Nullsoft and AOL

Why would a big conglomerate like AOL/Time-Warner want to own Nullsoft? What do they get out of it? And how much do they now influence the product (other than choosing the ads on the site)?

Xerxes 15th March 2002 08:21

They bought nullsoft at the height of the MP3 napster craze. It was a trendy thing in business to have a stake in an mp3 business. AOL bought nullsoft primarily to have a cool property.

AOL influences the product little- basically another vehicle to get "1000 hours free.exe" onto your computer.

Thanks Xerxes. It's funny, when I posted this I glanced at the top to see who was browsing the forum and thought to myself, "I'll bet Xerxes will answer this one." :D

And, yea verily, you did.

A new AOL media player(when winamp3 is released...i believe)

they don't really influence the development winamp(except for having the AOL icon included in the setup) they influenced other things that nullsoft tried to develop more.

e.g Gnutella (and various other projects)

Cut-backs to nullsoft hurt pretty bad...look what happened to Watadoo

I wish they would fuck off about the AIM/trillian thing...cos that pisses me off

i cant believe the canadians dont go after AOL for producing Winamp. Watch out canadians, u might have to pay 10 bux to DL winamp. But seriously, i cant believe AOL would condone a product that is part of the <illegal> mp3 revolution. I love winamp, with all my heart, but it just doesnt make sence.

note: we discussed this a long time ago in october. this thread got 50 replies, and in it i had a page long essay (haha) about the whole thing. check it out...

If they can capitalize on a legal part of the illegal MP3 revolution then that is perfectly OK.

Don't judge sucess by post counts- many of the most asinine threads to curse this forum have 300+ post counts.

I know dude but i felt it was unrelated and deserved its own thing. sorry sorry :) im not being intentionally disruptive.

Bilbo Baggins 15th March 2002 09:00

There is nothing at all about MP3 that is illegal.

KrunkedUp187 15th March 2002 09:25

No, MP3 is perfectly legal, but so is Morphene or DivX. Both of these, as well as MP3s are abused in a way that is not legal or ethical. i guess i dont really have a point :)

Bilbo Baggins 15th March 2002 09:26

We knew that all along :D

Also Winamp used to be distributed with Netscape Navigator, which went into the AOL company, and then thought to get Winamp too. ;)

i'd bet AOL has plans for winamp. Use it to distribute music, or somthing like that.
