Tara's Audio Video Plugin (lets you play real audio, real video, real jukebox, mpegs, avi and a lot of other formats): http://wwwpop.hypermart.net/plugin/welcome.html

RealAudio plug-in (requires RealPlayer (G2 or higher) to be installed), by innover:

I clicked on Tara's and the link is apparently old/doesn't work. Where is it now?

And as for the second, is there anyway around using RealPlayer? It's spyware and I don't want to install it.

Thx!

all plugins make use of realplayer's dlls

i managed to get around it by just deleting realplayer.exe, you keep the codecs, but my firewall never went off and i haven't got any popups from it.

MarcosDJ 4th February 2003 22:19

Decent, i hate realplayer ;)

leenman 6th February 2003 02:48

Thanks Lion King, Seems to work fine.

Binary King, does this keep all the spyware from operating? Or does it just allow your firewall to not go off?

I hope you didn't install RealOne ???

Get v7 or at the very worst v8 here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=real (v3, 4, 5, G2, 7, 8)

Make sure you uncheck EVERYTHING during RealPlayer installation
(don't let it make itself the default player for anything)

RealPlayer files & reg entries required to play Real Formats in Winamp w/o RP

I installed G2. I also deleted the exe file for RealPlayer so nothing would pop up. Do you know if this disables all the spy stuff? I've run Spybot after the the RealPlayer install and it doesn't come up with any RealPlayer files.

The Tara plugin seems to work just ok. Sometimes a file will play, sometimes it won't (i.e. NPR radio streams)

DJ Egg 11th February 2003 21:49

The proper spyware stuff is in RP8 and RealOne (TKBell, or whatever it's called)

To disable all internal RealPlayer crap, see this thread.
Though naturally the EXE file needs to be there first
(you can then safely delete it afterwards)
The only other alternative is to follow the instructions in the link I posted above. This will get rid of 100's of needless registry entries . . . because that's where RP stores all it's settings etc.

There'll be some files you won't be able to play if the G2 engine is installed, because those codecs are too old for the newer formats.
Doesn't Tara have an option to automatically search for and download required codecs?
I wouldn't know for sure myself, because I've boycotted all RealPlayer formats.

ps. Spybot Search and Destroy rocks!
Have you checked out the new Ad-Aware 6 yet?
Both of these are awesome, and truly essential!
About 70%+ of all today's pc problems are caused by spyware/adware/trojans
(and viruses too, but that's a different matter, hehe).

leenman 12th February 2003 01:19

Do both of these alternatives accomplish the same thing? Sounds like the second might get rid of entries where as the first one only "disables"?

And do you recommend one over the other?

DJ Egg 12th February 2003 03:18

Yes, your synopsis is correct.
Option 1 disables, but leaves 100's of needless registry entries and files.
Option 2 disables completely, removes all registry entries except for the 3 required ones, and also removes all unnecessary files except for the required codecs/engine.

Personally, I recommend the 3rd option:
Boycot RealPlayer and all RealNetworks formats ;)
There's plenty of alternatives out there!
But hey, that's me . . .

leenman 12th February 2003 04:11

But I'm an NPR fan! On Window's Media, sounds terrible. Would rather just use one media player, anyway. So will probably opt for Option 2.

Thanks for the headsup on AdAware 6. I had 5. Just downloaded 6. Very nice. Found all kinds of things 5 had missed. AdAware does rock. So does DJEgg. Thanks for all your help.
