The ORB skin contest

1 Attachment(s)
Ok. It's Official! The ORB skin contest.

THE RULES
Make a skin based on the band The Orb, who have some great album cover art. Some helpful links below.
-The skin must have a properly functioning EQ. The rest is up to you.

THE DEADLINE
31st of August. I will be flexible with this date, but only if absolutely neccesary.

THE PRIZE
I'm a filmmaker - specifically, a music-video maker. If you win, tell me what your favourite song is. Tell me why you like it, how it makes you feel, what it makes you think of, etc. I'll get my hands on the song, and make a music video for it - specifically for you! The only restriction here is that the song should be 7 minutes or less ;) , though that can be discussed later.

HOW THE WINNER WILL BE DECIDED
I will have a fairly big say in who wins, but by no means an exclusive one. It will be decided like this:

Skinners and Skin-Love members will vote by sending me a PM or an email. I will vote once too, but my vote will count as 3 votes :p. I will then publish a list of the skins showing how many votes each one received. I will also publish a list of the names of those who voted (but I won't reveal who they voted for). You may not vote for your own skin.

WHO CAN ENTER?
Anyone! :)

WHERE CAN I GET SOME ORB PICTURES?
You will find probably all the ORB pictures (album covers etc.) you'd want on this page

WHICH PICTURES DOES DBLEJA THINK ARE PARTICULARLY WORTHWHILE?
These ones:

http://www.theorb.com/archives/image...n_gatefold.jpg
http://www.theorb.com/archives/image..._backcover.jpg
http://www.theorb.com/archives/images/pomme_fritz1.jpg
http://www.theorb.com/archives/images/orb019.jpg
http://www.theorb.com/archives/images/oxbow_cover.jpg
http://www.theorb.com/archives/images/pomme_fritz4.jpg
And especially the images in the 3 attachments

WASN'T THERE ANOTHER THREAD FOR THIS?
Yes, this one. But now, this is the 'proper' thread.

BEFORE I BEGIN, I WANT TO FIND OUT A BIT MORE ABOUT THE ORB
Then go here

Good luck! :)

er, Schtuck??

Mr Jones 4th July 2002 18:45

Schtuck.... Stuck...Sticky...

StillWater 4th July 2002 18:49

heeeeey, cool! :)

dekt 4th July 2002 21:15

Think I'll have a go at a Little Fluffy Clouds Amp. The remix single is half my vinyl 'collection' (the other half is 'Smells Like Nirvana' by Weird "Al" Yankovich:o which was a gift I might add). Only trouble is how to get a 12" record into an A4 scanner? I'll think about it whle I'm away at the weekend and have a go next week.:)

Atmo 4th July 2002 22:45

2 months seems like a long time for a wa2 skin contest...But at least it will mean everyone will have a chance.

simon snowflake 5th July 2002 07:56

this Aint going to be simple
but I am going to try

Nini 5th July 2002 11:34

I'll enter if inspiration kisses me :)

simon snowflake 5th July 2002 12:07

Don't worry, I will probably be working the hardest out of everyone. If the prize film is anything like my other films, then editing alone is bound to take longer than any of the skins :D :D

Re: The ORB skin contest

///Edited due to me posting the same thing as Simon :D

It's really up to you. Those mentioned above are suggestions, but feel free to use whatever images you choose. I really hope that everyone ends up using a different picture - that would be cool. :)

///Edit no. 2:
Looks very good, Simon :cool::up:

Jellby 7th July 2002 19:57

I might join, but I'm not sure. It depends on whether I have time and ideas or not... Anyway, I don't know the band, so don't expect my eventual skin to be very true to it ;)

chiquita chad 7th July 2002 22:00

i have the main component almost finished :D

Atmo 7th July 2002 22:19

I havent even started yet....At least theres plenty of time.

J_Bloggs 8th July 2002 01:21

I might have the time, so I might have a go. Then again I might not have the time, thanks to heaps of homework, in the holidays I might add.

Speaking of homework I should start it. (I procrastinate)

chiquita chad 8th July 2002 06:12

You can just use the pictures that I supplied links and attachments to in the first few posts. The ORB have some great album cover art, and there are a lot to choose from here.. If that's too many to choose from, I've recommended a few in the first post which I thought were particularly attractive/skin-friendly. :)

not in santiago 8th July 2002 07:29

I'm goney try, just for the challenge of it, not because I have a hope in hell of winning. :p I think I'll tackle Auntie Aubrey because:

1) I like the artwork, and
2) um . . . it's the only Orb album I have!

