Skinning help needed. Regarding PS 6.0

How do I edit the main.bmp with PS 6.0? I just recently got photoshop 6.0 and was wondering how to use it effectively. Right now i'm trying to do stuff with the main.bmp. When i go to make a new layer all the buttons are greyed out and it shows it locked. I can also not use the gradient tool.I'm using the basic 2.x skin. Do I have to make individual parts then paste them on? Help me out plz.

Could someone also give some good tutorial suggestions?

Have you tried converting the main.bmp to a 16 million colour image?, I'm guessing the template you are using is a 256 or 16 colour image, PSP6.0 won't work in layers with images less than 16 million colours.

Do ...

Colours > Increase colour Depth > 16 million (24bit)

This should then allow you to create and use a full colour pallete, instead of the reduced windows one, and also allow you now to use raster layers on your image.

The skin you have downloaded as a sample has indexed color palette. You will be able to edit the skin normally after you convert it to RGB mode. In PS 6.0 you should choose Image -> Mode -> RGB to do that.
About the suggestions: When I was making my skin I put the background into the separate layer and made it 75-80% opaque. This workes rather well - you always see, where you should draw and where you shouldn't.

Thanks for the very simple answer.
