The beginning of a new project

Well, here it is, do you think I should continue or I better hit shift+delete? The colours are crap, I know, I guess I'll have to use some gradients and textures...

Atmo 14th April 2002 17:32

Way too early to tell....looks like just a background pic.

dam 14th April 2002 18:33

Like atmo said far too early to tell.

skinme! 14th April 2002 19:04

I love the colours - it'd be cool if one of the stars was in the volume bar and was animated.

Jellby 14th April 2002 19:27

I guess you're right, it is too early... I'm working now on the main window components. How would you name the opposite of 'shuffle', maybe 'straight'?

Jellby 14th April 2002 20:38

This is it now...

Mr_Tough_Guy 14th April 2002 20:48

nice start, still bit early to really say anything

skinme! 14th April 2002 23:12

How big is each star? If it's small enough you could move them all down 2px and use them in vol/bal animations.

dam 15th April 2002 04:27

Skinme's idea is great.Try implementing it.

Atmo 15th April 2002 04:30

I agree too...

Jellby 15th April 2002 09:05

Yes, I like the idea
I will have to shrink the stars 1 or 2 pixels, but it should work: every star will be different, and the ones in volume and balance sliders will change colour/pattern ;)
There's something you can't see: the pressed state of the buttons is the same text in greek (or 'greekish') characters (like the EURO/EYPO in the real banknotes).
I still don't like the star circles next to 'eq' and 'pl', and I don't know what to do with the songtitle and kbps/kHz areas, and the left part is too empty (I guess I will put €'s and some letters there)...

P.S. Do you know how to make the hologram more real-looking?

Jellby 19th April 2002 20:57

I have not been able to work on it much this week, but I've 'finished' the sliders, could you test them (and the cbuttons) and say what you think? And please, tell me if 'straight' is a good word for 'shuffle off' (as you know, English is not my first language, so I'm not sure).

Well, here is the .wsz, only the main (without posbar and vis) is skinned.

Atmo 19th April 2002 21:56

I like the vol/bal sliders...very cool.

Straight seems to be the correct word to use, but it doesnt sound right for some reason.

DanG 20th April 2002 04:00

Straight just doesn't sound right. How about shuffled and stacked - as in a stacked deck of cards versus shuffled?

Jellby 20th April 2002 16:59

Hmm... I'm not sure about 'stacked', I don't like it :/ How about 'arrange' or 'sorted' (but I want to avoid confussion with the 'sort' button in the playlist)?

Anyway, I've added a posbar (with an uglier than ugly button :( ) and changed a bit the eq/pl buttons. Now I'll start working with the titlebar and its buttons.

Jellby 23rd April 2002 20:35

It is (slowly) growing

1 Attachment(s)
Well, main and eq with its winshades more or less finished. Comments and ideas are welcome :)

P.S. The main's background is supposed to be a gradient.

Nini 23rd April 2002 21:27

your skin is definitely looking much better than the real euro banknotes.. :p

Nice!:)

Atmo 23rd April 2002 21:33

I like it.

Are the eq sliders animated like the volume??

Jellby 24th April 2002 08:59

Not like the volume, because I can't make them transparent :( (I would have liked to make them partially transparent). When you press the big '€', it becomes yellow, and when you move it the numbers and €'s move too and fade at the top and bottom. There's not much more than what's seen in the screenshot.

LoL.How true.

StillWater 25th April 2002 14:31

Well, I hate the Euro symbol (I don't hate "EUrope", just the symbol). But I quite like the skin. Keep at it - looking forward to the finished product!

Then you'll hate the minibrowser. The fact is I hate the minibrowser and the playlist in general, too little space for anything, and half the space is taken by the repeating tiles... I can't do anything with them! But I managed to make something I somehow like (note the clever positioning of a little 'main' in the playlist to hold the time, cbuttons and vis  ). The inside of the mb is temporary, I've used 4 banknotes so far, there are 7, so I still have to use 3: avs, mikro and mbinner, but I don't have any 10€ note to scan now  You don't see the posbar in this screenshot, but believe me: it's really ugly

skinme! 26th April 2002 22:03

This is looking great. Perhaps we should ask the European Courts to make it the official skin :D Or would that we discriminatory against my pet rabbit?

