Saturday at the Orchestra

In 2 hours, I will be at the Orange County Performing Arts Center to attend a full orchestra, full chorus performance of Handel's The Messiah - A masterpiece of baroque classical music. I'm very excited, as Handel is my favorite of all composers.

Does anyone here also go to orchestra or classical performances? What was the last concert you attended? Did you Like it?

Tonight after the performance, I will tell you my thoughts about it. I think it will be an excellent show.

Something I enjoy occaisionally, maybe once a year is plenty, just as a reminder of what a real orchestra is. You can listen to music a lot but easily loose sight of what goes into it's production. It's a bit obvious to say this, but an orchestra is one of the largest, most complex and versatile musical instruments devised by man and seeing one played is a joy.

I have many happy memories of concerts in Canterbury Cathedral. The Catherdal gardens were a favourite gathering point for the local heads on a sunny summer evening, and if there was a concert on you could sneak in the back for free and get up into the choir. You couldn't actually see the concert, which was down in the main area, the other side of the trancept, It was glorious to sit in the fading light with just a glimmer of sun to light up the colours in the stained glass and listen to the music as it rose up from the nave below.

The 'Messiah' was particularly good given this sort of treatment (and you didn't have to do the stand up, sit down bits either):)
Other pieces I remember were 'The Dream of Gerontius' and the Vaughan Williams Thomas Tallis thing.

Rolling out into the Buttermarket for a couple of pints rounded off the evening perfectly. Ahhh, the joys of living in a medieaval city, so compact, so user friendly.

i've never been myself but it would be a heck of a good time
/me grows envious
actually we have a world renowned orchestra here in rochester
they travel the world and are extremely well known-
- well what do you expect from an institution like
the eastman school of music.
...... that gives me an idea;
maybe i'll get tickets for valentine's day
that would be a very romantic way to spend an evening
(depending on the composer of course)

-hope you have a great time xerxes, let us know how it is :)

It was a wonderful day- first, a nice Dinner at Wolfgang Pucks- and then to the performing arts center.

Handel's Messiah was wonderfully rendered by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra- The overture in the beginning was perfect, the harpsichord on the mark and the 4 string sections each played their part perfectly without tripping on each other (I have heard the overture to this song massacred before). The baritone and the Female Tenor performed very well, and the 120 person chorus, the crowning jewel of the ensemble, was the most supurb of them all. They were able to fill the whole theatre with a joyous heavenly ethereal sound.

The Halleujah Chorus, as usual, was the audience favorite. Everyone did stand up for that section. (A tradition attributed to King George of England)

And the "Trumpet Shall Sound" finale at then end, the most "Handel" sounding part of it all, was also very good- the chorus weaved in and out perfectly with the orchestra. It finished very strongly and with a standing ovation.

All in all a wonderful performance. :) :) :) Right now I'm glowing with happiness... there is just a wonderful feeling I get attending an orchestra (And esp. a piece that I like) that I don't get from anything else in the world.

I will give you all a taste of it come sunday. Do you guys want the Halleujah Chorus or the Overture as my MP3 of the coming week? :)

Last time I went to an Orchestral performance was uhh 2 years ago in Washington D.c. A solo violinist was the feature of it all. It was a great performance. Last concert I performed in was a month ago :) I play clarinet.
