directX emulation

Does anyone know if it is possible to simulate directX 6-7 on winXP? I'm making a program for my graphics programming course and I don't think it works becuse of DX8.1 on XP, I'm pretty sure it needs version 6. So is there a way to emulate this just for one program being programmed in Visual c++?

I know this is probably impossible but if there is anything it would be most amazing.

I am no DirectX expert, but I would say the answer is no. DirectX has always been designed to be backwardly compatible, removing any need for emulation in the first place.

If someone else actually knows what they are talking about feel free to correct me. :D
