jarsonic 22nd January 2002 03:44

... first, of all, it will never be called "linamp." ;)

Second, it's still in development... wait a few weeks.

General
Why is the Linux version crappier then the Windows version?
Windows comes first, sorry. The Linux port is based on a pretty old snapshot of the Winamp3 code and is in the Very Alpha state. Give it time, then you can bitch later. Here it is straight form the horse's mouth:
Quote:

We're doing our primary development on win32. We're not working on mac at all at the moment. The Linux version was started by Christophe and taken over by Keith. He's working from a snapshot of the code (as of alpha 667 or so). In a little less than a month (we hope) we will bring the linux code and the win32 code into one tree so we can develop on either one easily and neither one will be better or worse than the other.

Will Winamp3 for Linux be open source?
Nope. AOL has corporate interests to protect.

The skins on Winamp.com are EXE, what's the deal?
The skins on winamp.com are currently packed with NSIS and are EXEs. The actual skin file is in the WAL extension (Winamp Abstraction Layer). Currently they are packed because Winamp3 does not associated WAL with its self. By final release expect winamp3 to register WAL and take the download (at least for Windows users), but they will be WAL files and can be saved directly into the Winamp Skins folder.

Why not call it Linamp?
Nope
Quote:

The name Winamp, at this point, has 0% ZERO ZEEERO NONE NO NOTHING NOHOW NOT ANY thing to do with Windows. If we called the Linux version Linamp, we would be implying that it did. At this point it's just a name, a very famous one, and a pretty good one. So it's Winamp, not WinAmp, not WinAMP, just Winamp, no matter the platform.

Bugs
Why does it require 24/32-bit display?
That will hopefully be improved in a later version; it is listed as a bug in the Linux Readme.

Libpng Errors?
Make sure your color depth is 24 or 32-bit. 16-bit will give you errors.
Reference 1 Reference 2 Refrence 3

Why do I get Guru Meditation errors when I try to load a skin?
Most (if not all skins) are made with the Windows version in mind and are built around the current beta. The Linux version of Winamp3 is based on an old snapshot of the Win32 code are about Alpha 667, therefore the skinning engine is kind of out of date. Look for the Linux version and Win32 version to be at the same level soon.

thanx to sawg for this FAQ

I think redline knows it's not going to be called linamp, he was just calling it that affectionately, or so people understood what he meant at a glance. I might be completely wrong though of course.

I'd like to get it running on my Lihnucks box at some stage, might wait for it to get integrated to the current dev though. I wonder how they plan to do the transparency with it.

Thanks LENZ I was joking and really didnt expect anyone to think otherwise. Thats why I put a smiley face after the subject!

Good point! I hope the new RENDER extension is finished soon for X.

LENZ.NET 22nd January 2002 12:40

Getting slightly off topic, I tryed to implement the transparency in aterm across to my windoze X server. Needless to say it was crap and didn't work at all. Damnit. I thought maybe Winaxe converted the commands for the pseudo transparency to proper win2k alpha blending.

But alas it did not. :-(

I do believe that x 4.2.n now supports native alpha, although it requires you build the latest greatest QT. (and have a CDE that supports it.)
