Can't write MP3 or WAV files

I've got Winamp 2.80.
I've selected Nullsoft Diskwriter plugin.
I've configured an existing directory for the output.
I do NOT have shuffle or repeat enabled.

But when I play an audio CD track, it plays normally through the speakers. I remember getting this to work several months ago, but it's not working now. I've tried selecting the MP3 writer, but it's no better.

While this works, an external CD ripper such as CDex or ExactAudioCopy is recommended, along with the LAME encoder.

CDex is my ripper of choice. I was ripping a CD book from the library that was in less-than-optimal condition and a couple of the tracks couldn't be read by CDex. It got several jitter errors. Winamp ripped them without any trouble (although it took about 20 times as long...).