I'd like to do an Oxbow skin too. Not an Orb Oxbow skin, but just an oxbow lake skin. Oxbow lakes are cool. And inselbergs. And accordians (but now I think I'm getting off topic).

Wow. I really need to sleep.

what are the rules concerning a completed skin?
can we post it here in the forums?
can we submit it to skin sites?

simon snowflake 9th July 2002 06:10

what are the rules concerning a completed skin?
- I assume:
  • main + ws
  • EQ + ws
  • PL + ws
  • MB
  • AVS
  • Mikro
  • Cursors (additional)

can we post it here in the forums?
- Sure we can, it's not like you should be afraid we rip it (would you rip mine? guess not). As far as I know its a rather friendly competition. And if you do post it in the forums, you can ask for suggestions.

can we submit it to skin sites?
- It's your skin, You have the copyrights, so its your call.

if I'm wrong somewhere please tell me

good luck keetah

StillWater 9th July 2002 07:03

Yep, pretty much what simon said. Lets write it here to make it official:

ONLY THESE COMPONENTS ARE REQUIRED
main + ws
EQ + ws
PL + ws
MB
AVS
(ie. the usual stuff)

CURSORS
Personally, I feel most skins benefit from good custom cursors. But cursors are NOT a requirement in this competition. If you don't skin the cursors, then that's fine, although it may affect whether people vote for your skin or not.

MikroAmp, MBinner, Vidamp, DFX, custom AVS and/or Milkdrop presets....etc......
Although it's always cool to have things like this - they are totally optional. However, it is recommended that you skin Mikro (and mbinner), because (a) it's a widely used plugin, and (b) it's very easy to skin. But it is not a requirement.

POSTING YOUR SKIN - OR SKIN-IN-PROGRESS - ON THE FORUMS
That's fine. It's up to you. You may want to be secretive about it and leave your skin as a big surprise, but you may want useful feedback from the forum members .

CAN I SUBMIT THE SKIN TO SITES?
Sure can. You can do so after the competition, or even before the competition is over. It's your skin, so it's up to you.

simon snowflake 9th July 2002 07:12

:D

seems I was close,
But IMHO i think The Mikro is a so generally used Plug-in, that it should be skinned aswell. Cause hey, it's not that much work.

Atmo 9th July 2002 07:18

I agree with dbleja on this one, even though i think mikro is a great plugin (its the only one i couldnt live without) having it skinned is not 100% necessary for a contest (unless its a mikro skin contest of course)...And if we had to skin mikro we may as well go the whole hog and do the mbinner etc. too.

StillWater 9th July 2002 08:00

The main reason I don't want to make Mikro compulsory is that many people can't use the MikroAmp plugin, because it crashes their computer or their winamp - so it wouldn't be fair to them. However, I've edited my previous post, and recommended that people do skin it.

simon snowflake 9th July 2002 09:42

dbleja
what colors do you prefer on a amp?

StillWater 9th July 2002 10:11

Regarding music videos:

I thought this was funny, so I thought I'd share it:

I watched an Australian program yesterday: "John Safran's Music Jamboree" (Mondays, 8:30, SBS). John Safran was talking about how so many music videos are made so badly these days - with bad, shaky camerawork, bad lighting, seemingly random camera angles, no real plot or thematic consistency, and so on (he cited The Progidy's "Smack my Bitch up" as an example). He said "You know, I reckon even a dog could get a video on RAGE! (RAGE is sort of like an Australian MTV).
So, to test his theory, he got his friend's dog (named Forrest) and strapped a camera to its back. He then let Forrest run around the streets and do what he wanted. When he came back, John Safran patched it together to a fairly ordinary techno song, and sent it to RAGE. After the necessary waiting period of a few weeks, lo and behold, the video (entitled Forrest's Frolic by Forrest appeared on RAGE! The whole video was this near-ground-level camera moving along the streets, coming up to other dogs all the time, shaking around all over the place, and peering at things through really second-rate, sometimes unintelligible camera angles. But it was aired, no problems...I found that very funny.

Anyway, don't worry, even though it obviously take much to make a commercial-grade music video, the ORB-skin-contest-winner video will NOT be like that :)
