France *snigger*

No, this isn't a france bashing thread - yet - but it is a simple little tale of valour on the part of many smaller nations as they crush the arrogant French in the game of Football. This has made my day :)

am i the only person in the UK who likes france? I don't care about football, it is, to be frank, boring (but it's good to see them beaten)

No, I like France, the people, the culture, the history. Some of my happiest memories of the last ten years have taken place in Paris.

I like 'em so much, I married one and divorced one as well

To bad they lost, nah not really, seeeeee yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah:

ElChevelle 11th June 2002 11:26

I also don't see people problem with France or french people. Sad for France to go out early. Don't tell me you'd rather have Argentina or Italy win..

The only joke here is that while the champions go out, some nobody team make it to round two and may even meet England there.

Well, Vince has already been made all too aware in #******* about his teams shortcomings in the world cup :)

And he dares to take the piss out of the Irish team? At least we managed to get out of our group - France gets knocked out in the first round....aah.. how history repeats itself... :p :D ;)

Twilightseer 11th June 2002 13:00

I absolutely want to dissociate myself from the majority of French people who worship football players who earn in one month what "normal" people would earn in several lives of salary.
Actually, i'm happy: now that France is out, this world cup thing is going to fizzle out like a flat tire. I'm pretty sure that by tonight, the number of commercials showing French players will have dwindled dramatically, the papers will at last start talking about something else and the arrogant French team will keep a low profile for a while.
The major loser here is nationalism. :)

. - .... .- -. .... 11th June 2002 13:03

Ah... notice how he disassociates himself from the team after they lose... ;)

As for the ads on TV, I wouldn't hold your breath. they're still showing ads with Roy Keane here.....

"Win two tickets to see Roy Keane at the World Cup!!!" - now that I'd like to see... ;)

. - .... .- -. .... 11th June 2002 13:11

This wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that they lost, by any chance????

See, now I know your Brits make up words as you go along... it's "snicker".

Bilbo Baggins 11th June 2002 16:20

Maybe in whatever backwards land you come from it is ;)

We have always used snigger, and organised, and colour.

:)

Trigear 11th June 2002 16:26

YOU did, but your neighbor three miles down the road in the Shire used far different spellings. all was confusing until mr. webster went and standardized everything, and that's when we got american spellings :P so to sum it up, "we're better, nyaah nyaah, up yer nose wit a rubber hose!"

(yeah, i'm joking... notice the bad spellings and immature behavior...)

Looks like the word has been around for quite a while now - 1823 according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

snigger, n

An act of sniggering; a slight or half-suppressed laugh; a snicker.

1823 BEE Dict. Turf 162 Snigger, ill-suppressed laughter. 1830 Examiner 677/2 He appeared to have a constant snigger lurking under his frown. 1855 J. H. NEWMAN Callista (1890) 64 Juba..indulged himself from time to time in an inward laugh or snigger. 1882 ‘F. ANSTEY’ Vice Versa vi. 127 Suspecting that the faint sniggers he heard were indulged in at his own expense.

fig. 1865 CARLYLE Fredk. Gt. XX. v. (1872) IX. 77 Ages..which have lost their mirth, and become all one snigger of mock-mirth.

And I agree with Bilbo - I'm writing a thesis at the moment, and if my computer tells me one more time to spell something with ***ized (do you realise how many engineering words end with ised?), it's going out the window....

[edit] triGEAR - it's "neighbour", and "standardised"..... :) [/edit]

Ok, a truce. I propose we relabel your brand of English (God, I cringe at even dignifying that butchery of letters by calling it English) to Japanese v2.0

Sounds fair?

Trigear 11th June 2002 16:50

japanese 2.0 is still in beta testing, right?

rm' 11th June 2002 16:55

Japanese v2.0, aka Engrish, is in constant development. It is an evolutionary product.

Trigear 11th June 2002 17:05

i see. can i get in on the testing process?

Of course, once the language has finished development, you will all be using it. It will slowly manifest itself into your every day language.

All your tongue are belong to English.
