help with a file that can't be deleted!

so i downloaded a video of kazaa and now i can't delete it! when i right click on it, i dont get any of the normal options like delete, copy or rename. anyone know how i can get rid of this file?
thanks!

Close out of Kazaa and and other programs that you might be using to play the file. Try deleting the file again.

I certainly hope that file didn't end with an .exe extension. In the unlikely event it did, don't open it. You may have a worm.

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 01:28

no its an mpg. i'm already out of those programs. i'm so confused. most files, when you right click you get a bunch of options, like copy, delete, rename, add to zip and stuff. but when i right click on this, all i get is open and add to playlist. ughhh
please help!!!

/edit
i can't even delete the folder its in!
tis the file from hell!!

Huehuetenango 6th July 2002 01:32

uhm, this may be entirely obvious and you've likely alreayd done it, but have you tried just single clicking hte file, so it's high-lighted, and then pressing the delete button?

if so, waht error message do you get?

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 01:34

when i do that, nothing happens. no error, no deleting :( however, i do get an error when i try to delete the folder its in.

Reboot into DOS mode
cd\directoryfilefromhellisin
del filefromhell.mpg

progra~1

Try this first. Go to "Run" in your Start Menu and type winfile and hit enter. See if you can delete it using the old file manager. (I'm assuming you're running Windows 9x)

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 02:19

no, i'm on xp. and i cant delete it in dos :(

Aeroe 6th July 2002 02:21

use a win9x boot disc, or make one.
there's also a way to make a special unofficial winxp boot disc... dunno what virtues it has.
oops, misread that, thought you didn't try dos outside of winxp.

my ideas:
try tweakxp.com's forums, i hate to "advertise" another place but it's the job of the place.
i found something similar about someone who can't delete movie files from kazaa:
here

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 02:22

how do i make a 9.x boot disc?

randman 6th July 2002 02:23

Have you rebooted and then tried to delete it?

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 02:23

yeah. this is freakin me out!

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 02:26

yessssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i deleted the folder in dos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for your help everyone!!!!

randman 6th July 2002 02:30

Great! I'm glad you solved that problem. I know how frustrating that can be. For future reference you can download generic boot disks from BootDisk.com.

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 02:31

cool. thanks man.

btw- it was pr0n on my parents computer! thats why i was all freakin out!

_Blackdog_ 6th July 2002 03:39

yeah, it was a huge name. just for future reference, how do you boot in safe mode in XP?

randman 6th July 2002 03:44

I dunno about XP, but with Windoze 9x you just click on the F8 function key a couple of times when it first starts to boot up. That takes you to a menu that lets you select to boot in "Safe Mode".

heres another idea...click and drag it in the recycle bin if that happens, probely faster that rebooting into dos :D

you mean you dont have to go into dos to delete things?!

slacker52 8th July 2002 06:16

well that shit happened to me and that worked nicely:rolleyes:

Neko 8th July 2002 07:30

If anyone needs one, i have a bootup disk ON CD, that will boot when "boot from cd" is selected, but you could have just ctrl+alt+del, killed explorer.exe and other useless crap, run cmd and deleted it that way

Atmo 8th July 2002 07:46

Nero has the option to make a boot cd.
