what the hell u on about?

rm' 29th January 2002 19:22

Don't fix it if it ain't broke! There's no need to put a 2 GHz P4 in a pocket calculator if a 2 cent IC will do the job.

Bizzeh 29th January 2002 19:25

a 2cents ic runs better than a 2ghzP4... and if you had a P4 in ur Pocket Calc... its wouldnt fit in ur pocket

That reference to NASA reminds me of this joke:

There was a man who computed his taxes for 1998 and discovered that he
owed $3407. He packaged up his payment and included this
letter:

Dear IRS:

Enclosed is my 1999 Tax Return & payment. Please take note of the
attached article from the USA Today newspaper. In the article, you will
see that the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA has paid
$600.00 for a toilet seat.

Please find enclosed four toilet seats (value $2400) and six hammers
(value $1029). This brings my total payment to $3429.00. Please note the
overpayment of $22.00 and apply it to the "Presidential Election Fund,"
as noted on my return. Might I suggest you send the above mentioned fund
a "1.5 inch screw." (See attached article...HUD paid $22.00 for a 1.5
inch Phillips Head Screw.)

It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year, and I look forward
to paying it again next year.

Sincerely,

A satisfied taxpayer

My point was that if what you are using is doing the job, then there is no point in spending (taxpayers!) money on an upgrade. I commend NASA for spending their money wisely, at least on this project.

Yes, especially since they still fucking burn your bread.

If you live where I do, clothes are absolutely essential to keep your bum from freezing to a metal bench

RM, nobody cares about Canada. :D

rm' 30th January 2002 02:48

John M 30th January 2002 02:53

maybe we can merge canada with north dakota or something so we dont mess up the 50 states thing :p

rm' 30th January 2002 02:55

God no! North Dakota never did anything to you!

I say we get a great big chain saw, cut North America in half, and set Canada adrift ;)

Hey, since we've got another thread about what you can buy for a dollar . . . You could buy about three million Canadian dollars. :D

I don't think we should set it adrift. The damn thing would start crashing into our oil tankers just to spite us. :D

Rob Weee! 30th January 2002 03:41

Useless shite we still use:
Racism.enough said.

rm' 30th January 2002 03:45

It has a use. Just a very unpleasant, undesirable use that can be had through better means.

Spiffed 30th January 2002 03:47

The penny, who actually needs the difference in change between 0 and 5 cents? or between 5 and 10cents??

So long as were also aparently on the topic of paying taxes these 'extra' cents could be automatically collected and paid towards our taxes, it'd add up after a while.

Besides who uses paper money and coins anymore?? Two words: Direct Payment

rm' 30th January 2002 03:50

We need pennies for 99 cent deals dude :)

That's impractical for small items, newsstands, borrowing money from a friend, and so on.

I wasn't trying to abolish money, i was just trying to abolish PAPER money and COINS. Up here we canucks rarely use actual tender anymore, we all pay by something called DEBIT (looks like debt, coincidence, i think not).

Basicly we can pay virtually anywhere with our bank cards

rm' 30th January 2002 04:09

I live in canuckland, and we all use loonies and cents and twoonies and fins. I don't know what you're talking about.

Spiffed 30th January 2002 04:20

you mean to tell me you've never heard of Interac??? Where do you live??? Past the middle of nowhere???

rm' 30th January 2002 04:22

I never said I never heard of Interac. I live in Toronto (very very very close to it), and we all use paper money and coins here.

Spiffed 30th January 2002 04:30

Ah well, i'm out in Mississauga (not THAT far), and all though i'll admit to carrying paper money with me (There's nothing like $800 in 20's to make you feel flush). I know virtually noone else who uses 'real' money for anything beyond maybe paying for coffee.

Case in point: I currently work cash for a local fastfood joint, and tonight (shift ended 4hrs ago) only 2 people out of the godknows how many hundred paid by cash, everyone else paid using either a VISA/MC or Interac.

Yeah, that's about all 800 Canadian dollars will get you now, isn't it? :D

By the way, I use my debit card almost all the time, but that doesn't mean I'm in favor of abolishing tangible currency. What do you think happens when the debit and credit systems go down? If you don't have cash, you don't eat. The debit and credit systems do go down occassionally, too. Plus, the convenience of cash can't be matched.

Spiffed 30th January 2002 05:26

yup, thats about all that that $800 canadian will get you and only a medium at that.

But interms of the convience of cash i'm not sure, with Debit all i need to carry is one card in my wallet, and four numbers in my head, and then i don't need to worry about haveing enough cash on me anymore. Unless the debit systems go down debit is deffinitley much more convienent then cash IMHO.

Besides, keeping $800 in the bank as oppossed to in my back pocket has helped to correct the slanting problem i had when i sat down

rm' 30th January 2002 05:28

What happens if you are short on cash and need to borrow 5 bucks from your buddy to buy lunch?

Spiffed 30th January 2002 05:32

well... whats stopping your friend from swiping his card for your $5 meal?? Most vendours will even allow you to split your purchase between more then one card (if you ask nicely).

But i'm not trying to promote Interac here, it's made my job a hell of a lot more difficult, and personally i still carry cash for most things. I just think that paper money is starting to become a thing of the past.

Especially if the Canadian Gov't keeps minting larger coins:)

(What if you friend is on his way to the gas station? You can't expect him to follow you to McDonalds just so he can swipe his card for you.)

no, no you can't. And thats where cash will always have it's place. But then again in a few years he'll just reach into his pocket and pull out a fivey coin.

If we had an Austrillian up here in a Canadian school who had a heavy Austillian Accent we'd likely think he sounded gay.

And aslong as you think his accent is gay he's more then within the bounds of reason to think yours is aswell.

[edit]oh, and it's written "eh?"[/edit]

Well, you can carry a $5 coin if you want. I'd prefer a $5 bill. Coins weigh more, and fall out of pockets when people sit down. There are reasons why we stopped carrying silver dollars a long time ago. I don't know why people keep trying to bring back higher valued coins . . .

anyone else notice that the thread subject is a horribly misspelled antithesis? :D
