Let's hear it for poor AOL

I have a friend who got a free year of AOL with his Gateway computer. A year and three months later AOL has yet to bill him for services. Not that he's complaining.

I keep seeing more and more reports of people getting free access for very extended periods. Seems a little stupid of them really. If a user is leaving the service, giving them another few months is not very likely to make them then start paying again. They will either take their two months and leave, or get even more free time.

Can someone explain that article to me? I got confused.

Before i got DSL and waay after the bust of free ISP, i was forced to give AOL a shot. Free month and all.

Then when i went to cancel, they offered me a free month to keep testing the ISP out. Then again, after the month, i called to cancel and they gave me a free month. From Janurary - Septemeber, i paid for 1 month, cause i felt they deserved 20 bucks.

They'd rather keep you on than terminate your account.

But ...

They won't always offer you the free month. They cancelled a friends account and he got upset cause id always gloat about how im getting free months.

This story applies to AOL USA. I heard it doesn't work outside of the US.
