s0nar

need a bit of help, this is my all-new, 17 layers, photoshop, no-mouse skin (i acquired myself a graphics tablet+stylus) (ooooh). But I am not sure whether to have the lighting or not. Should i tone it down? should i keep it? should i do it another way (at the moment, it's just a glow) should there be less of it?

The red is/will be transparency.

with glow/light effect

and without

[edit]changed them into links...pictars didn't work

If you don't like the idea, please say, i won't hold it against you.

deathazre 11th June 2002 17:38

Looks better with the light, but you need to tweak it a bit, maybe have 2...

MetallichicA 11th June 2002 17:50

With the light, but darken yer cbuttons a bit more, they look washed out. :)

StillWater 11th June 2002 18:12

I do like the idea. I think with some refinement it will look very good. I say keep the light but darken it

dam 11th June 2002 18:20

Looks better with the light bh.

Theres another way to do what you tried to do.
Instead of using lighting effcts that is.

Atmo 11th June 2002 18:31

Definately better with the light.

not in santiago 11th June 2002 18:50

Keep the light, but focus it a bit more, or use a beam that's more narrow. :)

binary hero 11th June 2002 19:14

meh! (with some radreameriffic help)

dam 11th June 2002 19:23

Much better bh.
So you gonna try puttin some metal on it?
I know you hate metal but ...

J. Burnaway 11th June 2002 19:30

The one with light is better - but like a lot of others said, maybe it is a bit too light.
Does the lower left part have some significance? It looks a page about to be turned.

Neko 11th June 2002 19:48

-nudge nudge- bh, i think you posted the wrong pic ;)

binary hero 11th June 2002 19:52

Definitely keep the light, although i'm not sure about your last version and the red frame.

how is it? worth buying it? i was toying with the idea of buying one for a while...

binary hero 11th June 2002 21:03

um, nini, the red is transparent...

but the graphics tablet is amazing. It is more than just an excuse to get RSI in another place, I find it easier to use than a mouse, it is really accurate, it's just the right-click and double click button, when i try to press it (it's on a sort of rocker thing, the lower one is right click, the upper one is doubleckick), the pen starts shaking. I got a Wacom Graphire 2 (same as raydream), and at the moment, i think it's easier, but it's my first skin in photoshop, so it could be that. I am tired now though, i'll probably be able to give you a more comprhensible review in the morning...i'm not even sure if i prefer it to a mouse yet...goodnight all.

LOL! :D sorry...

thanks for the review.. (i have always found it hard to draw with the mouse)

There's even a retailer that sells these things here in their database! :D

caz 11th June 2002 22:16

hey BH where did you get that from? how mcuh was it? lol - I need to get me one of those :D then you'd all best watch out :p  lol

PeaceMaker 12th June 2002 01:15

thats pretty good. one thing that would look good is push the light from the left across the top of the posbar to form a hump [:)] area and curve it up on the far right [after the hump] to match the bottom left. do u dig?

binary hero 12th June 2002 09:35

about time for a more coherent review. It is many many times better than a ball mouse (I'm at college now...and it sucks). You get so much more control, you don't have to push the mouse along, it does what you want it to do. It took me a couple of hours to get used to it, but by 10pm last night i was starting to be able to do things as fluently as i could with a mouse. I can easily see how a lower quality model would be harder to use, the one i have (the wacom graphire 2, as i said before) is precise. It connects through 1 usb connector, and that's the only cable (both the mouse and stylus are wireless and they don't need batteries). The actual pad actually looks quite nice too (the same can not be said for the stylus and mouse...i'll get some pics soon, the ones on the website aren't 100% correct).

The "Graphire 2 Pen and Mouse USB" cost me £75, thios is $110.(US dollars) and 116.53 Euros.

I got mine from Micro Anvika Ltd (Dabs.com had one, but they don't accept my debit card). There is a full list of links to suppliers on wacom's website. www.wacom.com

Anyway, back to the skin, peacemaker, ithink i understand, i'll have a go tonight.

