Cd's

what type of cd buyer r u ?

Bilbo Baggins 15th June 2002 17:22

I buy CDs when it is an artist i really want to support, but mostly I download.

papadoc 15th June 2002 17:34

In the last year I bought 3 newly released CD's:

"Deep Down and Dirty" by Stereo MC'S.
"Live" by JJ Cale.
"Lord of the Rings Soundtrack"

I briefly listened to them at the store,
and bought them because I got my money's worth.

Other than that, my CD collection has grown in only 2 other ways.
Transferred from my old records to CD,
Or from live sets I've gotten from others around the world,
that can't be found in any record store.

fwgx 15th June 2002 17:46

I like having CD's so I buy when I'm feeling flush or I know I'm going to love it.

I'm pretty much the same. I rarely borrow cd's now, but I will still do so in order to rip the songs. Download is my way of life.

Vie 15th June 2002 18:45

I just Vidio them off TV then listen to them upstairs on the comp I mix my own (or borrow then MP3'em) I carnt afford to spend cash on CD's

GoldenSphynx 15th June 2002 19:10

Lets just say I chose number three........;)

Same here. So far I only have 13 CDs, w/a couple from each of my favorite bands, but it is growing relatively fast.

psycho_maniac 15th June 2002 21:23

i have 61 cds and only 1 is burned and i paid lots of money for just the burned one 10$

apollos 15th June 2002 21:33

Well I used to buy CD's all the time until I came across a lovely program called Napster :D

Now I use KaZaA, Audiogalaxy and iMesh and make CD's of my own.

I just see no point in being robbed £4 ($5.91) on a single which has like 3 songs on it!

:)

eleet-2k2 15th June 2002 21:39

With the advent of the internet, I'm buying cd's quite rapidly. ;)

deadrabbit 16th June 2002 02:57

i don't buy anymore, because a year ago, my cat knocked some water on my cd player, and killed it, i got another, and the little fricker did the same thing again, so i've never bothered to buy another. my computer's not in my room, and i'm more likely to be there, so it's mp3's for me. occaisionlly i'll buy a cd if it's a poor starving artist . . . but dead people and rich musicians can forget it

Daemoniac 16th June 2002 04:10

heh... i used to buy lots of cds... but then i discovered the radio, cause im too lazy to go to the store, or get songs from other people

rm' 16th June 2002 04:28

I don't have this problem of buying a CD, finding two or three songs I like, and the other 15 being junk. I know what I like, so I buy what I like. The musicians I like tend to be consistent; if I buy an album from them, I know that my chances of liking every song are very high.

So, to answer the original question, I buy practically all my music. My mp3 collection speaks for itself... I only own 10. Occasionally, I will download a couple songs to get the feel of an artist, or explore new genres. If I don't like the music, I won't buy an album. Sometimes though, it's necessary for me to download songs, because certain musicians are exceedingly hard to find in mainstream record stores (I live in Suburbia, so I'm pretty much limited to HMV and Musicworld). For example, I've yet to find a single bossa nova (Rainer Truby Trio, in particular) cd in a 150km radius. So, I've had to rely on filesharing.

insomniac 16th June 2002 10:37

Even though I have over 200 CDs in my collection that are bought, I am still a leech. I have over 3200 songs on my computer, either ripped or downloaded. Do I share? No. I pay for DSL, and I`m not going to let anyone else take a piece of it.

You mostly support the record companies by buying cd's. You should download the cd and mail the artist some money :)

c2R 16th June 2002 10:46

I buy vinyl, of artists I like and listen to alot (well, the vinyl does need to be available first)

I also download the same tracks for general playing, and listening to in the car or whatever.

When I'm online I do share a large amount of my mp3 collection (mainly the rare tracks that can't be got from a million other sources), but I disconnect leaches that don't have anything to share back.

Bilbo Baggins 16th June 2002 10:47

But i don't know where Bjork live :D

Atmo 16th June 2002 10:55

If i like maybe one or two songs from an album but dont like the rest i'll download. If its an album i know i'll like i'll buy it. Sometimes i'll download 2 or 3 songs off an album that i like then decide to buy it.

However, i rarely listen to cd's i buy. I buy it, bring it home, rip it to mp3 for listening to when im online. I also make a second copy to take with me for when im driving. That way the original stays in perfect condition and is the reason i dont like copy protection.

binary hero 16th June 2002 17:36

i buy some, but borrow the others :D, i only download the odd single, usually before i buy the album.

psycho_maniac 16th June 2002 21:31

if u like the artist u should like the whole cd i mostly like every song on every cd but u gotta admit that there is always 1 song that is bad not all the time but sometimes :winamp:

Scar Da Kookee 16th June 2002 22:14

im a whatever

Bop 16th June 2002 23:08

I use mp3's to sample music, if I like what I hear I buy the cd and delete the files. I buy becuase I like the cd itself; the packaging, artwork, liner notes, etc. as well as the quality. I have never ripped a cd and I really have no intention of doing so. I am a good example of a person who has actually increased his cd buying behavior with the advent of downloadable music. In the past if I had heard of a particular artist- I would hesitate in buying the cd, but now that I know I can usually get a preview of each song, it moves me to purchase more speedily.

*statements mentioned above are truthful to the best of my knowledge and only indicate behavior subsequent to the demise of napster.
:D

Adil 17th June 2002 10:56

I'm 100% mp3, home, portable, car, work.. all mp3
I burn audio cd's only for my gf.
and of course, I print the cd covers too :)

Curi0us_George 17th June 2002 11:34

I buy CDs because I want the whole package, not just the disk. I believe in supporting the artists, as well. (though I wish that the artists got a little bit bigger cut in the deal)

I never burns CDs from MP3s because I think it's a waste of time. Most MP3s you can download are poor quality.

I do know a guy who buys CDs, and then burns a copy and only plays the copy. Keeps the originals scrath free.

zootm 17th June 2002 13:12

i mainly buy CDs- i only copy them when i want the album and either a) don't have the money or b) live with the person who owns it...

Trigear 17th June 2002 13:39

i've been burning cds mostly, for the past two years (since i got to college), but lately i'm starting to realize that there's a significant loss of quality when you burn from mp3 (i always knew this, but i never actually heard the difference till now)...

methinks i need to buy some cds...

zootm 17th June 2002 13:41

or start using ogg vorbis :D

Trigear 17th June 2002 13:42

tell me more about this ogg vorbis, earthling.

Adil 17th June 2002 16:29

I don't think there's any earthling in this forum mister.. are you lost or somethin?

triGEAR, you're exagerating, if you burn from well coded mp3's it's very hard (almost impossible for extraearthlings :D) to hear the difference with the original CD.

Not true. Most people still rip their MP3s at 128, a rate at which the distortion is quite audible to many people. Until 256, MP3s are not CD quality. Perhaps with VBR, but I'm not going there because there are too many factors.

vizo 17th June 2002 17:59

i don't borrow, i get them myself. no outside help required.

i HATE burned cds. the only burned CDs i have in my collection are ones with various artists, CDs that are not in stores yet or CDs that are no longer avaliable. if the album is good enough for me to burn, then it is good enough for me to buy.

Nofx Guy 18th June 2002 05:12

i download music to discover new aritists..if i like the artist and i want to support them i buy the cd...expecially if there punk bands cus there cd's are already cheap enough, no major record labels there...

the way i look at it..if the artist is doing a good job and i really enjoy there music..i might aswell slap some cash down for there cd to atleast give them a little bit of profit from it..that way i dont feel as bad and also they know that there music is reaching an audience...
