The Truth Shall Set You Free!
Which one is true?
(1)When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent several years and $10 million developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300C...The Russians used a pencil. (2)It is illegal to say the word 'pelican' in Belgium. (3)The biggest cause of death in Nepal is being shocked by geese. (4)Windmills always turn counter-clockwise. Except for the windmills in Ireland. (5)Statistically speaking, the longer the British have controlled a foreign territory, the poorer that territory has become. ...no cheating! |
The first one - NASA is always wasting money ;)
|
It's not #1 - the ballpoint pen was specifically designed to do all of that by the original designer.
I'm gonna go with 5, although it'll probably be wrong :) |
I agree with Merlin. Although I would be surprised if they only spent 10 million developing it.
|
there is a space pen, it is made by fisher. it uses a pressurized canister of ink and a ball point. the astronauts do use them n space, too. for a civvie to buy one they are around 60 bucks. i doubt that it costed 10 mil to develop. oh no a GEESE!
|
I think i'm leaning towards 5... although i'm not completely sure. They did have a tendency to tax everyone to death but at the same time their lower provinces in china did very well.... and "statistically speaking" can mean so many things...
3 cant be right- theyve had more shootings there of late then I can count... 1 seems to implausible - nasa wouldnt spend that much money on R&D for a pen they would outsource it. 2 & 4 are just dumb. But which one is dumber... 2 is my final anwser, regis.;) |
5. it has to be....us brits are hopeless at times :)
|
They're all true.
|
I think 'all of the above' are right. Im kinda sure of #1. it was more of a showoff thing. NASA used to show off in spending money rather than achieving while Russians used to achieve in lowest costs. as to 2,3,4 well they would be new info to me, but I kinda feel they might be true. the fifth is definitely the ultimate truth :D
|
The correct answer is #4, don't ask me why it just is.
Round 2: (pick the one that is true) (1)The Sears Tower in Chicago is so-called because, during its construction, a freak heatwave hit the city, heating the steel girders so much that 17 construction workers were hospitalised with severe burns to the hands and feet. (2)Over 2500 left handed people a year are killed from using products made for right handed people. (3)If you stand on the top of the Prudential Assurance Building in Bromley Kent you can see eight continents. (4)In an effort to boost library usage, British librarians have placed a five pound note in one book in every thousand. (5)If every person in the world refrained from physical contact with every other person for 24 hours, the incidence of all infectious diseases would be reduced by 39% ...remember no cheating! |

When neil armstrong was going back into the module to ascend to the ship in orbit he accidentally broke off a switch which was vitally important to lift-off. If he hadn't had the pen he wouldnt' have been able to jimmy the switch, jumpstarting the thingy. |
hey that's not fair. we want to know the answers and the why for each one. please tell me you're gonna do this at least in the end.
for this one, i guess it's the 5th. (3 looks obviously ridiculous) |

not yet. I will :D
no really the point is he cud've done it with anything. it was by pure luck that he needed this and used it. anyway 10m$ for an emergency jumpstarter, that's still much.. |
It's the first one - I read the story before......
BTW - I have yet to see a windmill here.... |
The answer this round is (2), i've heard that statistic before. and i own a space pen! they write underwater and everything!
|
The development of the NASA pen is a myth; although they did develop a special pen, the dollar amount and the time spent is unknown.
Geese are not the number one cause of deaths in Nepal- the statement is absolute absurdity, as is the pelican statement about Belguim. Britian has had many profitable colonies; one example is Hong Kong. I know for a fact that windmills move clockwise in Ireland, but it is not caused by wind or any such thing; they are merely manufactured differently. |
1-3 are obviously not true, 4 is semi-plausible, but 5 seems most likely.
|
the sears tower is named after Sears, the clothes store. they built it:rolleyes:
i doubt 2 u can't possible see northamerica and antartica at once now the brits might try something like that, but thats a whole lotta money. 5 is probably it (remember that scene in American History X  |
For round 2 i'm going to get go non-sequiter and choose 2.
|
thx Harry for the answers. this is a very informative thread. can't wait for the new answers.
|
The only correct and truthful statement in round 2 is:
(2)Over 2500 left handed people a year are killed from using products made for right handed people. round three coming soon... (1) The Sears Tower is named for the retail giant (that I coincidentally work for) (3) It is impossible to see all eight continents from any one point. (4) The British are very quirky but alas they are also cheap illiterates. :D The statement is merely a rumor. (5) As for the physical contact and diseases theory- it's exactly that, a theory; a specific percentage has never been proposed. |
I knew it was 2! Booo-yah! :) :blah:

