.
ever notice the play on words with "invalid"?

To me, Gattaca didn't delve enough into the possibilities of its subject.
Still, it was a rather good movie.

DJ ROACH 27th November 2001 08:26

i think lots of bad things could become of it, but lots of bad things can become of anything, proper control and wisdom well be what makes it right or wrong. i know its a bit diffrent but people were just as scared of computers back in the day, theres always going to be fear of the next advance only because it has no sure outcome. as long as we dont abuse, exploit or control another human (clone) then i see no harm. if done in bad taste for the wrong reason like war then no, its wrong. i think its something we cant stop, so we need to take the preventive to the explotaion of cloning. im sure in our lifetimes we will see a cloning comision of some kind.

I really liked that movie. :)

Yeah it's based in a fully cloned nation, but other then that it doesn't really work much on the cloning topic, other then to show the problems (aka hitler type control) cloning could lead to.

It's mainly just a "Not so perfect Man with drive and passion for his goal beats the evil government at it's own game" type movie.

Is there something I am not seeing in it?

Note: I saw it years ago. (usefull info: SNYder has a shakey memory)

weedsatan 28th November 2001 00:14

Never seen the movie..
/me is still looking for a decent rip.

DJ ROACH 28th November 2001 00:29

i know a few woman i wouldnt mind cloning.
