SuSE Linux... 6 GB... x 1,000
Jissus... I've used 3.11, 95, 98se, 2k, and XP. order of my liking: 98se XP 2k (NOT compatable with my computer) 95 3.11 |
I have never used 2k, but is it true that you get total control as an admin to block certin files, folders and programs? Even limitate the time that users can use the computer?
|
As an admin, you can set/remove shares (files/folders/drives/devices which are accessible/readable/writable/visible to various user groups and individual users) and fiddle with disk quotas. I don't know about time limits though... I'm sure there is software available to deal with that.

I am seriously considering trading in my xp for 2k.

I had 2000 for over 6 months once and NEVER crashed. Even now i downgraded from XP (XP gave me loads of problems and crashed all the time, at one point, once every 5 minutes) with service pack 3 of windows 2000 it is just as good as XP and i think its better as xp gave up some of its stability for compatibilty! I can honestly say that with all the different shit ive installed, with sp3 i have had no hardware clashes and everyhting is compatible. God bless the inventors of 2000. I promise never to bitch about Microsoft again :) |

By the way, who set up your computer for xp, who installed it and who made it unstable?? 90% of the time system instability can be summed up in two words: User error. Now im not saying thats the case here, but was your copy of xp a legal copy, properly activated, running certified drivers for your 'compatible' hardware etc?? Did you check that there were no hardware conflicts, did you use the update software, did you try to sort out what was making it unstable?? Did you try to re-install?? Unless you can answer a definate yes to ALL those questions, please dont bitch about it being unstable. I cant see how going from a new os with 32bit kernel to an older os with 32bit kernel would solve anything unless your install was completley fudged somehow or your hardware wasnt on the hcl... |
Windows XP is just as stable as Windows 2000. Furthermore, the software incorporated into XP is crap, imho.

In response to those who dismiss the look of WinXP as merely a childish feature for newbies, I call to your attention that Luna represents much more.
XP (with a minor third party app) can be completely skinned, easily and comprehensively. If you don't like Luna, head over to a site like ThemeXP or Neowin.net and see all the amazing GUI skins that are being created constantly. I'm using Binary's Watercolor port on my rig and I swear by its smooth, elegant, and modern design. |
Combining Windowsblinds v3 and an alternative shells such as Litestep, the same thing can be done on Windows 2000 without the need to A) change the operating system and B) upgrade your computer so it can effectively run XP. Besides, there is huge user support for LS and WB. Thousands of artists have been developing quality themes for these programs for years.
