Do you want to enter a new skin competition?

Hmmm, just tossing up an idea in my head.

Skin competitions are fun, and they seem to produce great skins. So who would be up for another one? I ask, because:

I love The Orb. And I love their album cover art. And I'd love to have a cool ORB skin, but just can't see myself making a good one. So I thought maybe I'd make a competition out of it. There would be a prize (though, financially speaking, not quite as lucrative as yaXay :( It's not my fault, it's the Australian dollar's fault...that and I'm poor :D). It could be some money, or perhaps someone has an idea for a more original prize?

Maybe, I'd vote for the winner, maybe skinlove members would. Don't know yet (doesn't really matter that much to me who'd win, as long as they deserve it - 'cos no matter who'd win, I'd get lots of ORB skins :) )

But first I want to see if people are interested, because I'll only do this if a decent number of skinners show interest.
I've attached a few samples of their cover art. You can check out The official ORB website - there are shitloads of images there - as well as in many other websites scattered around.

So, who's interested?

The Orb are a band. Their music (which is electronic) is probably best described as, umm, ambient/dub/abstract/something like that :)

There are heaps of pictures here (thumbnails)

//edit - hmm, that picture was a bit big.

BlueBalls 3rd July 2002 19:08

just a little ;)

i love the Orb's early stuff. i saw them play live in 1991 and they had a big influence on me in my formative years. (yes i was a roll-me-another-fat-one space cadet). i was well into to whole ambient house thing (ever heard the klf's "chillout" LP?, oh, nevermind).

i didn't lke Orblivion so much and i haven't really heard their newer stuff since Thrash left.

some of the cover designs were superb - i'm sure a cool skin could be made.
i'll have a look through my old tapes/videos/cds to see if i'm inspired. until then i'll settle for a new avatar.

Mr Jones 3rd July 2002 22:09

Ripe, are you sure your not a long lost seperated relative of mine :D

I have your avatar on a t-shirt from way way back, yes, another orb fan here, saw them gig locally a few years back, and a number of times when I lived over in Manchester, they went off the boil a bit, but they still hold happy memories, was playing the perpetual dawn single and the UForb album ,only the other day, in fact, I'm wearing my USOrb tour t-shirt right now LOL,

The Prize

Ok. Remember, this competition is not yet official - I'm still waiting for more skinners to show interest - although so far so good.

I've come up with an idea for a prize. Sorry, but it's not money :(. Since most people here are from America or Western Europe, and the Australian dollar is very weak at the moment, I'd have to fork out a fortune to make it worthwhile for you. So, I've come up with an idea for a more unique and original prize. I hope people like this idea  :

I'm a filmmaker - specifically, a music-video maker. If you win, tell me what your favourite song is. Tell me why you like it, how it makes you feel, what it makes you think of, etc. I'll get my hands on the song, and make a music video for it - specifically for you. Sound ok? sound crap? please tell me what you think....

J_Bloggs 4th July 2002 08:16

I might have a go, depends on whether I have the time.

simon snowflake 4th July 2002 09:04

dbleja, you have some work somewhere on-line?

And sure I am in, but when does the contest start and before when do we have to have the skin submitted? (bussy times are ahead)

and I like orb, a friend of mine had some 12"s (I coped them....on tape, CD-R where expencive back then) but I liked Sequential more :D

:( Sorry, not yet, and not for a while. The films are pretty big. A 4 minute film - uncompressed, is about 1GB (!) Even when very compressed, they are quite big. I'd supply the winner with the film in whichever format(s) they wanted: VHS (PAL/NTSC/SECAM), CD-R, or DV-tape.

So let me briefly describe my films:

-the key element of my style is music-to-visuals synchronisation. I try to represent as much of the music as I can visually - so that when something changes in the music, it also changes in the visuals. My musical imagination works very much through imagery, and my visual imagination is very much steered by music.

-Let me say this straight out: Although I would try my best, I would not make such a good film for music which I would call fairly unimaginative, such as Britney Spears or MatchBox 20, for example. It helps if the song I'm doing is atmospheric, or moody, or imaginative, or intense, or contemplative, or ethereal. But anyway, in most cases, if it's a song you really love, it's bound to have one or more of these qualities. :)

-It doesn't really matter what genre of music it is - as long as it is a worthy specimen of that genre. I've made clips/scenes to Ambient, HipHop, Metal, 'New Age', Rock, Industrial, 'drill & bass'.....

-Either way, whatever song the winner chooses, I'll do my best to make a good film :)

To be announced soon :) I'm thinking that I might make the deadline about two months from now? how does that sound?

simon snowflake 4th July 2002 11:22

sounds kewl, prepare to make a 8 minutes during clip :D

[edit]so you can prepare -> ear parcel by lamb lol [/edit]

Atmo 4th July 2002 11:57

Hmm...I'd like to see a video clip made for NOFX - We threw gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows (yes its actually the title for a song). But that one might be a bit difficult....

Wildrose-Wally 4th July 2002 12:12

Ah, that's great. Could you do a video for "Ouverture solennelle '1812,' Op. 49"? It's only about 15 minutes long. :D

Mr Jones 4th July 2002 12:38

If I win, in keeping with the subject of the comp, I'd like you to make my video for the song, "The Blue Room", by The Orb, the whole 39 minutes 59 seconds please :D

simon snowflake 4th July 2002 12:49

on cd no compression please

No problem. Are you familiar with Andy Warhol's films? He did one which was a single, stationary shot of the Empire State building and went for about 2.5 hours. Another one of a couple sleeping at night which went for about 8 hours. These films were hailed as some of the most important in Cinema history ( :igor: ), so if you win, you'll be in for a treat. There are some public toilets with bright blue junkie-proof lights near me - I'll take the camera there, a fold-out chair, a book, and a stop-watch - and lo-and-behold... a masterpiece for Mr. Jones :D

StillWater 4th July 2002 14:09

The contest has now officially begun. To make things tidier, a new thread has been started here

ripe 4th July 2002 14:10

hmm, Blue Room eh?
how about 'Huge Evergrowing Brain...'? i'd imagine there's plenty of atmospheric, moody, imaginative, intense, contemplative, and ethereal moments in that.
or i could just watch 'Orb - Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld: Patterns & Textures' video instead...

seriously though, that's a grand prize you're suggesting

simon snowflake 4th July 2002 14:15

do you record the smell aswell ? lol

StillWater 4th July 2002 14:59

By the way, Jones, I hope that means you'll be entering the contest :)
(I won't point the camera inside the bowl if you don't want - though I'm sure there are plenty who would consider that art) :D
