I figured out what gave me Gator!!

It's the damn Divx player has it. Well, adaware is destroying it as I type.

kljs 15th May 2002 18:47

Gator is a pest, something really needs to be done to it............

Stupid spyware/adware/whatever...

Vie 15th May 2002 18:53

convert it so they get adverts from you:D

Atmo 15th May 2002 18:54

Umm...why not just run a firewall that makes the programs ask for permission??

Conratulations! You are now legible to kiss my ass!

Urgh! I hate when my PC starts and says that a program has requested shit from the net! Is there no way to stop it saying that!?

It saves me the option of clicking the dialup icon, but still!

:hang:

You can give programs permission to acess the net without that popup...Theres a remember selection thing you can tick so it never asks again.

I only allow programs that I want to access the net, access the net without asking. Anything bad gets blocked permanantly, and a select few that i only run once in a while i get the popup for.

Seriously, once its set up you rarely hear from it.

Running that and ad-aware is a pretty solid way of protecting yourself from spyware.

Gator is worse than syphilis. :(

http://www.divx.com
It's not the DivX player that has Gator, it's the Pro version of the DivX 5 codec. You can either get a slightly crippled free version, a free-but-Gatored Pro version, or you can buy a Gator-free Pro version from them. It's not actually a bad idea, and they do explain a way to disable the Gatored version by using the ZoneAlarm firewall to forbid it access to the net. You still have to have Gator on your system though. :(

I'm happily ripping DVDs with DivX 4, so none of the above affects me. :)

Because zone alarm is way too intrusive for my liking.

sscw46 15th May 2002 23:11

Aargh, I hate Gator. And any other stupid program that comes with stupid spyware. Thank God for AdAware.

Atmo 15th May 2002 23:11

Sure, for the first few days you'll get popups from this program and that program, until you set the permission rights up. But isnt that better than letting every program that wants to access the net??

Also, programs like ad-aware arent gonna protect against trojans etc.

In my opinion, better safe than sorry.

n_ick2000 15th May 2002 23:12

Just be glad that you're not like me and have a proxy/firewall in the way. I have to find out port numbers, tcp/udp, and direction traffic flows. Then wait until my dad has time to configure the settings. I would give anything to have a simple "Do you want this program to be able to run?" dialog whenever I run something.

I was just about to mention that we now talk about the spyware programs as if they are STDs. :)

Fairly accurate metaphor. . .

Unfortunately, getting fekked is nowhere near as fun when you get computing STDs:igor:

On the bright side, it's really tough getting crabs in your computer:p

But that might mean you get sand in your floppy!

Interestingly enuogh, the old (Latin? Greek?) name for crabs was the same as that for cancer. That's why the Astrological symbol for "the crab" is called "cancer". Krebs is the word in German for cancer and crabs. So, staring into your monitor just might get you crabs. :D (wow, way too in-depth)

only if you download the "professional" version which has all the "adware" warnings on the download page and the installer....