Atmo 12th June 2002 09:39

Well now i've heard a review from someone i know, im gonna get one asap. That was the exact model i was thinking about too... :)

Xerxes 12th June 2002 10:01

I'll tell you what though, one of those cintiq writablemonitors would be SO very nice...

hey x, do you have a graphics tablet or are you still using a mouse (pah), btw, can you check your PM's please

i wouldn't mind one of those either...bet they cost a bomb and a half. Anyway, this thread is about my skin, not graphics tablets.

simon snowflake 12th June 2002 10:56

is it this one?
http://www.sunrisepro.com/shop/media/_graphire2.gif

Its 109,00 Euro in Amsterdam :D

binary hero 12th June 2002 11:04

yep, that's the bugger.

binary hero 12th June 2002 11:10

freaking doubleposts

simon snowflake 12th June 2002 11:26

still I think it's a lot of money, is it really worth it?
Cause I'm thinking of buying on for auite some time, but I don't want it to be a waste of money.

STILL using a mouse... jeez you make it sound so old fashioned. I'm considering saving my clams to get the 15 inch version of that writable monitor though... maybe. For such an expensive purchase I would have to see it in person first though.

Oh and...PM's checked.

Mr Jones 12th June 2002 13:23

There is nothing at all new and modern about drawing pads and pens that you write on screen with...

I was using this kind of stuff back in 1982 on my Sinclair Spectrum home computer...

Drawing tablet..

Lightpen that allowed you to draw directly onto your TV screen...

You young 'uns today think you invented technology :D

Mice (mouses) really are outdated :) Why don't you go for just a 'normal' graphics tablet (like 1/2 of this forum will be getting)?

anyway, back on topic, i have finished the main. Peacemaker, i tried fooling around with the light, trying to make it like what you said, there are a couple of changes, but it doesn't look like what you said...you probably won't even be able to notice the differences :(

MUAHAHA
a graphics tablet is just a piece of plastic you write on with a special pen, a writable monitor is where you use the stylus on the monitor, you can see what is underneath the pen...a tablet has no means of display (does that make sense?)

Hah! I love it how mice happen to become obselete the day your tablet is delivered! :p

My work involves mostly geometric lines and shapes, and when I am freeform it's usually at the micro level where the pixels are half an inch on your screen- case in point, the hundreds of hierogyphs in Luxors 1 and 2. Or the baroque gold leaf in my next W2 (Oops did I just say something? ;) )

Thus... the tablet thing isn't neccesary ... at this juncture anyway. :)

Mr Jones 12th June 2002 14:56

/swerve...

Speaking of skins and xerxes in the same breath, did you know you have 3 skins named in your honour?

it's the day after thankyouverymuch. the day i got it i thought it was a total waste of money, as i couldn't control it at all. Anyway, you failed to have noticed that THE SKIN THE THREAD IS ABOUT is actually made up of straight lines and circles. The only curve was actually done by selection, and the lighting i have added was by stylus...it just feels better to use.

And wouldn't you know it, they're all crappy metal skins. What could be more fitting? ;)

I guess "Xerxes" is the name of a giant computer from some popular video game... (I forget the name) lots of people know the name from the game... when I tell them that I never played the game usually I get "So... what did you just make that up then?" :igor:

BH: Well if it feels sexier, then use it by all means ;)

that 'game' is system shock 2, my favourite game ever (strange, eh). The name applies to a computer that also happens to go mad (coincidence, i think not), very much like 2001, a great film. wow. xerxes must mean fantastic or something.

Mr Jones 12th June 2002 16:02

I'm thinking Xman is more likely getting his name from Xerxes the king of persia , somewhere around AD 480 I think......

ROFL, too true, too true.

Xerxes 12th June 2002 16:57

Open a book... you'll learn more. http://www.herodotuswebsite.co.uk/xerxes.htm

The real reason behind my name is that its the name of a George Frederic Handel symphony I particularly enjoy.

History knows him as an incredibly inept general who lost repeatedly to the greeks, who should have been an easy conquest due to their constant infighting... and the fact that Xerxes outnumbered their army 3 to 1 ... what a dolt. But like all Persian Kings, he constantly demanded to be surrounded in the most luxurious of settings. So that works too.

And yeah he's a mad computer from some game (I already forgot the name again:p)