nature spirit, your wish is my command... round 3- enjoy.
Pick the truthful answer: (1)The first blues artist is now known to have been Ludwig von Beethoven. Beethoven first played the blues at his piano in 1821, but his family and friends merely attributed the unfamiliar arrangements to his deafness. (2)A stretch of the Lower Nile about 70 miles long actually flows uphill. This is due to a combination of the centrifugal force of the Earth's rotation and the weaker magnetic field near the Equator. (3)The Twenty-Nine Years War between Lithuania and Latvia ended in 1667 with the signing of the Treaty of Arschenbach. (4)According to Pennsylvania state law; it is illegal to have over 16 women live in a house together because that constitutes a brothel. However up to 120 men can live together, without breaking the law. (5)In Singapore, the third time you are convicted of littering, you will have to clean the streets on a Sunday wearing a bib that reads "I am a litter-lout". This will then be broadcast on the local news. ...keep the game honest, no cheating! |
I pick #4 sounds like some stupid law Pennsylvania would have.
|
Ummm...how did the Sears Tower get its name from the heat? Unless they were thinking of 'searing' at the time.
I'd say for this round that the answer is 4 or 5 since Singapore have soe strict and yet stupid laws. |
I believe it is number 5; I've seen that before. I'm not 100% sure, though.
|
I know that there can be a large fine for littering in Singapore, but I dunno about the bib thing...
I'm thinking the Pennsylvania law. |
Bop, long time no see. where have you been? :)
thanks a lot for stretching the game ahead, and this round is pretty interesting.. hum.. let's see... me too, swinging between 4 and 5.. (did latvia and lithuania exist at that time?) I will go for 5 since I like its shape more.. :D Bop.. I like your new logo. |
1 is incredibly ludicrous
3 cant be- those entities didnt exist in the 1600's 5 can't be "lout" does not exist in asian languages between 2 and 4... i'll go with 4 since i chose 2 last time :) |

As far as me not being here- I've been here all along; here's a clue: Orson Welles once played a character by the name of Harry Lime in a film called The Third Man. :) |
Gee.. you got me. something inside of me told me that harry Lime avatar along with the WWII Vienna were far more cult and vintage than to be something ordinary or innocent ;)
|
*trying to stir up the silence*
|
Sorry, I forgot about this thread...
The correct and only thruthful answer to round three is: Statement (4) The law does exist but is hardly ever enforced; the others are all poppy cock! Round 4 coming soon to a thread near you! |
Why is this being brought back? ;)
|
I beg to differ on #5, Brunei gained independance in 1984 and are very prosperous due to the oil fields. Most of the commonwealth countries with self government are in a way controlled by Britain through the Governor-General. Ask Gough Whitlam, Australian Prime minister from 1972-75. He wanted an australian republic, the brits said no way and fired him. The economies of those countries are fucked because the leaders turn to old tribal wars to gain power (see: Zimbabwe, Dr Robert Mugabe) and respect for their tribes. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there is still a tight bond to the tribal groups you are born to. Mugabe has used this to effect and hence the "Zimbabwe African Nazi Uptight - poofter fraternity" (that's what ZANU-PF stands for. Zimbabwe declared a UDI in 1978 and held elections in 1980. elections have been rigged and privalleges bestowed to Mugabe's family and tribe ever since. :hang: :weird:
