While I'm at it with this question asking stuff. . .

I just downloaded winmx and I've never used it before. . .does it have any significance whatsoever when some of the text is red? What is the difference between red text and the green text?

red means a shit download = 56k server

green means more reliable = cable, DSL, T1 etc

yellow is ISDN

I haven't used winmx in a little while, but I think the red text means that the user you are trying to download from has his/her que already filled up.

That means that you can't download the file until someone else finishes downloading.

Remember though, that people can lie about their connection type. I am listed as a 56K to detour people somewhat from downloading from me. As it is right now I have 38 songs in que and 4 downloading from me. ( I share lots of files).

I have downloaded at speeds of 90+kbs from people listed as 56K modem.

ps I am finally back online. My cable modem was broken, that is why I was having so many problems. They came and gave me a new modem today ~ all is well!

Hehe, not from mine you wont :D - but when I've used it at work I noticed the same too - that lots of 56k users probably had cable modems in disguise!

That's a reason why pinging the results can be useful - if a 56k modem comes back on 0ms they're obviously lieing.

Either that or they have got a superb ISP!!!

It's all relative to how you set your bandwidth throttle.
You can set the download throttle to a really high number
with a 56k and increase speed.
You can set a really low upload bandwith to throttle down
the speed of a T1 line uploading from you.
Or you can set both high for faster up and down loads.
But if you throttle down uploads, your gonna piss off a lot people.
That's why some folks who show a cable connection, you can't get
fast downloads from. They've got the throttle set down.

papadoc, I have my bandwidth throttle set at the highest for both upload and download. I dont see that much difference in the speed for people downloading from me.

I need to negotiate more bandwidth from my cable company. They dont give much. 1140up/118down.

Any suggestions on negoating?

Same here.
If you have your throttles set as high as possible,
you've done everything possible to get the most bandwidth open
that your connection will allow.
What makes the difference you see or don't see,
is how the other person on the other end has their's set.
You have no control over that.
One night I chatted with a guy on another T1.
We decided to increase both throttles to the max.
We then resumed sharing files.
The increase in speed was dramatic, quite noticeable.
But that rarely happens for me because allot of people won't
open up their bandwidth for whatever reasons.

No suggestions on negotiating. I've never tried that.
Since I'm wireless, my bandwidth is way out there anyway.
(so to speak)
I'd be interested to hear what you can get out of them.

I just found out from an honest tech support guy that I have been paying for the Gold service all along. What that means is that my speeds are suppose to be 256up/1mg down. What that means is that I am being played for a fool. I have been paying for the gold service and getting the bronze service.

They dont take calls after 5pm so I have to wait until tomorrow to get to speak with someone about this issue. Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr................

Thanks for the support pap. I got ahold of a tech that tried to tell me I am getting what I am paying for. Luckily for me, I read this group and dslreports.com and I had the knowledge and proof I needed to argue my case.

Beware of Charter all ~ They have been telling me the same thing and ripping me off for 6 months now. They think just because I am a girl I dont know what I am talking about.

about winmx, what pisses me off is when i try to get something from someone, they'll cancel it, i'll just retry out of habit, then they'll start swearing at me for trying to get the bloody song
