Never ever ever again

I am never ever ever ever ever... installing anything made by Norton again.

I installed Norton AV yesterday, rebooted, only it wouldn't boot into windows. It showed my desktop and loaded absolutly nothing else. It has done this before when I've tried it. But I just couldn't round it this time. I tried un-installing it in safe mode but that didn't work. I resorted to reinstalling Win98 over the top, which proceeded to not work. I then had to format and reinstall AGAIN (I re-install win98 once a week on average due to feck ups!) Reinstall everything, drivers the lot and now it seams ok. But I got really pissed off with it and it put me in a right mood.

Well that was my Tuesday.:(

your problem was that windows wasn't loading a shell. All you needed to do really was to edit system.ini, and where it says "Shell=xxxxx.xxx", just change it to explorer.exe or c:\litestep\litestep.exe (if you are intellegent).

fwgx 17th January 2002 17:33

It didn't change that at all, it just froze before it could do anything else.

Curi0us_George 17th January 2002 17:46

If you are reinstalling weekly, you can't blame Norton. There is something else wrong.

Rant 17th January 2002 17:48

If you're reinstalling Windows weekly there's one Norton product you shouldn't be without .... Ghost.

fwgx 17th January 2002 17:49

I'm a chronic tinkerer(sp?) So I can blame it on myself usually :( I just can't leave something that works alone for some reason.

Curi0us_George 17th January 2002 17:51

I used to reformat about once a month, but I got tired of wasting my time. Now, I just install, and if everything works, I leave it alone. I don't update drivers. I don't do anything. I can't run Mech4 for very long before it crashes, but hell, if I try to fix that, I'll mess up something else. Screw it. I can do without.

Gonzotek 17th January 2002 17:53

I suffer from the same malady: Chronic Tinkeritis. ;)

Here's a suggestion from one sufferer to another. Next time you get your system reasonably well working, make a backup using Ghost(or something similar if you won't use Norton). Then next time you've got to reinstall, you won't have to go through the trouble of loading drivers, apps, and such.

I took a copy of my main drive with windows on, yesterday using TakeTwo, So I'll use that in future. It's :weird: TakeTwo has never worked for me before, hasn't detected me CDrw drive :weird:

In general, i think Norton is garbage. Other than Norton Ghost, the cleansweep et all is a waste of time, money and resources.

rm' 17th January 2002 19:52

I wouldn't touch the Win9x family with a ten foot pole. After switching to win2k, I noticed that virtually all my computer problems have disappeared.

Curi0us_George 17th January 2002 19:59

I don't use much of anything from Norton, but some of the stuff in Norton Utilities can come in handy when you've got computer (especially hard disk) problems that you are trying to diagnose.

I think NAV is the best antivirus software on the market.

fwgx 17th January 2002 20:25

I think it is a virus

Huehuetenango 18th January 2002 00:38

(pm me if you guys know how i could, wink wink)

I agree with this.

I dislike it's tendency to hijack your computer. I've noticed that all Norton products like to do that. Sure, protection is a good thing, but not so much protection that it gets obtrusive to day-to-day affairs.

Curi0us_George 18th January 2002 01:10

Every application you could possibly install now tries to jack your computer. Just turn off all of the auto-start crap inside the program. Then delete anything left in the startup (msconfig is back in XP, dint ya know?).

Curi0us_George 18th January 2002 01:20

I normally hack the registry, too, but it's nice to have it available. I still remove stuff in the registry because I don't have it ask me if realize I'm in "diagnostic mode". It's easier to guide other people through msconfig than the registry, though.

rm' 18th January 2002 01:33

But Norton plays the evil international terrorist level of hijacking, by denying you access to your own files and messing with file permissions.

Do you REALLY REALLY need an antivirus?

Really look at what you do online. Is the almost exactly the same routine? Same websites? Same reliable downloads? Only open email attachments that you know are good? Do you use an email client?

I wont lie, i don't run a antivirus and haven't for more than a year. No problems what so ever. Might ask, how do you know if you had a virus? I check every few months and nothing.

Email? I think i got got on a mailing list with the nimda virus but all spam goes to the trash folder anyways.

Just my humble opinion.

Curi0us_George 18th January 2002 09:11

It depends on what software you are using. If you are using Eudora or Outlook, then you shoud really run some sort of AntiVirus software every so often. If you are using an email client without gaping holes, then you could be less cautious.

If you are running potentially exploitable apps, you should really scan every once in a while.

We don't bother with an anti-virus either. Waste of HD space and resources. All my email comes through Hotmail which scans it for me.

fwgx 18th January 2002 12:52

I'm tempted to XP on now even though everything is ok and running well. I hate my condition.

jns 18th January 2002 13:16

I'm still running 98, if I'm going to upgrade it'll be to 2k, nothing else.
Microsoft just keeps pumping out more 'n' more crap.
I wonder what OS they'll release tomorrow?
Something made as fast as the latest must've been can't be good or stable.
And with the stability of 98.. please! I don't even want to dream of how unstable something written over a night could be.
Gawd, I need to get slackware installed again.

Curi0us_George 18th January 2002 13:38

XP was hardly written overnight.

You do realize that the Linux kernel was written by a college student in his spare time? And that it was a clone of Minix, which is a clone of Unix?

Linux is a clone of a clone, written by a college student. Sounds great, eh? :D

jns 18th January 2002 13:52

But it is!
That actually means it is written in spare time, out of love for it!
XP, thus written in work time, perhaps by someone who really really would like to get their ass out and go home.. eh? :p

Aeroe 18th January 2002 17:23

about all av's have become bloated messes today. something fast, easy on resources, and dependable with frequent updates seems to be a thing of the 90's...

hell avp 3.0x (american version) was great then, so was kaspersky and norton before they just started adding more and more crap. panda was unknown and very good, now they're very good and very slow.

one of the great advantages of linux, no worries about that sh!t. well not until recently.