Jellby 26th April 2002 22:42

I planned to ask the ECB for permission, because the banknotes are copyrighted and I don't want to have problems publishing the skin... I don't get your pet rabbit thing, what's its name?

_Blackdog_ 26th April 2002 22:45

dont ask for permission!!! they will tell you no for the stupidist reasons! like "someone could take a screenshot of your skin and print it out and cut it into bills. we can't have people making counterfit money from your skin." wait for them to tell you to remove it! (which will never happen)

Nini 26th April 2002 23:20

well.. tey might allow you because of your 'political engagement' ;)

LOL

or they will never answer :D

dam 27th April 2002 06:04

No harm in asking I suppose.:)

So naïve...

Re: My pet rabbit. I was merely pointing out that publishing said skin may be discriminatory against a few individuals, such as my rabbit, as declared by the European Court of Human Rights.

dimichan 27th April 2002 07:31

It's looking good there - never would have thought of something like that either!

Jellby 27th April 2002 08:18

These are the reproduction rules:

1. The copyright on the banknotes specified in Article 1 shall belong to the ECB.
2. The reproduction of all or part of a banknote specified in Article 1 shall be authorised in the
following cases:
(a) for photographs, drawings, paintings, films, and generally for any type of image in which the focus is
not the banknotes or reproductions themselves and which do not provide a close-up view of the
banknote designs;
(b) for one-sided reproductions, provided these are more than 125 % or less than 75 % of both the length
and the width of the respective banknote as specified in Article 1, irrespective of the material used for
the reproduction.
3. General authorisation of reproductions under the above rules may be cancelled in the event of a
conflict with the unalienable moral rights of the author of the banknote designs.

I think the skin qualifies for point 2 (a & b), but there's point 3...

skinme! 27th April 2002 10:10

Well I think that clears you. Is this uncommon or do many countries have such rules about bank notes?

Jellby 27th April 2002 13:00

OK, it's finished and submitted to 1001, you can see it, download it, review it and rate it at:

http://www.1001winampskins.com/skin_...l?skin_id=2394

All comments and suggestions are welcome :)

dam 27th April 2002 18:04

I have no complaints.I like the way the cursors change color for each window. The Mikroamp skin is very original. .Well done Jelby.

Jellby 27th April 2002 18:17

Thank you :)

I'm very happy with the result, although some times I didn't know what to do and just started to fill with gradients and so. But I still like GoldenRing better, it's 3 months since I first submitted it and I'm not sick of it yet :D

skinme! 27th April 2002 22:51

Freaky people on 1001 are almost as blind as your typical Winamp.com public review. They're just a touch more polite.

freaky freekadella.

Atmo 28th April 2002 07:55

I like it overall....Not really sure about the diagonal text used for the buttons in the minibrowser...Doesnt seem to fit with the rest of the skin.

Otherwise it's great.

Yes, but the buttons are too small to write the text normally, and I had to use text, pictures would fit even less. Now I think it gives a nice touch.

Thats it, "polite"! I was trying to remember that word and was going to search the dictionary :)
About the reviews, either you're right or 'The Colour of Money' is just average  The problem is people rate "how they like" the skin (and that's the question asked), and not how well it is done, I believe that the skin is technically and aesthetically 'robust', but it's not very beautiful, that's right. (but #37 in popularity is not too bad :D)

skinme! 28th April 2002 10:50

Technically it's beautiful - the way you've managed to combine several images seamlessly and take individual elements and exagreate them.

I haven't yet decided if I think it's beautiful but it's a must-have skin for me... even just to marvel at. Well done

Jellby 28th April 2002 12:00

Thank you very much :) But there's at least one bug: there is no '?' and '*' in text.bmp
