This is puzzling me:

Is it wrong for Michael Jackson to get angry at a studio head using the word "Nigger?"

On one side, Black people call each other Nigger all the time (except will smith) and never think twice- and Michael is black.

On the other side, IS michael still considered to be black?- because if he's a white person then it's completely different. Nigger is an ugly word to be tossed around.

What i'm really trying to say here is make a point about hypocrisy of the Black community- their leaders always make the point that they are tired of racial stereotyping, but at the same time the source of a lot of the stereotyping isn't coming from the non-black community.

I pose a question Mr. Xerxes. If I were to call you whitey or honky would you be offended? I doubt it, because we're the same race and we sort of know each other. Now if a black man you didn't know called you either of those, would you be offended?

Blacks choose to use the word "nigger" as slang within their community. I see that as their right, not as propagating a certain sterotype.

I would be taken aback- but Nigger has connotations that go back to slave trading and KKK hate speeches... to me it's extremely negative.

I find it offensive as well. All I'm saying is if blacks wanna call each other that, more power to them. I don't claim to know the first thing about how they think. If they see the use of that word as harmless slang between themselves, that's their right. I think our discomfort with the word stems from which side we were on. Whites were the slave traders. Whites were, and still are, the KKK. Maybe our perspective is different because of deep-rooted feelings of guilt?

Guilt? Guilt is a liberal emotion. ;)

Michael Jackson isn't white- I mean techinically he is but his origins aren't. It's the same as if a white person grew up in the ghetto surrounded by black people; he has a right to call black people nigger only if it is understood that he means "friend" and not anything else. It can be used in certain circumstances but only when it is accepted by the particular party to not be offensive.

I wouldn't really go as far as to call it hypocrisy because when someone uses a particular term who is not initiated within a particular group the intended meaning is unknown. Which in turn- makes their motives suspect. Within the group it is clear that the word "nigger" is not deragatory but rather the same thing as friend or buddy...

Note that these two sentences are not the same:

1) "Hey what's up my nigga?"

2) "Hey, how are you- you nigger?"

The first is inclusionary while the second seems to be an incursion. When the speeker does not belong to a group either physically or by initiatation I suppose he doesn't have the right to use the "words of passage". In short, it's all about context.

I think, if blacks have turned the word around from it's previous (and still slightly current) negative meaning and are now saying it with a meaning of brotherhood, then that's great. They've completely demolished what the word was meant for back in the days when it was said to make them feel of lesser value and now it's being said to show relationship.

I, personally, would be hesitant to say the word to a black person, however, for fear that they would think I was meaning it in a derrogatory way. Think about it though, when whites have said it to them it was usually in the derrogatory meaning, but when they have said it to each other it was usually in the friendship meaning.

Then there's such things as "white trash." I call myself that all the time, and I don't really mind if others (of any color) say it to me if they don't say it to be mean. I guess I kinda look at it from that view.

I have heard black people use the word nigger ib both a positive context and a negative context. The quote in the article seems to be on the negative side.

I found Jackson's comment a bit weird and two-faced. After all, the guy did everything that was in his power to literally become white. Yet, he still pretends to be interested in defending the black cause. Seems odd to me.
But more generally, I just think that this whole story is just another manifestation of the guy's superego. His latest album, which cost several million dollars to record, is a complete flop and now, he's been trying to put the blame on other people. Since Jackson failed commercially, he's now trying to get publicity and success by doing this. Poor attempt.

I really don't like the way you managed to group all white people into the slave-trading, racist category. Most white people have never participated a KKK rally or sold slaves.

For future reference, there were black slave traders as well.

Personally, I don't care who calls who what. I don't use the word, but if a white man wants to use it, then let him. That's his business. The same for a black man.

I could care less if someone calls me a "cracker", or "white trash", or pretty much anything else. The last time I really felt hurt by an insult was in high school, and that was only because it came from someone I counted as a friend. If you aren't my friend, there isn't a whole lot you can say to hurt my feelings. You might make me angry, but that stems more from my anger towards society for creating obnoxious people.

As for Michael Jackson, I have nothing to say, really. The man is severely disturbed, and nothing he says has any relevance to me.

If blacks use the term nigger in a friendly context then I see no reason why they should get pissed if a white person uses it, somehow assuming that because they're are white they meant it in a derogitory way.

I wouldn't use the word because I don't like it but don't slate someone for using a friendly word just because they are a different colour. That's racism just the opposite way to the 'norm'.

I was speaking in general terms. My bad. The mass majority of slave traders were white, and I'm pretty sure there aren't too many black Klan members. ;) I also realize that the majority of whites aren't either. But you don't have to be a Klan member to be racist. And I know you don't have to be white to be a racist.
