hangover or stoking of the creative fire?

Just a quick little thread. Just wondering how you guys generally feel - skinning-wise - after you've completed a skin. Do you think, "oh man, never again" do you feel all motovated, and start a new one straight away, do you.......

Me, I'm usually in no mood to start another one, although I have many ideas in my head. I feel like making more skins, but when I actually open up the paint program, I think "are you kidding? I'm not going through all that again", and I close it again. How I got through that trilogy, which was pretty much one after another, I don't know.

Reanimation 5th July 2002 21:32

Normally feel proud then a day or 2 later i hate the skin i just made so i start again.

of corse this isnt happening now as i aint skinning at the mo, im learning PSP tut's and airbrushing :D

Omnitarian 5th July 2002 21:48

I go through several emotions.

1. (denial) "Well, that's it. Wow. Is it really done? Did I forget anything?"
2. (acceptance) "Nope. I guess It's really, truly done. ..."
3. (frustration) "I am so freaking glad I'll never have to work on it again. Ungh."
4. (hatred) "I never want to see this stupid skin again."
5. One week later- (Bliss) "Wow, I did a good job, didn't I?"
6. 3-4 weeks later (Anger again) "Stupid skin reviewers! Why did I get 3 stars for completeness! Argg!!!

i'm gonna compare skinning to cildbirth and fascism...

during it could kill you... but afterwards the pain fades...

and soon i'm back at it.

and thanks to a mixture of television, a low vitamin/high sugar diet, and exam revision, i have a very short attention span...

(sometimes i have trouble concentrating long enough for a full game of minesweeper)

so i'm usually back at something cg related with a day or two...

for me usually it's been "oh man, never again" ( some of the skinning drives me nuts, particularly the \/ /\ X buttons) but the last time it was kind of a non-event, it just happened. so today i toyed with some ideas for an orbular skin. it must be too soon though cos it's just not happening. :(

i dislike ceaser he wasn't all that great. he was a crappy military leader. he just had power. hes famous cause he started a whole civil war and made himself glorious. looks like wut my dog throws up. do someone good next time. great in skin wise though."

Woohoo! That's a wrap! Lets do another! (/me fires gun in mouth):p

PeaceMaker 6th July 2002 01:12

just think of that next skin your about to do, then put more effort into finishing the one ur doing now.

dawid. r u in that 1001 skin contest?

Mr_Tough_Guy 6th July 2002 01:22

I totally agree with what you said dbleja, after finishing Rose Tattoo, everytime I start skinning I quit after about 5 minutes. I've got a million ideas, but actually making a skin is just too much work at the moment.

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 02:44

i never start a skin right after finishing one. i'm exhausted. i just want to kick back and stare at pretty things... things i didn't spend hours making...

Jellby 6th July 2002 08:07

I don't feel anything special. I'm glad I've finished, I behold my work with a smile and, if I have time and ideas, I start a new one. The beginning of a skin and the finishing touches are so different that I don't think "man, it's doing the same all the time..."

dimichan 6th July 2002 10:09

I get a quick thrill, then within a few hours it's kind of a letdown, like... that's it? And takes a while before I'm ready to start again :p And at least half of them I'm thoroughly sick of by the time I actually finish... Of course *looks at about 20 partials* a lot of times I get partway done and have no inclination to finish at all!

no mb or avs window skinned, forgot all about the appbuttons...

I normally feel "well, that looks utter crap...next" and do something else (like my lightsaber and i know it's a red x at the moment, my host is down)

Atmo 6th July 2002 12:16

Every time i finish a skin i take a break for a few weeks at least. In that time i spend time just drawing random 'stuff', occasionally a new sig or avatar etc. But if i get an idea that i could use for a skin i generally use it and create something new. Whether i finish it depends on my mood at the time...

Btw, yor sig is showing for me BH.

Yeah, I've basically finished my skin. I'm just polishing up an AVS preset for it, and I might add a Milkdrop preset. I'm just waiting to see if there's actually going to be a contest  There's a day left for more people to say that they're in - otherwise Max is calling it off.

We're talking about the make a 1001winampskins.com skin competition. 1 day left to 'apply' - details here (scroll down)

BlueBalls 6th July 2002 23:37

i like my skins and i enjoy skinning, i just hate doing the volume, balance, eq bars and pl stacks, but after that its fine, thats why BL13AMP isnt done yet, i hafta do the volume balance eq bars and pl stacks still hehe :)

ut i gave up on thinking about ideas, now i am just trying to find a style to call my own and i just start drawing random things in photoshop until something looks nice to me, then i go with it and make it up as i go along, i think the only skin i really had set in my mind so far was deadfall and XG-13, the others i just kinda went with it.

I'm the opposite. I enjoy the 'animated' parts, except maybe the EQ bars. They're tedious sometimes, but they give me the most satisfaction. Same with the shuf/rep/on/auto/eq/pl buttons. And the PL stacks are cruisy for me. But, like ripe, I hate the \/ /\ X buttons.

PeaceMaker 7th July 2002 01:56

the animations is generally the best part for me. it allows you to create something unique, depending on the talent you own and what thoughts u consider at the time. when i define a good skin from a crap skin, the animations plays a key part, aswell as overall dimensions/ layout.

Atmo 7th July 2002 02:12

Doing the animations can either be a pain in the ass or really satisfying....Just depends on the skin and how it looks when its done.

heh, occasionally. good one atmo.

BlueBalls 7th July 2002 05:54

yes but if it isnt animated, sometimes on good skins they just didnt animate them much, its just seems like a chore, i dislike doing those things a lot

J_Bloggs 7th July 2002 11:07

The skin i'm working on at the moment started out as a random image in my head, then I f**ked it up (it didn't look how I wanted it to, but it still looked good) and descided 'hey, I'm bored, lets make a skin!'.

Making little images is fun, but skinnig brings satisfaction cos it involes hard work. (unless you f**k something up).

My cure-all for skinner's creative fatigue:

1) have a million and one ideas for skins. They must be WONDERFUL, AMAZING, STUPENDOUS ideas, and they will look really supergreat once they're done. Most of these ideas won't bear close examination, but you must ignore this fact. This is just rocket fuel-like motivation.

2) have at least 50 skins on the go

3) have at least 50 non-skinning related projects & hobbies on the go

There. Now life is a flurry of activity and you won't know the difference between finishing one thing and starting another.

(Of course, this may only work for certain individuals who are not in complete control of their respective brains.)

*coughs*

 :p :D

simon snowflake 8th July 2002 12:29

Well usually I start a new one right after it witch gets never finished, then I start another and another, but they all wont make it, and then 9 months later I complete one again :D

J. Burnaway 8th July 2002 14:57

I've only made 2, so I don't have a real long track record, but I started my second right after finishing my first. The first was mostly a learning experience, so I easily went from one to the next. I'm stuck now. I have started one or two, but they don't look like I want them to - aieee!

Xerxes - love the review.
