O or Y ?

Is it Jello or Jelly?

I say Jello!!!

Atmo 26th June 2002 16:45

Jelly...

SSJ4 Gogitta 26th June 2002 16:51

depends on what substance you're talking about. we have both jelly and jell-o here in the US.

MetallichicA 26th June 2002 16:54

It's either Jello, or Kraft doesn't know how to spell their own trademarked product the right way:
http://www.kraftfoods.com/jello/home.jhtml

And Smucker's doesn't know that they're selling jello:

The truth is out there.... and it is J-E-L-L-O!

MetallichicA 26th June 2002 17:06

Yes, and apparently nobody looked at those links for the TRUTH!

It just doens't have the same ring does it:
"There's always room for J-E-L-L-Y"
Somebody better let Bill Cosby know he's been promoting the wrong product.

I still want to know what you people call the stuff you put on your bread. Jam, jelly, preserves. So what is OUR jelly in England, then? Do you just use jam, preserves, and marmalade? Cuz none of those are our jelly (jelly in the US is a fruit spread with no seeds and no fruit parts, just the juice and pectin or whatever that jelling stuff is).

haha I called them "you people"

/me hugs all her European friends :D

Is that the peanut butter jelly time banana singing?? LMAO if it is, i dont want to wait for it to load, i think i have it saved somewhere.:p

SSJ4 Gogitta 26th June 2002 17:25

<rant>
I hate arguements like this. its so fucking stupid.

in AMERICA, fruit spreads are either: JELLY, jams, or preserves.

in AMERICA, gelletan fruit DESERT is JELL-O

AMERICANS do not eat JELLY as desert, we eat it for BREAKFAST and on BREADS.

AMERICANS eat JELL-O for DESERT, NOT on bread or for breakfast.

Jell-O: used for gelatin dessert often given the flavor and color of any of various fruits.

Jelly: a semitransparent easily melted food preparation having a soft somewhat elastic consistency due to the presence of gelatin, pectin, or a similar substance

AMERICANs do NOT eat Jell-O Doughnuts, we have JELLY doughnuts
JELL-O is not sticky, JELLY is.

I dont care WHO "made" our language, and i dont care what British people call their Jell-O and Jelly.

If i hear somene ask me if i want jelly, it better damn well be morning and breakfast time.

if i hear someone ask if i want Jell-O, it better be dinner/lunch and time for desert.

</rant>

MetallichicA 26th June 2002 18:42

Jello is Jello no matter where you go, because it's a BRAND NAME. It's like Band-Aid. Which is probably not a British term either ;)

Us darn Americans stole the British language and MURDERED it! Or perhaps improved on it, depending on your point of view.

fwgx 26th June 2002 18:52

Jelly is what you have at kids parties with icecream.
Jam you have on toast
Jello is, well I dunno what it is, but I don't think I trust it.

Vie 26th June 2002 18:59

Jello always makes he think of hair gel

patroclus22 26th June 2002 19:02

This is turning into another color/colour argument.

spookz 26th June 2002 19:36

can brand names can crossover and become regular words?

"hoover the damn room or no supper for you young man"

It happens all the time. People constantly refer to "Q-tips" and "Band-Aids" (as Metallichica pointed out) which are trademarked names, not the actual item. People here used to call refrigerators "Frigidaires" because it was the dominant company at the time.

KY Jello?

fwgx 26th June 2002 20:34

Sellotape is another example, hence 'sticky back plastic' on Blue Peter all the time.

Sellotape is good because it's the one sticky back plastic you can easily tear just with your fingers.

fish 26th June 2002 20:57

Jello is the brand name, Jelly is the fruit preserve.

duh :p
