Who Hates Pop-Up Ads As Much As I Do?

K... I am so recently SICKENED by the amount of increasing pop-up ads I could punch the computer's screen in. EVERY time I try to do something, it seems, a pop up ad will come up. I realize that getting rid of pop ups altogether is not a feasible goal, but at least making the full screen ones be smaller would be a lot better and I could tolerate it more. I think that too much advertisement on the net is a problem. Just as I was typing this, a full screen ad for 'netbroadcaster' appeared for the fifth time today. More than once I've had my stupid Windows 95 (I hate it and I think it's an obsolete piece of crap in fact on my desktop 'my computer' has been renamed obsolete piece of crap) anyway, my Windows 95 has been barraged with so many ads all at once that it froze. I'd like to start a convo to maybe start a petition or something. I have nothing against advertisements because sometimes they help you to know important products are coming out (How did you know your favourite TV show was on at 5? How did you know when the PS2 was coming out? etc.) But I just want a little less to give me some peace of mind, that's all.

The only way that many sites can afford to keep running is if they have lots of banners on their site, and popups as well. It is unfortunate, but it is a fact of life.

Vie 6th April 2002 20:32

you can get pop-up blockers, can sombody recommend one?

Fact Of Life

I realize it is a way of keeping the site up and running, but maybe they could shrink the full screen ads to a little smaller so it doesn't freeze my computer. That's all I'm saying and I hope I'm not being rude.

There is no point in using these. After all some are so good, they block the occasional popups that you need like tiny small download info windows! :p

Sandman2012 6th April 2002 21:51

Killad is pretty simple and easily configured pop-up blocker. It doesn't use nearly as much system resources as programs like WebWasher (which is also good, but I prefer killad for it's simplicity).

I have Popup Ad Filter and it works quite well. It works by detecting the scripts to load pages on page loads, so it wont block download popups.

Good Pop-Up Killers

Which are the best pop-up killers in your opinion?

Check the link to KillAd I posted above. It's a pretty straightforward pop-up blocker. It doesn't have an automatic install, just unzip the files to a folder and place a shortcut to the .exe file on your desktop. Double click the shortcut and you're good to go. The read me file that comes with it explains how to configure it. It's default setting is pretty mild, so you'll probably have to tweak it a bit to your liking.

Also, check this thread for other people's opinions: Pop-up Blockers

Winzip & Others

Killad sounds good, but you mentioned that I need to unzip the program. My computer is a win95, and when I got it it didn't have Winzip on it. Winzip costs money, and I was wondering if there's a free zipper program somewhere. There are SO many files I want to download, but I'm always stuck if they require a .zip file. Can you help me out?

randman 7th April 2002 01:46

A couple of good, free Zip programs:

ZipCentral
UltimateZip

My pop-up killer of choice is POW!. POW! is very similar to KillAd, just a little more compact.

How about a program that can just block certain sites to load, or parts of the site to not load at all (ie: Adbar). It could replace the ad with a local picture for the placement.

Popup Ad Filter rox!

:cool::up:

WebWasher will do all that, and it's free, unlike Popup Ad Filter. Webwasher acts as a proxy between your browser and the internet. It has tons of cool features, including letting you play or not play animations, it can block banner ads, and even stop java script from being executed. You could probably spend many days just configuring it. Try it out. Also, if you have IE6 there a re a lot of cusomizable features in Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced that will let you turn off animations and other things using just your browser alone.

ads feed the sites. pay or dont go there.

first you complain about the ads.
resolution: you block them

companies see the slump in advertising:
resoultiom: they ad more pop ups.

trend? maybe.

Kenny D. 7th April 2002 09:27

Didn`t realize there was so many apps. I use Pop Kill. You can select the size pop-up you want to block. It will block most of them even the ones that you need but that is no problem. If you can`t bring up a requested pop-up, just change the size or temporarily disable. Much better than being bombarded.

Pop ups are annoying.period.

apollos 7th April 2002 11:01

All of these program names are all very nice, but at the end of the day how do you know that these programs won't block occasional small windows that pop up eg. windows that comes up and says click to download. How does these popup stopper programs know which are important and which are just annoying advertisments?

It's been a while since I have suffered from pop-ups. I have disabled 'em in Opera. Works perfectly.
