Big Problems
ok, here it is. my dorm room lost power, but my battery backup kicked in, allowing me to safely shut down the computer. the computer showed no signs of malfunctions before it went down. after the power returned, my PC refused to work in 1024x768, but will work in 800x600. i have reinstalled the drivers and windows XP, neither had any effect. when i try to switch to 1024x768, it streched the screen horozontally, so I could only see about half the screen, but the vertical height was correct. I have a GeForce2 MX200 64MB video card, WinXP, 768MB RAM. any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try XP's System Restore feature to revert your settings to before the power went out.
|
you could always get a new video card!!
;) |
tried sys. restore, no luck
|
Sounds like a driver problem to me. Unlikely to be hardware causing it...but with the power out prob its possible something was damaged...Unlikely that it'd work at all if it was that.
Download the latest Detonator drivers from Nvidia and see if that helps.. |

Or just try with another video card and see if the same problem arise......if the same problem appear, which means something in your CPU is damaged..... Just my guess. |
It'd most likely not even POST if it was damaged hardware...
|
just tried a new driver, no luck. I will try a different video card this weekend, when I can go home and get my old one.
[EDIT] just thought of something, would it be possible that the BIOS on the card got messed up? I have the files for the video card's BIOS, but I don't know how to flash them[EDIT] |
Can you re-install windows onto another drive before you mess with anything like that??
|
Just try with the Video card.........I doubt it is the BIOS that is messed up.
|
not the motherboard BIOS, the video card BIOS. anyway, I found the instructions, and I think I am going to let my dad handle that. he's been working with computers since the late 70's. in fact, he helped me build this machine. It requires me to use DOS prompts, and my dad is much better in DOS than me.
|
I wouldnt recomend messing with the cards bios until you know that its the card itself.
Try a fresh install if possible, then try another monitor (could be that causing it too), then try a different card before messing with that sort of stuff... |
Don't worry, his dad is coming to his rescue....
;) |
thanks for the help guys, but that's it for tonight. I have got to get some sleep, it's 4:30 am over here right now, and i haven't slept in something like 30 hours. My personal best is 67 hours without sleep. I wanted to stop at 60, but I could not get to sleep. Go figure.

i agree with atmo.... dont flash your vid card bios...serious problems if you dont do it right, unless your vid has dual bios.,..but not many do...
i would try flashing the mobo bios, or jsut resetting the cmos......try that..... |
Vie's garenteed computer fix:
Steap 1: First find a problem steap 2: look behind the mointor for no reason steap 3: Curse for exactly one minit straight steap 4 : hit keybord steap 5: shout at CDRom drive steap 6: walk round in a circle 3 times steap 7: kick main tower steap 8: Kick monitor steap 9: Bandage foot steap 10: take to profesional |
make sure your mobo's bios didnt get reset, the 'assign irq [i think its irq] for vga' option could have been turned off. most vid cards need irq to work properly...
|
My opinion on this is that if you are getting any video at all, then it is not damaged hardware. Just incase though, try swapping with some other video card and see if that helps. Flashing the video card's BIOS might help but if you really don't know what you are doing, call in a professional or somebody that does know what they are doing.

I figured it out. for some reason, the god-damn refresh rate was screwing up the display when the monitor was set to 1024x768. at a refresh rate of 60 Hertz, the monitor can't go to 1024x768, but at 75 hertz, it can go to 1024x768. I don't know how it got switched down to that, but it works now.
