What is your current read?

For all of you that are recreational readers or forced by the educational system to read:

What book are you currently reading at the time being? And do you like it? Post a link to the book on amazon even... :) Note: This is not a favorite books thread.

For all of you punks that are not currently reading anything:

Get a frikin' library card! :hang: No Excuse!

I'm currently reading "Hideyoshi" - a biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a figure in Japanese feudal history who did a lot to create the federal system of Japan, (not to mention unifying the feudal provinces) ... as a thrilling epic of diplomacy and war, its most enjoyable.

since i am away from my huge bookshelf at home, I am not reading anything right now. I think I will be diving into some long tom clancy novels when I get back home.

Merlin 20th May 2002 10:44

A factual book called "In Search of England", by Michael Wood. He's exploring the lesser known parts of English history, and discusses the Saxon period, and the concepts of Britain and England. I've only read a few pages so far, but it is already interesting.

The Sunday Times called it "Provoking and thoroughly satisfying"; so I bought it. If the Times gives a book a good review, that's enough reason for me.

I am reading "The Art of Assembly", on 80x86 processors Assembly language. Various authors.

fwgx 20th May 2002 10:49

I'm reading thought as a system by David Bohm about how the mind is not all we think it is and how we might learn to get around it's limitations and reflex conditioning. It's a transcript of a weekend of seminars he conducted in 1990 (I think)

I also started reading Manufacturing Concent by Noam Chomsky but I haven't read it in a while because I have too much work on and it is pretty heavy reading. It's about the mass media and how they work together with governments to report on things in a way that the Government wants So it can go about it's dirty deeds with public concent.

patroclus22 20th May 2002 12:31

I'm reading a Dutch book by a famous Dutch TV-guy (sports presenter), which is pretty cool.

since English isn't my mothertongue and the book is several inches-thick, is quite a hard read though.

n_ick2000 20th May 2002 21:48

Well, I really don't enjoy reading, but in my spare time, I look at C++ for dummies. :) I would be reading a bit more complex C++ manuel, but I am just starting to learn C++ (switching from basic). I suppose that doesn't count as a book, but oh well.

GoldenSphynx 20th May 2002 21:49

I need to get a library card here, but I don't know the german phrase for "check out a book". I've been planning on trying to get a card today, though. I need to check out a few (English) CS books.

I'm also reading The C++ Programming Language by Bjarne Stroustrup and I just finished reading several SF books, including Lord of Light by Roger Zelazney.

Xerxes 21st May 2002 08:27

Dont you have one of those little pocket translator electronic doo-hickeys? The Japanese exchange students at my college all carry them.

Curi0us_George 21st May 2002 09:38

Yeah, but "check out" isn't listed. I suppose I could just say "borrow".

I plan to go to the library whenever I finish filing my Internet need for the day.

i've been reading it off and on for about a year and a half now, and it's amazing
someday this summer i'm going to start over and read it all the way through w/in a reasonable amount of time

dam 22nd May 2002 19:30

I'm reading "A second helping of Chick Soup for the soul".

Inspirational reading.

Curi0us_George 22nd May 2002 19:42

You have to read that book at least twice to catch everything.

Zelazney was brilliant. He loved Philip K. Dick's works, and the ones I've read were great, I'll agree, but Zelazney way overshadows Dick.

A lot of his out-of-print books (along with those of several other SF authors, including Dick and Alfred Bester) are being reprinted again. I recently bought a several of them.

Sandman2012 22nd May 2002 19:48

I just finished Confessions Of A Crap Artist by Phillip K. Dick. Not really Sci-Fi but it was great.
